Multifunctional magnesium organic framework-based photothermal and pH dual-responsive mouthguard for caries prevention and tooth self-healing promotion.

Caries is considered to be the most prevalent non-communicable disease in humans, mainly deriving from acidogenic bacterial biofilm and resulting in the demineralization and decomposition of hard dental tissue. Herein, a composite responsive foam brace loaded with magnesium organic framework (MPC) is designed for caries prevention and tooth remineralization. MPC can intelligently release organic antibacterial molecules (gallic acid) and mineralized ions (Mg2+, Ca2+ and PO43-) under acidic conditions (pH < 5.5) of biofilm infection, regulating pH and killing bacteria. Additionally, due to the e

Studies of dental root surface caries. 2: The role of cementum in root surface caries.

Artificial caries lesions were produced in roots of teeth using an acetate buffer system, when the layer of cementum was either normal in thickness, excessively thickened by hypercementosis, or had been removed completely. The rates of lesion progression were measured in each case using polarized light microscopy to measure lesion depth. Analysis of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) loss during the demineralizing process was carried out. The removal of cementum was found to significantly increase the initial rate of penetration of the lesion into the root, although this rate progressively reduce

[Risk management and clinical strategies for early enamel demineralization in orthodontic patients].

Early enamel demineralization, one of the common side effects of orthodontic treatment, occurs when dental plaque accumulation disrupts the balances of demineralization-remineralization and the oral microbial ecology. Clinically, the existence of orthodontic appliances can make oral hygiene more challenging. At the same time, patient adherence to oral hygiene appointments may be inconsistent. The combination of these factors often leads to inadequate plaque control and increases the risk of enamel demineralization. Presently, there is a lack of standardized guidelines for the clinical interven

Tetracycline Enables Visualization of Remineralization Induced by Agents Penetrating Dental Enamel.

The demineralization of tooth enamel caused by acid attack in dental biofilms is a significant challenge in dentistry. While fluoride varnishes are widely used to protect and restore the enamel surface, their actual ability to penetrate and treat the enamel in depth remains poorly understood. This study proposes an innovative in vitro approach to visualize the diffusion of remineralizing agents into enamel depth using by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Four commercial fluoride varnishes (MI Varnish®, Duraphat®, FluoroCal®, Clinpro Clear Fluoride®) were applied to artificially demine

In situ models, physico-chemical aspects.

In situ (intra-oral) caries models are used for two purposes. First, they provide information about oral physiological processes. Such information helps to detail our knowledge of the oral ecosystem and to verify conclusions from in vitro experiments. Second, in situ models are utilized to test preventive agents in the phase between laboratory testing and clinical trials. Most investigations involving enamel inserts have been aimed at testing new dentifrices. The experimental designs of such studies usually do not allow one to draw conclusions on physico-chemical processes, e.g., because of si

[Risks of orthodontic treatment].

Risks of orthodontic treatment identified in the literature are: enamel damage, root resorption, periodontal damage, temporomandibular disorders, tooth devitalization, treatment failure, and relapse. Enamel damage in the form of irreversible demineralization can take place during treatment with fixed appliances in the absence of adequate oral hygiene. Root resorption occurs, but seldom to the point of clinical relevance. Individual susceptibility and genetics are determining factors. Periodontal damage occurs as gingival recessions. Temporomandibular disorders and tooth devitalization hardly o

[Aplication of demineralized human bone matrix in the surgical dental fusion treatment. Report of a case].

The purpose of this work is to present a surgical alternative in the treatment of the dental fusions through the placement of demineralized human bone matrix (DHBM) (Grafton Putty)*, immediately after the separation and extraction of the fused tooth to the permanent one. The dental fusion is a dental anomaly of union, that consists in the union of two dental germs during development. It could happen at any of the dental germ evolution stages from the dental sheet or from more advanced processes of differentiation. For the clinical treatment, an allograft of DHBM with osteoinductive and osteoco

Syndromes with salivary dysfunction predispose to tooth wear: Case reports of congenital dysfunction of major salivary glands, Prader-Willi, congenital rubella, and Sjögren's syndromes.

Four cases-of congenital dysfunction of the major salivary glands as well as of Prader-Willi, congenital rubella, and Sjögren's syndromes-were identified in a series of 500 patients referred for excessive tooth wear. Although there was evidence of consumption of highly acidic drinks, some occlusal parafunction, and unacceptable toothbrushing habits, salivary dysfunction was the salient factor predisposing a patient to tooth wear in these syndromal cases. The 500 subjects have been characterized either as having medical conditions and medications that predispose them to xerostomia or lifestyles

Effect of calcium-coacervate infiltration of artificial enamel caries lesions in de- and remineralizing conditions.

OBJECTIVES: Calcium-coacervate emulsions (CC) might be considered as mineral precursors to foster remineralization of carious dental hard tissues. This study analyzed the instant effect of repeated infiltration of artificial caries lesions with a CC emulsion as well as the effects of subsequent exposure of CC-infiltrated lesions to demineralizing and remineralizing environments. METHODS: Bovine enamel specimens were partly covered with varnish to leave three exposed windows. Artificial enamel caries lesions were created (pH 4.95, 17d). Baseline controls (BL) were obtained by preparing a thin

[Clinical consequences of dioxins exposure during tooth development].

Commonly designed by the term "dioxins", polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons are environmental pollutants leading to several toxic effects during development and growth in embryo and child. The general consequences of dioxin exposure are particularly well-documented whereas only few data are mentioned by the experts concerning tooth development. However, studies performed in rodents have shown many disruptions during odontogenesis and enamel mineralisation. Moreover, recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated in human the incidence of dioxin exposure on enamel hypomineralisation and hy

Influence of two dentin bonding systems on the demineralization of the root surface.

It has been assumed that dentin adhesives can prevent root surface caries. The aim of this study was to determine the caries-protective effect of two different dentin bonding systems on the demineralization of root surfaces in vitro. The root surfaces of 60 freshly extracted caries-free human molars were thoroughly cleaned and polished, thereby removing the cementum. The teeth were then coated with acid-resistant nail varnish, exposing two rectangular windows of 6 mm2 each. One window served as an untreated control, while the other window was treated with a dentin bonding system. The specimens
