Development of a tooth movement model of root resorption during intrusive orthodontic treatment.

There is a high risk of external apical root resorption (EARR) following the application of intrusive orthodontic forces to the apical root. However, there is a lack of suitable animal models to study this phenomenon in depth. This study compared the usability of three different types of loops, namely, vertical helical loop, box loop, and L loop, for preparing a rat model of orthodontic tooth movement with invasive forces. Results showed a significant downward movement in the first molar of the rat after L loop placement for 14 days. Three-dimensional reconstructed images showed root resorptio

Extreme root resorption associated with induced tooth movement: a protocol for clinical management.

Cases in which teeth have only the cervical third remaining from orthodontically induced external root resorption, cast the following doubts: 1) What care should be taken to keep these teeth in mouth with the least risk possible? 2) What care should be taken with regards to reading of imaging exams, particularly in terms of accurately determining cervical root and bone loss? 3) Why is not endodontic treatment recommended in these cases? The present study aims at shedding light on the aforementioned topics so as to induce new insights into the theme.

Sympathectomy causes increased root resorption after orthodontic tooth movement in rats: immunohistochemical study.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the sympathetic nervous system modulates inflammatory responses and bone remodeling. We have studied the effects of sympathectomy and orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on root resorption, immunocompetent cell recruitment, neuropeptide, neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1-R), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) expression. Experimental rats (n=8) had the right superior cervical ganglion surgically removed, whereas control rats (n=6) underwent sham surgery. Three days later, all rats had the right maxillary first molar moved mesially by an orthodontic appliance. The rats were perf

Tooth root resorption associated with a familial bone dysplasia affecting mother and daughter.

The dental findings are presented of a mother and daughter who suffer from an as yet unclassified bone dysplasia that shows features of both hereditary hyperphosphatasia and familial expansile osteolysis. Both patients have experienced progressive root resorption of permanent teeth, deafness, and high alkaline phosphatase levels. The mother has a more advanced bone dysplasia which has led to progressive skeletal deformity and bone pain. The kindred is consistent with an autosomal dominant pattern, and the mutation(s) is thought to be in chromosome 18q21-22 region. Conventional treatment strate

Altering tooth eruption by blocking bone resorption--the local delivery of bafilomycin A1.

Tooth eruption is a complicated process requiring a coordination of bone resorption and bone formation by a variety of factors in and around the dental follicle proper and bone resorption is the rate-limiting step early in the process. We have recently described a method to deliver to the crypt of erupting dog premolars a reversible blocker of bone resorption, bafilomycin A1, and shown that its delivery for two week blocks bone resorption and eruption during this period without effect on adjacent teeth or on bone formation. In this study we show that delivery of 10(-6) M bafilomycin A1 via a c

Strontium ranelate modulates circular RNA BACH1/microRNA-155-5p to ameliorate root resorption and tooth anchoring during orthodontic tooth movement.

The tooth movement is a fundamental requirement during any orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to investigate the action and mechanism of strontium ranelate (SR) in orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Rats were given SR by gavage daily, along with lentiviral vectors interfering with circBACH1 or miR-155-5p. Three weeks later, an OTM rat model was established. RANKL and osteoprotegerin (OpG) in serum were measured. The gap between the first and second molar and root resorption were examined. Osteoclast test was used; and root condition was examined. Detection of miR-155-5p, circBACH1, CLC7 an

Evaluation of the effects for root resorption in orthodontic tooth movement with micro-osteoperforations in mice.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Orthodontic treatment is one of the most demanding procedures available for both patients and clinicians. The challenges stem from the extended duration to achieve desired results, often necessitating surgical interventions, such as micro-osteoperforations (MOPs). This study aimed to investigate the biological effects and extent of changes resulting from these interventions. Specifically, we evaluated the degree of root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement accelerated by MOPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed the tooth movement rates and root resorption in eight-

Orthodontically induced cervical root resorption in humans is associated with the amount of tooth movement.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the variation in the amount of the orthodontically induced cervical root resorption and the association with several factors, such as the amount of tooth displacement, location of tooth in the maxilla or mandible, and presence of an interference that may influence the amount of root resorption. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study included 30 subjects (20 females, 10 males) with an age range of 11.3 to 43.0 years. Using a standardized experimental orthodontic tooth movement, 59 premolars were moved buccaly during 8 weeks with application of 1

Why not to treat the tooth canal to solve external root resorptions? Here are the principles!

This paper aims at exposing the foundations or reasons why, in cases of external tooth resorption, including those of orthodontic origin, one should not perform a root canal to treat it. That should be done only to teeth with contamination or pulp necrosis, to remove the periapical inflammation induced by microbial products. When facing cases of external tooth resorption, one's conduct must always respect the following sequence of steps: first of all, identifying the cause accurately; then, planning the therapeutic approach and, finally, adopting the conducts in a very well-founded way. The si

The Medical, Clinical, and Radiographic Aspects of Multiple Idiopathic Tooth Resorption: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Many causes of resorption remain unclear and are thus identified as idiopathic. In such cases, management is difficult, especially when multiple teeth are involved. The aim of the present study was to assess the literature regarding the medical, clinical, and radiographic aspects of multiple idiopathic resorptions (MIR) and to examine the factors associated with the risk of extraction. METHODS: The title and protocol were registered a priori in PROSPERO (CRD42020191564), and the study followed the PRISMA methodology. Four electronic databases were searched to include reviews and c

Increased Presence of Complement Factors and Mast Cells in Alveolar Bone and Tooth Resorption.

Periodontitis is the inflammatory destruction of the tooth-surrounding and -supporting tissue, resulting at worst in tooth loss. Another locally aggressive disease of the oral cavity is tooth resorption (TR). This is associated with the destruction of the dental mineralized tissue. However, the underlying pathomechanisms remain unknown. The complement system, as well as mast cells (MCs), are known to be involved in osteoclastogenesis and bone loss. The complement factors C3 and C5 were previously identified as key players in periodontal disease. Therefore, we hypothesize that complement factor

The effects of binge alcohol exposure on tooth movement and associated root resorption in rats.

BACKGROUND: Considering the increasing prevalence of alcohol use and the growing number of orthodontic patients, some orthodontic patients might engage in binge drinking during treatment. Nevertheless, little is known about the effect of alcohol use on orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into ethanol and control groups (n = 32). The rats received a single daily intraperitoneal injection of 20% (vol/vol) ethanol/saline solution at a dose of 3 g/kg of ethanol or saline for three consecutive days, and no injection was given during the remaining four days each week.
