Risk factors of tooth wear in permanent dentition: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear (TW) prevalence is high and increasing and has important consequences on the patient's quality of life. Knowledge of risk factors is crucial to promote diagnosis, prevention strategies and timely interceptive treatment. Many studies have identified TW risk factors. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to map and describe suspected available factors associated with TW in permanent dentition based on quantitative measurement. METHODS: The scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA extension of the Scoping Reviews checklist. The search was conducted in October 2022 from

In vitro demineralization/remineralization cycles at human tooth enamel surfaces investigated by AFM and nanoindentation.

The early stages of enamel surface dissolution (erosion) are of high scientific relevance; however, little is known about if and to what extent these early stages, which result in the softening of the enamel surface, are reversible. The present study investigated the possible rehardening of surface softened enamel in two separate experiments in vitro, employing physiologically relevant demineralization and remineralization times and remineralizing solutions possessing chemical properties close to those of human saliva. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) based nanoindentation has been used to study

Hemoglobin Protects Enamel against Intrinsic Enamel Erosive Demineralization.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the changes in the acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) proteome when this integument is formed in vivo after treatment with sugarcane-derived cystatin (CaneCPI-5), hemoglobin (HB), and a statherin-derived peptide (StN15), or their combination and then exposed to an intrinsic acid challenge. The effectiveness of these treatments in preventing intrinsic erosion was also evaluated. METHODS: Ten volunteers, after prophylaxis, in 5 crossover phases, rinsed with the following solutions (10 mL, 1 min): control (deionized water-H2O) - group 1, 0.1 mg/mL CaneCPI-5 - gr

Links between oral and gastrointestinal health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the links between oral and gastrointestinal health and discuss their implications in clinical management. RECENT FINDINGS: There are many instances in which changes that occur within the oral cavity reflect systemic disease elsewhere in the body. Oral manifestations may be the first sign of gastrointestinal disease. This is definitely the case in the inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. However, although the oral manifestations are relatively well recognized, the links between pathobiology at different sites do not appear to

Tooth-surface loss related to pregnancy-induced vomiting.

We present a clinical case of tooth-surface loss affecting the palatal surfaces of the upper incisors, caused by prolonged pregnancy-induced vomiting. The patient was successfully treated, first orthodontically and then with indirect composite palatal veneers. As dental practitioners, we should be aware of this problem when screening pregnant patients, as early diagnosis and prevention are important.

Dental erosion caused by silent gastroesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a relatively common condition, in which stomach acid may be refluxed up through the esophagus and into the oral cavity, resulting in enamel erosion. Symptoms such as belching, unexplained sour taste and heartburn usually alert the patient to the condition. In silent GERD, however, these symptoms do not occur, and enamel erosion of the posterior dentition may be the first indication of GERD. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 30-year-old man came to a dental clinic with enamel erosion on the occlusal surfaces of his posterior teeth and the palatal surf

Can tooth brushing damage your health? Effects on oral and dental tissues.

Circumstantial evidence based on anecdote, case reports, epidemiological data and studies in vitro and in situ implicate tooth brushing with toothpaste with tooth wear, gingival recession and dentine hypersensitivity. This review attempts to assess the clinical significance of the potential harm produced by this most common oral hygiene habit. The toothbrush alone appears to have no effect on enamel and very little on dentine. Most toothpaste also has very little effect on enamel and in normal use would not cause significant wear of dentine in a lifetime of use. Wear of enamel and dentine can

Studies on dental erosion: an in vitro model of root surface erosion.

Most research on dental erosion has focused on erosion in enamel. However, the increasing retention of teeth into old age has increased the potential for root surface erosion. The nature and kinetics of root surface erosion have not yet been adequately explored. The objective of this project was to develop an in vitro model of root surface erosion in order to investigate the polarised light microscopy of controlled erosion and the histology and rate of demineralisation of this process in root cementum/dentine. The results demonstrate a process quite different in outcome from that in enamel ero

The prevalence of dental erosion in Nigerian patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND: In various people of the Western world, gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) has been reported to be a common problem. Various studies have also assessed the relationship between GOR and dental erosion. The authors are not aware of such studies in Nigerians. It is therefore the aims of the present study to estimate the prevalence of GOR; to estimate the prevalence of dental erosion in patients with GORD; to document the oral findings in patients diagnosed with GORD and to compare these findings with previous studies elsewhere. METHODS: A total of 225 subjects comprising of 100 volunteer

Syndromes with salivary dysfunction predispose to tooth wear: Case reports of congenital dysfunction of major salivary glands, Prader-Willi, congenital rubella, and Sjögren's syndromes.

Four cases-of congenital dysfunction of the major salivary glands as well as of Prader-Willi, congenital rubella, and Sjögren's syndromes-were identified in a series of 500 patients referred for excessive tooth wear. Although there was evidence of consumption of highly acidic drinks, some occlusal parafunction, and unacceptable toothbrushing habits, salivary dysfunction was the salient factor predisposing a patient to tooth wear in these syndromal cases. The 500 subjects have been characterized either as having medical conditions and medications that predispose them to xerostomia or lifestyles

Erosion of the non-occlusal surfaces of sheeps' deciduous teeth.

Major erosion of the labial or lingual surfaces was seen in histological sections of deciduous teeth from three of 208 sheep from two farms. In one, the erosion extended through both the enamel and the dentine and thus exposed the pulp cavity which had developed pulpitis. In the other cases the erosion affected the cementum and dentine of the tooth root, and did not penetrate as far as the pulp cavity. Dentine proliferation occurred on the adjacent pulpal surface, however, although pulpitis was not evident.

BARIATRIC SURGERY IMPACT ON GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX AND DENTAL WEAR: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW.

INTRODUCTION: Several oral problems may be perceived in individuals who were submitted to bariatric surgery, due to metabolic and behavioral changes relative to diet and oral hygiene. Tooth wear appears to suffer impact after bariatric surgery, because there may be an increase in gastroesophageal reflux. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature regarding the impact of bariatric surgery on gastroesophageal reflux and tooth wear. METHOD: The following databases were accessed by two independent, calibrated examiners: PubMed, Medline, Lilacs, Scielo and Cochrane using the following des

Genetic Aspects of Dental Erosive Wear and Dental Caries.

OBJECTIVES: The present review aims to give an overview of the literature focusing on novel genetic aspects of dental erosion and dental caries. Once the tooth erupts into the oral cavity, the regenerative capability of enamel is fundamentally limited due to the loss of dental epithelium during eruption. The susceptibility or resistance to dental erosion and caries is presumably a result of environmental, phenotypic, and/or genetic influence. Even though it is evident that individuals frequently exposing their teeth to acid and sugar are at high risk of developing dental erosion and caries, th
