One hundred and fifteen patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding diagnosed, between august 1992 and july 1995, at the "Victor Ramos Guardia" General Hospital in Huaraz (3,100 m.o.s.l.), Ancash, Perú, are here studied to know about epidemiologics and clinical aspects of this condition at high altitude. In all, the patients on upper endoscopy were done and gastric biopsy when it was required. The incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding for the population at risk was 9.6/ 10,000 in habitants by year, and the institutional prevalence was 12.3/1,000 hospital discharges. All the patients w

BACKGROUND: Challenging behaviours are highly prevalent in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), but little is known about the prevalence and course of these behaviours during adulthood. The aims of this study were to describe the topography of challenging behaviours in a cohort of 106 young adults with ASD and to identify the risk factors for challenging behaviours. Our secondary objective was to study the changes in challenging behaviours from adolescence to early adult years.
METHOD: The present study uses data from the EpiTED prospective follow-up study in France.

BACKGROUND: Microstates are periods of characteristic electroencephalographic signal topography that are related to activity in brain networks. Previous work has identified abnormal microstate parameters in individuals with psychotic disorders. We combined microstate analysis with sample entropy analysis to study the dynamics of resting-state networks in patients with early-course psychosis.
METHODS: We used microstate analysis to transform resting-state high-density electroencephalography data from 22 patients with early-course psychosis and 22 healthy control subjects into sequences of char

Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus, two bacterial strains commonly associated with biofilm-related medical infections and food poisoning, can rapidly colonize biotic and abiotic surfaces. The present study investigates the ability of anodic alumina surfaces with nanoporous surface topography to minimize the attachment and biofilm formation mediated by these pathogenic bacterial strains. Early attachment and subsequent biofilm development were retarded on surfaces with nanopores of 15-25 nm in diameter compared to surfaces with 50-100 nm pore diameter and nanosmooth surfaces.

Recent changes in the aetiology and epidemiology of invasive candidiasis have serious implications for current and future diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. The aim of the current review was to discuss the epidemiology of invasive candidiasis, the distribution of Candida species in different regions of the world, the medical concerns of the changing aetiology and the emergence of antifungal resistance. Overall burden of invasive candidiasis remains high, especially in vulnerable persons, such as the elderly, immunosuppressed or debilitated patients. Moreover, there is a progressive shift in t

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the result of cross-species transmission of simian immunodeficiency virus from chimpanzees (SIVcpz). SIVcpz is a chimeric virus which shares common ancestors with viruses infecting red-capped mangabeys and a subset of guenon species. The epidemiology of SIV infection in hominoids is characterized by low prevalences and an uneven geographic distribution. Surveys in Cameroon indicated that two closely related members of the guenon species subset, mustached guenons and greater spot-nosed guenons, infected with SIVmus and SIVgsn, respectively, also ha

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was once a severe parasitic disease in China. Thanks to the great efforts of integrated control, VL was eliminated in most epidemic areas, except for certain western provinces (autonomous region) at the end of 1950s. From then on, VL gained less attention and has seemed to spread, especially in the last 15 years. Infants are the most important population threatened by VL. However, there have been few studies on the endemic characteristics of infantile VL in China.
METHODS: Infantile VL cases were collected from the online National Infectious Diseases Re

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is caused by the trypanosomatid parasite Leishmania infantum (=Leishmania chagasi), and is epidemiologically relevant due to its wide geographic distribution, the number of annual cases reported and the increase in its co-infection with HIV. Two vector species have been incriminated in the Americas: Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia evansi. In Colombia, L. longipalpis is distributed along the Magdalena River Valley while L. evansi is only found in the northern part of the Country. Regarding the epidemiology of the disease, in Colombia the incidence of VL has decre

As a useful tool for geographical cluster detection of events, the spatial scan statistic is widely applied in many fields and plays an increasingly important role. The classic version of the spatial scan statistic for the binary outcome is developed by Kulldorff, based on the Bernoulli or the Poisson probability model. In this paper, we apply the Hypergeometric probability model to construct the likelihood function under the null hypothesis. Compared with existing methods, the likelihood function under the null hypothesis is an alternative and indirect method to identify the potential cluster

This article traces the travels of the Scottish physician Archibald Smith through the Peruvian Andes between the 1820s and 1860s. Despite his prominent role in the nineteenth-century Peruvian medical scene, almost nothing has been written on Archibald Smith. By exploring Smith's medical activities, publications, and debates, this article intends to uncover unexplored areas of Peruvian medical history, such as the animosity between local and foreign physicians during the post-Independence war era and the important role played by medical geography as a scientific discipline for redefining ethnic

BACKGROUND: In Lower Saxony the analysis of notification data according to the infection protection law is based on two pillars: one pillar is the weekly analysis to identify clusters and locally non-detectable outbreaks by an early warning system. The second pillar is an annual reporting system for obtaining an overall picture and for identifying long-term trends. In both fields methods of spatial statistics are applied.
METHODS: For the 16 most frequent notifiable diseases, the notification data of the districts of Lower Saxony are analysed and presented on the Internet. The presentation st

The intensity of UV-A and UV-B-radiation in Switzerland shows big differences that result from the various altitudes, the season and the time of the day. Additionally the intensity of UV-radiation is influenced by other factors like aerosols, cloudiness and ozone. In higher altitudes there is an additional enhancement by reflection of snow. The most important consequences of the UV-radiation for the population are, however, relevant in spring and summer time during the bathing season and during the late winter season for ski tourists. On a day with a clear sky in summer the UV-radiation can re

BACKGROUND: Bayesian methods have been used to generate country-level and global maps of malaria prevalence. With increasing availability of detailed malaria surveillance data, these methodologies can also be used to identify fine-scale heterogeneity of malaria parasitaemia for operational prevention and control of malaria.
METHODS: In this article, a Bayesian geostatistical model was applied to six malaria parasitaemia surveys conducted during rainy and dry seasons between November 2010 and 2013 to characterize the micro-scale spatial heterogeneity of malaria risk in northern Ghana.

Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is endemic in Argentina. During 2005 an outbreak occurred in Córdoba. From January to April of 2010 a new outbreak occurred in Córdoba city with a lower magnitude than the one reported in 2005. Understanding the association of different landscape elements related to SLEV hosts and vectors in urban environments is important for identifying high risk areas for human infections, which was here evaluated. The current study uses a case-control approach at a household geographical location, considering symptomatic and asymptomatic human infections produced by SL

BACKGROUND: Culex tritaeniorhynchus is the primary vector of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a leading cause of encephalitis in Asia. JEV is transmitted in an enzootic cycle involving large wading birds as the reservoirs and swine as amplifying hosts. The development of a JEV vaccine reduced the number of JE cases in regions with comprehensive childhood vaccination programs, such as in Japan and the Republic of Korea. However, the lack of vaccine programs or insufficient coverage of populations in other endemic countries leaves many people susceptible to JEV. The aim of this study was to pr

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, using bacteraemia as a marker, shows a striking geographical pattern in Europe. The prevalence of MRSA is low in Northern European countries, increases into central Europe and reaches its highest levels in the Mediterranean region. This has been attributed to varying levels of implementation of infection control and antibiotic stewardship (ICAS) programmes, but reasons for this variation have not been clearly established.
AIM: To investigate the possible impact of national cultural dimensions on the
