Effects of herbal and non-herbal toothpastes on plaque and gingivitis: A clinical comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Presence of plaque may be the culprit for dental caries, gingivitis, periodontal problems, and halitosis. Many mechanical aids are practiced worldwide to remove or control plaque, including tooth brushes, dental floss, mouth rinses, and dentifrices. The objective of this clinical study was to investigate the effectiveness of herbal toothpaste (Dabur Red) in controlling plaque and gingivitis, as compared to conventional (non-herbal) dentifrice (Pepsodent). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 30 subjects aged 35-43 years with established gingivitis and at least 20 natural teeth, a

Two cases of toothpaste tumour in elderly women, a longitudinal case investigation.

BACKGROUND: Caseous calcification of the mitral annulus (CCMA), also referred to as 'toothpaste tumour', is a rare variant of calcification of the mitral annulus. The prognosis and pathogenesis of CCMA remain obscure. Overall CCMA is benign and usually asymptomatic, but can manifest with abscess formation, embolic events such as stroke or significant mitral valve dysfunction. CASE SUMMARY: We report two cases of CCMA in elderly female patients.Patient 1 presented with dyspnoea and was diagnosed with CCMA and aortic valve stenosis. When her symptoms worsened over time, severe coronary artery d

Dynamics of root caries in older adults using high-fluoride toothpaste.

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in the activity pattern of root caries lesions (RCLs) treated with fluoridated dentifrices (1450 vs 5000 ppm F) in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: We used data from a previous randomized controlled clinical trial that evaluated the effectiveness of high-fluoride dentifrices for treating RCLs. A total of 2071 active and inactive RCLs initially detected were followed-up for 2 years. Modified Nyvad's criteria were used to determine activity status and each lesion was categorized into one of eight possible patterns of activity or inactivity at baseline, one

[The use of fluoride-free toothpaste: motivations and experiences of patients and perspectives of providers].

The use of fluoride-free toothpaste seems to be on the increase in recent years, despite the proven effectiveness of fluorides in preventing dental caries. Adults often choose fluoride-free toothpaste because they consider fluoride harmful or unnecessary, prefer organic or natural products, and avoid artificial additives. Oral healthcare providers generally recommend fluoride toothpaste due to its proven effectiveness but consider it important to approach patients with doubts or objections respectfully. By regularly asking about toothpaste use in a non-judgmental way, they are better able to a

A silica toothpaste containing blue covarine: a new technological breakthrough in whitening.

There continues to be a demand from consumers and patients for products that whiten teeth. These products are generally either peroxide-based bleaching formats to improve intrinsic tooth colour or whitening toothpastes with enhanced physical and chemical cleaning properties to remove and prevent extrinsic tooth stain. Through the understanding of colour science and its application to tooth colour a new approach to tooth whitening is now possible from toothpaste. This is achieved by the deposition of blue covarine onto the tooth surface where it changes the optical properties of the teeth such

Efficacy of a herbal toothpaste on patients with established gingivitis--a randomized controlled trial.

The aim of this randomised, double blind controlled trial was to verify the efficacy of a herbal dentifrice on the reduction of plaque and gingivitis. Forty eight volunteers with established gingivitis were randomly assigned to either a test group (herbal dentifrice) or positive control group (dentifrice with triclosan and fluoride). The dentifrices were distributed in plain white tubes by an independent pharmacy, which revealed the contents of each tube only after the experimental period. Plaque and gingivitis assessments were carried out on baseline and after 28 days of product use. All exam

Influence of the relative enamel abrasivity of toothpastes (REA value) on the wear of eroded enamel.

Eroded enamel is more susceptible to abrasion than healthy one. The present study aims to determine the impact of toothpaste abrasiveness (REA-value) and brushing force on enamel wear after erosion. 140 enamel samples from bovine teeth were divided into seven groups (N = 20). Each group was assigned a different toothpaste with varying levels of abrasiveness (groups 1+2: Candida Parodin (REA 2), groups 3+4: Candida Multicare (REA 9), and groups 5+6: Candida White Micro Crystals (REA 19)). The samples were first exposed to a citric acid solution (pH 2.60; 2 min) to simulate an erosive attack and

Do Abrasives Play a Role in Toothpaste Efficacy against Erosion/Abrasion?

Abrasives may counteract the efficacy of anti-erosion toothpastes either due to physical effects or due to interaction with active agents. This study aimed to investigate whether the amount of abrasives is a determinant for the efficacy of Sn2+-containing toothpastes with or without chitosan additive. Enamel samples were eroded (0.50 wt% citric acid, pH 2.5; 6 × 2 min/day) on a shaking desk - 30/min in experiment 1 (E1) and 35/min in experiments 2 (E2) and 3 (E3) - and immersed in toothpaste slurries (2 × 2 min).
