Sympathectomy causes increased root resorption after orthodontic tooth movement in rats: immunohistochemical study.

Accumulating evidence suggests that the sympathetic nervous system modulates inflammatory responses and bone remodeling. We have studied the effects of sympathectomy and orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on root resorption, immunocompetent cell recruitment, neuropeptide, neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1-R), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) expression. Experimental rats (n=8) had the right superior cervical ganglion surgically removed, whereas control rats (n=6) underwent sham surgery. Three days later, all rats had the right maxillary first molar moved mesially by an orthodontic appliance. The rats were perf

Tooth root resorption associated with a familial bone dysplasia affecting mother and daughter.

The dental findings are presented of a mother and daughter who suffer from an as yet unclassified bone dysplasia that shows features of both hereditary hyperphosphatasia and familial expansile osteolysis. Both patients have experienced progressive root resorption of permanent teeth, deafness, and high alkaline phosphatase levels. The mother has a more advanced bone dysplasia which has led to progressive skeletal deformity and bone pain. The kindred is consistent with an autosomal dominant pattern, and the mutation(s) is thought to be in chromosome 18q21-22 region. Conventional treatment strate

3D-printable bioactive glass-based polymer-infiltrated ceramic for biomimetic tooth root applications.

Titanium implants are widely utilized for tooth root reconstruction due to their excellent mechanical and biological properties. However, their mechanical properties differ from those of dentin. This study aims to develop a 3D-printable polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) as a tooth root restoration material that mimics the natural root shape, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. A bioactive glass (BG)-based photocurable slurry was prepared for vat photopolymerization, printed, sintered, and subsequently polymer-infiltrated to form 3D-printable PICN (3D-PICN). For comparison, 3D

Restoring an Extremely Destructed Tooth with Flared Root Canal Walls: A Case Report.

Reconstructing severely damaged teeth has always presented a challenge when the remaining crown structure is limited, often requiring retention from the root canal using intracanal posts. However, the real challenge is when the root canal walls are also weak, and there is a high risk of vertical root fracture due to the wedging forces of a rigid post. This case report presents a tooth with extremely flared (0.3mm) root canal walls, successfully restored with a newly introduced polymer made of polyether ether ketone (PEEK), with one-year follow-up. Due to its close elastic modulus to dentin, ca

Sweet tooth: DNA profiling of a cranium from an isolated retained root fragment.

Sampling of healthy multi-rooted teeth is recommended for the genetic identification of human skeletal remains. However, this may not always be possible, as in the reported case consisting of an isolated human cranium found in an aggregate crushing and processing plant in Piedmont, Northwest Italy. The cranium displayed significant weathering, suggesting a post-mortem interval of several years, and was edentulous with the exception of the apical root fragment of the upper left canine, consequence of an antemortem horizontal fracture. Prolonged decalcification of the root fragment followed by p

Effects of fluoride intake on orthodontic tooth movement and orthodontically induced root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: Even though the beneficial effects of fluoride on enamel and root caries have been well documented, limited data are available concerning the effect of fluoride on orthodontically induced root resorption and tooth movement. Our objective was to investigate the effect of systemic fluoride administered from birth to 12 weeks on orthodontically induced root resorption and tooth movement in rat molars. METHODS: Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups. The negative control group received no sodium fluoride and had no tooth movement. The positive control group recei

Autogenous transplantation of mandibular third molar to replace tooth with vertical root fracture.

Autogenous tooth transplantation (ATT) can be considered when there is a hopeless molar tooth and suitable donor present. This report presents an unconventional case of successful ATT of a third molar replacing the adjacent fractured second molar in a 33 year old woman. This wisdom tooth had completely developed roots. Root-end filling with Calcium Enriched Mixture (CEM) cement was performed in the third molar. The second molar was extracted non-traumatically without any bone removal; the wisdom tooth was immediately transplanted into the recipient socket. No endodontic treatment was carried o

Root surface treatment with vitamin C in tooth replantation: microscopic study in rats.

AIM: Late tooth replantation is a worthy procedure, especially in growing patients, being the best option for tooth avulsion. This study evaluated the effects of root surface treatment with 2% acidulated phosphate sodium fluoride and effervescent vitamin C (Redoxon) in late replantation. METHODS: Twenty rat teeth (Rattus norvegicus, albinus, Wistar) were extracted and left on a table for 6 h. Then, the dental papilla and enamel organ were sectioned and the pulp was removed through the apex. After removal of the periodontal ligament with a blade, the animals were divided into 2 groups: Group I

Traumatic injury to permanent tooth resulting in complete root resorption: a case report.

When a tooth is avulsed and replanted following traumatic dental injury, complications such as replacement and inflammatory resorption may occur. Ultimately, resorption may result in loss of the tooth. This case report describes a traumatic injury to a permanent tooth resulting in complete root resorption within a short period, which required surgery. In the present case, improper treatment measures such as dry condition of the avulsed tooth before replantation and extra-oral retrograde root canal filling may have led to rapid complete root resorption. Even if it is impossible to avoid resorpt

Mapping of a gene causing mouse gutter-shaped tooth root to chromosome 5.

A study was conducted to identify the major candidate chromosome and to detect the region which included the candidate gene causing gutter-shaped root (GSR) in an inbred strain of mice. The candidate chromosomal analysis was performed on genetic crosses of C57L/J strain mice, which have GSR, and C57BL/6J strain mice, which have normal roots. Linkage analysis suggested that mouse chromosome 5 was one of the major candidates and therefore this chromosome was investigated in detail by individual genotyping of all backcross mice. The highest linkage was found at D5Mit161, and other high linkages w

[Tooth movement of an impacted lower 2nd premolar in the root developmental stage--a follow-up radiographic observation on the root formation].

A 9 year old girl presented an impacted lower right 2nd premolar which not only was in horizontal position, but its crown was directed lingually. As a lower right 2nd premolar was in such a position that normal eruption was impossible, the deciduous predecessor was extracted at 9 years of age, and then sufficient space had been created for the lower right 2nd premolar to be erupted, and the eruption of it was observed for about 2 years. 2 years later, radiographic indication showed that no spontaneous eruption of a lower right 2nd premolar was to be expected. At 11 years of age, surgical expos

Case report: Root canal treatment of maxillary second molar with a C - shaped distal buccal root: Is it a fused tooth?

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Fusion of the maxillary second molar (MSMs) and the maxillary third molar is a rare dental anomaly, posing challenges in diagnosis and treatment due to complex root and canal anatomy, which can lead to caries, periodontal, and pulpal issues. While extraction is sometimes favored, root canal therapy (RCT) can preserve natural dentition and improve patient outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old woman underwent a failed extraction of the left maxillary third molar and had chronic periapical inflammation in a fused maxillary second and third molar caused by severe

The osteoclastic activity in apical distal region of molar mesial roots affects orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in rats.

The utilization of optimal orthodontic force is crucial to prevent undesirable side effects and ensure efficient tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, the sensitivity of existing detection techniques is not sufficient, and the criteria for evaluating optimal force have not been yet established. Here, by employing 3D finite element analysis methodology, we found that the apical distal region (A-D region) of mesial roots is particularly sensitive to orthodontic force in rats. Tartrate-resistant acidic phosphatase (TRAP)-positive osteoclasts began accumulating in the A-D region un

Effects of size scaling on cellular dynamics and tissue patterning in tooth root organoids.

Organoids offer a novel platform to study developmental and reparative processes and hold promise as model systems for drug discovery and personalized medicine. To maximize their utility, we investigated the capacity of organoids, specifically tooth root organoids, to be scaled down in size. We previously established that dental pulp stem/progenitor cells (DPSCs) and periodontal ligament (PDL) stem/progenitor cells (PDLSCs) co-cultured using scaffold-free tissue engineering approaches, self-assemble into tooth root organoids with anatomically organized layers of pulp-, dentin-, cementum-, and

Load capacity and fracture modes of instrumented tooth roots under axial compression.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influences of root canal instrumentation on the load capacity and fracture modes of tooth roots under axial compression by performing mechanical tests and finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: Thirty bovine incisor roots were trimmed into cylinders of 5.0 mm diameter. They were randomly divided into two groups, one with root canals instrumented to ∼2.0 mm in diameter, and one without instrumentation. The specimens were fractured under uniaxial compression at a crosshead speed of 0.2 mm/min, and then micro-CT was used to reveal the fracture patterns in three dim
