BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive dentistry has driven the development of alternative cavity preparation techniques aimed at preserving tooth structure and improving biological outcomes. Ultrasonic systems associated with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond tips have emerged as a potential alternative to conventional rotary instruments; however, evidence regarding their effects on dentin surface morphology and smear layer characteristics under SEM remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the morphological characteristics of dentin surfaces after cavity preparation using ultrasonic and co

This case report reports how tooth transplantation and a graft-free sinus lift were combined due to insufficient bone volume at the recipient site. An unerupted wisdom tooth was autotransplanted to replace a missing upper premolar. First, the donor tooth was exposed and gently mobilized. At the recipient site, there was a thin layer of bone under the maxillary sinus. The lateral window technique was used in the sinus lift. After elevating the mucous membrane of the sinus floor, the bone was prepared to match the measures of the donor tooth. The mucous membrane was slightly perforated. The dono

INTRODUCTION: Extraction of one mandibular incisor in adolescents and adults can simplify orthodontic treatment in 2 major circumstances: (1) severe crowding of the mandibular but not the maxillary incisors, and (2) mild anterior crossbite with good alignment in both arches. Despite its potential advantages, this method has had limited use in most practices. There have been 3 major objections: (1) the possibility of unsightly black triangles because of loss of interdental papilla height, (2) a possible tooth size discrepancy that would affect occlusal relationships, and (3) patient concerns ab

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The use of ultrasonic tips has become an alternative for cavity preparation. However, there are concerns about this type of device, particularly with respect to intrapulpal temperatures and cavity preparation time.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze pulpal temperature increases generated by an ultrasonic cavity preparation with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) tips, in comparison to preparation with a high-speed handpiece with a diamond rotary cutting instrument. The time required to complete the cavity preparation with each system was also evaluated.

The fabrication of a Suersen obturator prosthesis with titanium framework is described in the case of a 43-year-old man with congenital absence of the soft palate. The patient revealed an open soft palate, bilateral cleft lip and palate, Angle Class III dental malocclusion, and anterior and posterior crossbite. He was treated with a multidisciplinary approach. A Dolder bar was fabricated between the maxillary canines, and telescopic crowns were prepared for maxillary premolars. Angle Class III tooth relation was readjusted to tooth-tooth relation; closure of the nasopharynx and oropharynx was

BACKGROUND: Tooth replantation after traumatic avulsion or transplantation is a challenge in oral surgery. A special method named auto-alloplastic replantation, in which a titanium post is used after extraoral endodontic treatment, combines several advantages. The treatment is performed in one step with no further endodontic intervention, no wide root canal instrumentation, no recontamination, and reduced endodontic infection. This is the first report on replantation of an ectopic tooth in a patient with a cleft lip and alveolus using this method.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The biologically oriented preparation technique is a concept with a vertical tooth preparation, gingitage, an immediate interim restoration preserving the clot, and a specific laboratory technique aiming to adapt the marginal periodontal tissue to a remodeled emergence profile of the crown. However, the published scientific evidence on this subject is limited.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze whether using the biologically oriented preparation technique leads to improved clinical outcomes in terms of probing depth, gingival inflammation index

Provisional restorations are fabricated to protect the prepared tooth structure during the period between tooth preparation and insertion of the definitive restoration. These restorations are also referred to in the literature as interim, temporary, or provisional restorations (prostheses). Such restorations should be uncomplicated and inexpensive to fabricate in a short period of time. Several laboratory and clinical techniques for the fabrication of provisional restorations have been described in the literature, such as the indirect technique, direct technique, and indirect-direct techniques

OBJECTIVE: Vertical root fracture (VRF) in endodontically treated molars (ETMs) is a multifactorial condition. However, the relationship between residual pericervical and apical dentine in ETMs and VRF has yet to be fully assessed. This study aimed to investigate the association between residual pericervical and apical dentine and VRF in ETMs.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: ETMs with VRFs (44 cases) and those without VRFs (92 controls) were included. Residual dentine at pericervical level and apical terminus of root canal filling (RCF) were assessed based on the ratio between the mesiodistal widths of

Orthodontic extrusion of nonrestorable teeth has been used for almost 20 years as an alternative to bone grafting in preparation for implant placement. Although this technique predictably creates bone and soft tissue, and improves the socket diameter and depth, most of the bone apposition occurs in the marginal alveolar and periapical areas of the extruded tooth. To create more labial bone, the standard orthodontic extrusion technique was modified to apply pressure on the hopeless tooth both coronally and palatally, which allowed bone at the site to develop apically and labially. Odontogenic aplasia, or the congenital absence of permanent teeth, is relatively common. When the missing teeth include the maxillary lateral incisors, treatment considerations must reconcile both esthetic and functional objectives. In developing dentition, erupting adjacent teeth can drift from their intended positions into the edentulous space created by the congenitally missing tooth. When this movement happens (e.g., cuspids shifting more mesially than normal), esthetic and functional problems occur. A restorative solution for missing maxillary lateral incisors subsequent to the loss of th

This case report describes the replacement of a missing maxillary right central incisor (tooth number 8) with a supernumerary tooth using cone beam computed tomography based digital planning, a three-dimensional printed donor replica tooth, osseodensification, and connective tissue grafting. A 36-year-old male presented with general periodontitis and a healed socket in the number 8 region 3 months postavulsion. Based on cone beam computed tomography scans, auto-transplantation of a single-rooted mandibular supernumerary tooth into a surgically created socket in the number 8 region was planned.

Autotransplantation is a valuable technique offering a physiological type of tooth replacement to patients with missing teeth. Teeth with open apices (50-75% apical closure) will regenerate with vitality following autotransplantation. The success rate following an autotransplantation is 82%. The remaining 18% can usually still be treated successfully with a simple additional treatment. The tooth survival rate 10 years after autotransplantation is higher than 90%. The use of 3D techniques makes it possible to create a pre-operative replica of the donor tooth. With this, a new alveolus can be pr

Endodontic management of teeth afflicted with pulp canal obliteration faces a challenge due to the heightened risk of complications including excessive wear, perforation, and suboptimal chemomechanical preparation. This report aims to elucidate the clinical endodontic strategy employed in addressing pulp canal obliteration after a history of dental trauma and an associated periradicular lesion in an upper lateral incisor. A patient visited the dental emergency department with symptoms of apical swelling, acute persistent pain, and discoloration of tooth 22. Following comprehensive clinical eva

In the presented case extensive tooth damage has been caused by an eating disorder (bulimia nervosa coupled with frequent vomiting). Although the patient's premised disorder has been treated successfully, palatal and occlusal surfaces of the upper teeth were profoundly damaged due to previous acidic erosion. There was also a significant hypersensitivity of upper teeth, and the patient was dissatisfied with the aesthetics of the upper teeth as well. In order to treat pain symptom, replace lost hard dental tissues, and restore aesthetics, porcelain covered zirconium dioxide crowns of upper teeth

This study evaluated fracture resistance in class II slot packable composite restorations with and without the use of a flowable composite liner. A conventional microhybrid composite was used as a control. Thirty-six sound, caries-free human mandibulary molar teeth were used. Separate mesio-occlusal and disto-occlusal class II slot cavity preparations were made in each tooth. The prepared teeth were randomly divided into three groups of 12 teeth. Two packable composites (Surefil, Filtek P60) and one microhybrid composite (Filtek Z250) with their respective manufacturer's bonding agents were us

BACKGROUND: Maxillary growth in patients with clefts is highly variable. The authors' aim was to investigate whether severity of maxillary hypoplasia is associated with the presence of permanent tooth agenesis in children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate.
METHODS: Fifty children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate were divided into two groups of 25 children. One group had tooth agenesis of the cleft maxillary lateral incisor, whereas the other did not. Panoramic radiographs, lateral cephalometric radiographs, and dental casts were available for all children in the mixed
