A rare case of life-threatening penetrating oropharyngeal trauma caused by toothbrush in a child.

We present a case of 10 year-old boy with oropharyngeal injury caused by a toothbrush which penetrated the parapharyngeal space. Initial examination revealed broken end of the toothbrush in oral cavity with the head of the toothbrush having bristles, beyond the soft palate. Tongue and palate were lacerated and there were blood and oral secretions in the oral cavity. Patient was having bradycardia. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed the toothbrush head near the carotid artery, the carotid being laterally displaced. The foreign body was surgically removed without any intraoperative or postoper

Safety of oscillating-rotating powered brushes compared to manual toothbrushes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Oscillating-rotating power toothbrushes have been proven clinically efficacious. To our knowledge, a comprehensive review of all clinical and laboratory investigations solely comparing the safety of these toothbrushes to the standard of care (i.e., manual toothbrushes) has not been published. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the literature concerning the relative soft and/or hard tissue safety outcomes with the use of oscillating-rotating toothbrushes compared to manual toothbrushes. METHODS: With the use of electronic databases of the National Library of Medicine (

Development of the Evolve toothbrush: laboratory evaluations of gingival margin cleaning and subgingival access.

OBJECTIVE: The Evolve toothbrush has been developed with three heads that adjust to the tooth shape with brushing. With the exertion of gentle pressure on the center head against the tooth cusps, the two outer heads bend and conform to the tooth anatomy at the gingival areas around each tooth. In preliminary clinical observations, decreased plaque and improved gingival appearance was observed after one and two weeks of unsupervised product use. The purpose of this laboratory research was to evaluate the ability of the Evolve toothbrush bristles to remove artificial plaque deposits at and aroun

Tongue-cleaning methods: a comparative clinical trial employing a toothbrush and a tongue scraper.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that approximately 85% of all halitosis cases have their origin within the mouth; of these, 50% are caused by tongue residues. Previous studies have established that hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans are the primary components of halitosis. Thus, tongue cleaning gains importance as a means of halitosis management. METHODS: This investigation compared the efficacy of two mechanical methods for tongue cleaning through a handheld sulfide monitor. This crossover trial was carried out with 10 healthy subjects, 20 to 50 years old. Before the baseline measurement of the vol

Efficacy of the Sonicare toothbrush fluid dynamic action on removal of human supragingival plaque.

The fluid pressure and shear forces generated by the high frequency bristle motion of the Sonicare sonic toothbrush remove adherent colonies of cultured bacteria from model dental surfaces in vitro. These dynamic fluid effects can remove bacteria in vitro even at distances up to 4 mm beyond the tips of the bristles. To evaluate the efficacy of the Sonicare in removing actual human plaque deposits formed in vivo, an intraoral model was developed. Enamel sections were obtained from extracted human teeth and mounted on acrylic resin palatal prostheses, worn by two volunteers. Six enamel sections

Unexpected death from hepatic abscess 16 months after toothbrush ingestion.

The development of a hepatic abscess secondary to foreign body (FB) ingestion remains rare in forensic practice. Herein, we present a case of a prisoner who died in the hospital and a forensic autopsy was performed to confirm the cause of death. A 14.5-cm-long toothbrush handle was found in the duodenum and had penetrated the right lobe of the liver, consistent with the repeated abdominal pain in his clinical history. The clinical history and investigation confirmed that he had ingested the toothbrush handle 16 months prior. This case highlights a rare complication of intentional ingestion of

"Toothbrush" the Feet: A Periodic Mechanical Stimulus for Healing of a Severe Chronic Leg Ulcer.

Chronic wounds develop when the sequence of healing events are disrupted, usually in patients with underlying diseases such as diabetes mellitus, venous insufficiency, peripheral artery disease, and neuropathies and they affect most often the lower extremities. We present a 68-year-old woman with plantar ulceration, lasting for approximately 18 months, resistant to healing with conventional therapy and various modalities we used. The patient had a long history of seronegative enteropathic arthritis, Crohn's disease, secondary fibrillar amyloidosis, multiplex neuropathy, and small vessel vascul

The toothbrush: a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of penetrating oropharyngeal trauma in children.

We present the case of a 10-year-old girl with pharyngeal injury caused by a toothbrush, the snapped head of which lodged in her upper oropharyngeal wall. Initial examination of the oral cavity did not reveal bleeding, a foreign body, or a wound. Nasopharyngoscopy showed lodgment of the toothbrush piece in the upper oropharynx, pulsating in synchrony with heartbeats. Computed tomography showed the toothbrush head near the carotid artery. The foreign body was surgically removed without any intraoperative or postoperative complications. The diagnosis and management of oropharyngeal injuries by s

An unusual mode of injury-implantation of a broken toothbrush medial to ramus: report of a case.

Impalement injury and implantation of a foreign body in the oral cavity is common in young children. Typically the child falls with the foreign body in the mouth resulting in implantation of the object at various sites in the oral cavity. It is quite unusual to have the head of a toothbrush with bristles implanted fully in the soft tissue medial to the ramus, in the region of pterygomandibular space, following an injury with a cricket ball without a history of fall. A case of an unusual foreign body implanted at an unusual site by an unusual injury is being presented.

Periodontal status of adult Sudanese habitual users of miswak chewing sticks or toothbrushes.

Miswak chewing sticks are prepared from the roots or twigs of Salvadora persica plants. They are widely used as a traditional oral hygiene tool in several African and Middle Eastern countries. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the periodontal status of adult Sudanese habitual miswak and toothbrush users. The study population comprised male miswak users (n = 109) and toothbrush users (n = 104) with age range 20-65 years (mean 36.6 years) having 18 or more teeth present. They were recruited among employees and students at the Medical Sciences Campus in Khartoum, Sudan. One examiner

Mechanically driven aerosol emissions from electric toothbrushing: An overlooked indoor source with exposure and infection risk implications.

Indoor aerosol emissions are predominantly attributed to respiratory activities, whereas non-respiratory sources associated with routine hygiene behaviors remain largely overlooked. Here, we investigated aerosol generation during electric toothbrushing through 1290 controlled chamber tests involving human participants. Results showed that emissions were dominated by respirable fine particles, with over 85% below 2.5 μm, while ultrafine particle levels showed no clear increase relative to the pre-brushing baseline, indicating a distinct emission regime compared to respiratory processes. Emissio

Efficacy of Sonic-Powered Toothbrushing by Caregivers in Individuals With Severe Disability: A Randomized Parallel-Group Study.

OBJECTIVES: Caregivers play an important role in providing oral hygiene to individuals with severe disabilities. However, few studies have evaluated the effect of toothbrushing by caregivers. Thus, this study aimed to compare the effects of toothbrushing by caregivers using sonic-powered and manual toothbrushes on oral hygiene in individuals with severe disabilities. METHODS: This was arandomized, single-blind (investigator), 32-week clinical trial. A total of 41 patients (25 males, mean age 33.5 years) were included in the study. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: the sonic-power

Effectiveness of Different Toothbrushing Methods on Plaque Accumulation and Gingival Health in Patients With Fixed Orthodontic Appliances.

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining adequate oral hygiene during fixed orthodontic treatment is challenging because brackets, archwires, and ligatures promote plaque retention and increase the risk of gingival inflammation. Various toothbrush designs have been introduced to improve plaque removal; however, their comparative effectiveness in orthodontic patients remains unclear. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of different toothbrushing methods in maintaining plaque control and gingival health among patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study incl

Toothbrushing with Activated Charcoal May Stain Enamel White Spot Lesions: A 4-Year Follow-up Case Report.

Activated charcoal (AC)-containing products have been widely advertised over the internet, but evidence of their efficacy and safety are still scarce. Few studies have addressed their abrasivity and whitening efficacy, but none has addressed their staining potential. Therefore, this study aimed to report irreversible staining caused on enamel white spot lesions (WSLs) after orthodontic treatment caused by AC powder used for toothbrushing. A fifteen year-old patient sought the dental clinic complaining about dark discolorations on maxillary anterior teeth after toothbrushing with a fluoride-fre
