Assessing the role(s) of human touch in immersive entertainment.

Physical touch plays an important role in various forms of immersive entertainment, influencing emotional engagement, presence, and narrative immersion. In this narrative historical review, we explore the significance of direct interpersonal (social) touch in entertainment contexts. This includes theme parks, immersive theater, participatory performance art, and digitally mediated touch (e.g., haptic feedback in virtual reality [VR], gaming, and film). By analyzing examples such as Disneyland character interactions, Sleep No More, and audience participation in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, we

"Definitely a toaster": Identifying container contents by touch and sound.

Can you tell what's inside a sealed container just by touching it? Prior work in "container haptics" has focused on numbers-how many marbles are rolling around, or how full a bottle is. Here, we explore whether humans can make qualitative judgments-what kind of thing is inside-without seeing it. Across three studies, participants explored containers filled with dry food items (e.g., flour or granola) using touch, with or without sound. Surprisingly, even with no visual (or auditory cues), participants could often identify, or at least describe, the contents based on texture, size, and density.

Club-like receptors respond to light touch but not to whisking.

Rodents explore their environment by actively whisking and contacting objects with their whiskers. Each whisker follicle contains hundreds of mechanoreceptors, but how specific afferents distinguish between self-motion and touch remains unclear. Here, using artificial whisking in male rats, intra-axonal recordings, and morphological reconstruction, we identify a distinct mechanoreceptor subtype-club-like endings-that respond exclusively to touch and remain silent during whisking. In contrast, Merkel and lanceolate endings exhibit mixed selectivity. Club-like endings are arranged in a single-la

Caldendrin Is a Repressor of PIEZO2 Channels and Touch Sensation in Mice.

The sense of touch is crucial for cognitive, emotional, and social development and relies on mechanically activated (MA) ion channels that transduce force into an electrical signal. Despite advances in the molecular characterization of these channels, the physiological factors that control their activity are poorly understood. Here, we used behavioral assays, electrophysiological recordings, and various mouse strains (males and females analyzed separately) to investigate the role of the calmodulin-like Ca2+ sensor, caldendrin, as a key regulator of MA channels and their roles in touch sensatio

Alpha Oscillations Are Involved in Localizing Touch on Handheld Tools.

The population of kisspeptin neurons located in the rostral periventricular area of the third ventricle (RP3V) is thought to have a key role in generating the GnRH surge that triggers ovulation. Using a modified GCaMP fibre photometry procedure, we have been able to record the in vivo population activity of RP3VKISS neurons across the estrous cycle of female mice. A marked increase in GCaMP activity was detected beginning on the afternoon of proestrus that lasted in total for 13±1 hr. This was comprised of slow baseline oscillations with a period of 91±4 min associated with high-frequency rapi

Does "no-touch" technique hysteroscopy increase the risk of infection?

OBJECTIVE: Today, thanks to its many advantages, hysteroscopy with a vaginoscopic approach (no-touch) is increasingly being used more in outpatient diagnoses and treatments. However, there are concerns that the "no-touch" technique increases ascending genital tract infections since a speculum is not inserted, and disinfection of the cervix cannot achieve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2011 and 2017, 302 patients who underwent office hysteroscopy with the vaginoscopic approach (group 1) and 254 patients who underwent hysteroscopy with the standard method under anesthesia in the operating room

Contact evolution of dry and hydrated fingertips at initial touch.

Pressing the fingertips into surfaces causes skin deformations that enable humans to grip objects and sense their physical properties. This process involves intricate finger geometry, non-uniform tissue properties, and moisture, complicating the underlying contact mechanics. Here we explore the initial contact evolution of dry and hydrated fingers to isolate the roles of governing physical factors. Two participants gradually pressed an index finger on a glass surface under three moisture conditions: dry, water-hydrated, and glycerin-hydrated. Gross and real contact area were optically measured

The "no-touch" technique in the flexible ureteroscopic approach of renal stones.

Large meta-analyses demonstrated that ureteral access sheaths (UAS) have specific complications during and after flexible ureteroscopy (fURS). The present study focused on the technical aspects, advantages, drawbacks, and limitations of the latest "no-touch" technique (NTT) in the flexible ureteroscopic therapeutic approach of renal stones. A total of 288 patients with a single pyelocaliceal stone (largest diameter between 11 and 29 mm) underwent fURS: 144 using the 12/14 Fr UAS (group 1) and 144 without UAS (group 2). For NTT, we used four types of ureteroscopes: Olympus URF-V2 (8.5 Fr) - 33

Manual Shunt Connector Tool to Aid in No-Touch Technique.

BACKGROUND: Given the morbidity and cost associated with cerebrospinal fluid shunt infections, many neurosurgical protocols implement "no-touch" technique to minimize infection. However, current surgical tools are not designed specifically for this task and surgeons often resort to using their hands to connect the shunt catheter to the valve. OBJECTIVE: To develop an efficient and effective shunt assembly tool. METHODS: Prototypes were designed using computer assisted software and machined in stainless steel. The amount of time and number of attempts it took volunteers to connect a Bacticel

Neglect of Older People: Touching on Forensic and Pathophysiological Aspects.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neglect of older people is common and may result in fatal and nonfatal outcomes. Normal changes of aging and disease-related symptoms may overlap with markers of neglect and lead to under-detection. This review aims to delineate medical, psychiatric, and pathophysiological indicators in the victim-identified in forensic case reports-to point out areas of overlap and raise awareness in Health Care Professionals. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Medical and forensic databases were searched with the search terms: neglect, elder, elderly, forensic, homicide for detailed cas

The neural basis of perceived intensity in natural and artificial touch.

Electrical stimulation of sensory nerves is a powerful tool for studying neural coding because it can activate neural populations in ways that natural stimulation cannot. Electrical stimulation of the nerve has also been used to restore sensation to patients who have suffered the loss of a limb. We have used long-term implanted electrical interfaces to elucidate the neural basis of perceived intensity in the sense of touch. To this end, we assessed the sensory correlates of neural firing rate and neuronal population recruitment independently by varying two parameters of nerve stimulation: puls

Touch Perception Altered by Chronic Pain and by Opioid Blockade.

Touch plays a significant role in human social behavior and social communication, and its rewarding nature has been suggested to involve opioids. Opioid blockade in monkeys leads to increased solicitation and receipt of grooming, suggesting heightened enjoyment of touch. We sought to study the role of endogenous opioids in perception of affective touch in healthy adults and in patients with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition shown to involve reduced opioid receptor availability. The pleasantness of touch has been linked to the activation of C-tactile fibers, which respond maximally to slow

Similarities between digits' movements in grasping, touching and pushing.

In order to find out whether the movements of single digits are controlled in a special way when grasping, we compared the movements of the digits when grasping an object with their movements in comparable single-digit tasks: pushing or lightly tapping the same object at the same place. The movements of the digits in grasping were very similar to the movements in the single-digit tasks. To determine to what extent the hand transport and grip formation in grasping emerges from a synchronised motion of individual digits, we combined movements of finger and thumb in the single-digit tasks to obta

The development of maternal touch across the first year of life.

The developmental trajectories of specific forms of maternal touch during natural caregiving were examined across the first year in relation to the development of mother-infant reciprocal communication. One hundred and thirty-one mothers and infants in four groups aged 3, 6, 9, and 12 months were observed in a cross-sectional design at home during natural caregiving and mother-child play sessions. Microanalytic coding of the caregiving sessions considered nine forms of maternal touch, which were aggregated into three global touch categories: affectionate, stimulating, and instrumental. Play se

Effects of modeling and topic stimulus on self-referent touching.

Self-touching is defined as self-directed touches, e.g., scratching or rubbing, that have no apparent conscious motivation. Earlier research on self-touching focused on internal processes associated with self-touching, e.g., mental conflict, while more recent research has considered external motivators, such as an auditory or visual presentation of a provocative stimulus, e.g., leeches. Here, 110 undergraduate psychology students (68 women, 42 men; M age = 18.7 yr., SD = 1.0) were shown a video about chiggers to replicate previous findings, while simultaneously studying the social influence of

Value of touch preparations (imprints) for diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: The clinical diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis is confirmed by demonstrating the organism on a superficial smear or on a biopsy of the lesion. Misdiagnosis in a biopsy specimen may be due to scanty Leishmania organisms that may not be identified in histologic sections. METHODS: Punch biopsies of skin lesions, suspected clinically to be cutaneous leishmaniasis, from 29 patients were taken. Touch smears on slides were air-dried, fixed with methyl alcohol, and stained with Giemsa stain. Results of routine histologic examination were then compared with those of touch preparation.
