BACKGROUND/AIMS: Decoronation is currently considered the best treatment option for ankylosed teeth and discrepancies in the alveolar bone, particularly in childhood and adolescence. The loss of a front tooth creates aesthetic, functional, and psychological distress in patients and their parents. The aim of this study was to analyze the types of restorations provided after decoronation, their suitability, durability, and follow up until insertion of the final restoration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review was conducted using Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science to identify eligib

Ankylotic root resorption is a serious complication following traumatic dental injuries. The aetiology of root resorption includes acute injury to the cementum and periodontal ligament, and subsequent biological processes that propagate the harm. The aim of the present paper is to present a structured treatment protocol for teeth that have experienced trauma and are at risk of developing ankylotic root resorption, followed by a decoronation protocol for situations in which ankylotic root resorption developed. This protocol provides a structured road map from the primary dental trauma, through

INTRODUCTION: Intentional partial odontectomy or coronectomy is primarily advocated in situations with intimate relationships between the roots of the tooth indicated for extraction and the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). The aim of this report was to present a patient with two neighbouring infraoccluded teeth in the right mandible indicated for extraction prior to prosthetic rehabilitation, which were coronectomied as to prevent injuring of the IAN and causing iatrogenic fracture of the mandibular body.
CASE REPORT: Coronectomy of both teeth was performed as recommended in the literature. The

BACKGROUND/AIMS: An easily available tooth storage medium is required to preserve a tooth after avulsion. Milk and Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS) are recommended as tooth storage media, and egg white is also reported to be comparable with milk. The aim of this study was to histologically and immunohistochemically evaluate the effect of different tooth storage media on the periodontal ligament (PDL) of extracted teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This experiment used HBSS, milk, and egg white as tooth storage media. A total of ninety-six 6-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in these

The tooth is stabilized by fiber-rich tissue called the periodontal ligament (PDL). The narrow space of the PDL does not calcify in the physiological state even thought it exists between two calcified tissues, namely, the cementum of the root and alveolar bone. Two situations that require PDL regeneration are periodontitis and dental trauma. Periodontitis induces the loss of PDL and alveolar bone due to inflammation related to infection. Conversely, in PDLs damaged by dental trauma, accelerating bone formation as an overreaction of the healing process is induced, thereby inducing dentoalveolar

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of 3-dimensional, printed, patient-specific guides to direct virtual gap arthroplasties that were designed for five patients with advanced unilateral ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint. The guides were used to mimic the intraoperative creation of five preplanned osteotomies, as well as simulating the width and depth of the bone cleavage. The accuracy of the devices in guiding the surgical simulation was assessed by superimposing the preoperative and postoperative computed tomographic scans. The devices were easily put in place with smo

This case report deals with the histologic examination of an avulsed tooth that was reimplanted in a socket where a distal root defect was augmented with hydroxyapatite. The 6-year results showed a "repair" type of connective tissue attachment. There were areas of ankylosis present on the distal root above an area of prior cystic debridement. The hydroxyapatite particles present demonstrated biocompatibility and encapsulation by new bone growth. There was a longer junctional epithelium present on the distal root than on its mesial counterpart. Histology of the distal root demonstrated fibrous

UNLABELLED: Transmigration is a tooth pathology in which the migrating tooth bud passes the median plane.
METHODS: This study is a presentation of the diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes in the cases of 4 stomach teeth transmigrations diagnosed in 3 patients with mandibular retrognathia which was a complication after osteitis in the postnatal period and infancy.
RESULTS: Extending imaging diagnostics to include CT, most preferably CBCT, makes it possible to precisely evaluate a transmigrated canine's position and to plan a course of treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Planning of the treatment of teeth

The treatment of the impacted teeth is often challenging. During orthodontic treatment of the impacted teeth, unexpected tooth movement may occur for a variety of reasons including inadequate anchorage, inappropriate force vectors, ankylosis of the impacted tooth, traumatic external root resorption in adjacent teeth, and/or bony fenestration. Although cone-beam CT (CBCT) can clearly identify the location of impacted teeth, clinicians should avoid other difficulties before and during the traction of impacted teeth. This article discussed the risk factors during treatment of impacted teeth and p

UNLABELLED: Anterior maxillary implantation is a challenging treatment for both the surgeon and prosthodontist due to high esthetic demands in this area. However, it is the most traumatized and most exposed region to habits. Prompt and appropriate management can significantly improve prognosis of many dentoalveolar injuries, especially in young patients. Unfortunately, many traumatized teeth are overtreated or left untreated, which lead to a much more complicated treatment at the time of permanent restoration at adulthood. The facial cortical plate over the roots of the maxillary teeth is thin

Infraocclusion is a term used to describe a tooth which has stopped its relative occlusal growth into the arch after the period of active eruption; as a result, the tooth becomes depressed below the occlusal plane. Although many aetiological mechanisms have been proposed, ankylosis is considered the primary cause of infraocclusion. Complex cases benefit from multidisciplinary management. This paper concentrates on the diagnosis and management of infraoccluded second primary molars, without permanent successors and without significant malocclusion, and provides clinicians with a treatment decis

The periodontal therapy of severely damaged teeth that have advanced bone loss, a significant degree of mobility, and often tooth migration and elongation, frequently exposes the dental clinician to difficult decisions regarding the appropriate therapy for the patient. Extensive rehabilitation, with the replacement of periodontally hopeless teeth, has biologic, prognostic, and financial limitations. A possible alternative in such cases is the transreplantation of periodontally hopeless teeth. Ankylosis of the tooth is induced by appropriate extraoral pretreatment and thus the mobility disappea

The prognosis for a reimplanted tooth depends largely on the condition of the root. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB has been shown to regenerate periodontal tissue in animal and human clinical studies. However, information regarding the effect of PDGF-BB on tooth reimplantation is limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of PDGF-BB on root resorption after reimplantation of a partially denuded tooth in dog. A total of 15 healthy female beagle dogs were used. Mandibular third and fourth premolars were endodontically treated and then extracted as atraumatically

BACKGROUND: Forced eruption of an impacted tooth usually requires surgical and orthodontic interventions to successfully bring the tooth into the dental arch. The clinical time required for a forced eruption is difficult to predict before treatment begins and success rates are affected by several factors before and after an eruption. This study was conducted to identify factors that affect the success of forced eruption, the duration of orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth, and the reasons for re-operation and forced eruption failure in a various teeth and cases.
METHODS: In this retrospec

An interesting case of intentional reimplantation, in which the distal root of a mandibular molar was reimplanted after hemisection, is reported for the first time. This root served as the distal abutment for a three-unit bridge. A 3-year follow-up revealed a successful outcome, with a clinically asymptomatic and functional tooth with no radiographic signs of resorption or ankylosis.

The time elapsed between a trauma and tooth replantation usually ranges from 1 to 4 h. The chances of root surface damage are higher when tooth replantation is not performed immediately or if the avulsed tooth is not stored in an adequate medium. This invariably leads to necrosis of pulp tissue, periodontal ligament cells and cementum, thus increasing the possibility of root resorption, which is the main cause of loss of replanted teeth. This paper presents a comprehensive review of literature on root surface treatments performed in cases of delayed tooth replantation with necrotic cemental pe

The tissue-based phenomena and the tissue interactions responsible for tooth displacement can be modulated by varying the intensity of the applied forces or by means of medicated molecules absorbed by the patient or prescribed by the orthodontist. However, harmful side-effects such as inflammatory root resorption or replacement resorption (ankylosis) can occur requiring appropriate management on the part of the practitioner.
