Field efficacy of Febantel, Pyrantel embonate and Praziquantel (Drontal® Tasty) against naturally acquired intestinal helminths of hunting dogs in southern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Dogs in rural areas and hunting dogs in particular, are at higher risk of intestinal helminth infections compared with family dogs. Thus, certain management practices including faecal/coprological analysis, implementing regular deworming protocols, post-treatment evaluations and high-quality hygiene are required in hunting dogs to maintain their health and activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Drontal® Tasty (Vetoquinol S.A.) for the treatment of gastrointestinal helminths in naturally infected hunting dogs in Italy during the hunting and non-hunting seaso

Detection and quantification of Spirocerca lupi by HRM qPCR in fecal samples from dogs with spirocercosis.

BACKGROUND: Spirocerca lupi, the dog oesophageal nematode, causes a potentially fatal disease in domestic dogs, and is currently clinically diagnosed by coproscopy and oesophagoscopy. To date, a single molecular method, a semi-nested PCR, targeting the cox1 gene, has been developed to aid in the diagnosis of spirocercosis. The present study describes three novel high-resolution melt (HRM) quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays targeting fragments of the ITS1, 18S and cytb loci of S. lupi. The performance of these molecular assays in feces was compared to fecal flotation and to the previously described

Regression models to assess the risk factors of canine gastrointestinal parasitism.

Gastrointestinal parasites, protozoa and helminths, remain a common important finding in dogs presented to veterinary medical practices. Moreover, dogs may play an active role in the transmission of enteric parasites to humans, given their cohabitation, making canine gastrointestinal parasitism an issue of major concern for public health. To get an overview of the current state of canine gastrointestinal parasites' prevalence in Greece, a total of 1036 faecal samples were collected from dogs either presented in veterinary clinics or in animal shelters. Samples were examined by a combined sedim

Prevalence of intestinal helminths of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in central Europe (Poland): a significant zoonotic threat.

BACKGROUND: The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is widely distributed in the world; in central Europe, it is the most numerous wild species of the family Canidae. It can play the role of a definitive host for many intestinal parasites, including zoonotic helminths. Poland, with its geographical location (central Europe), is an interesting area for parasitological investigations of this species. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the prevalence of intestinal helminths in red foxes in different regions of Poland. METHODS: Intestines of 473 red foxes from four different regions were exami

Presence of Echinococcus granulosussensulato in the endoparasitic fauna of feral dogs in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

The feral dog population from Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) has affected provincial sheep production, and is responsible for the decrease of 43% of the sheep stock. In addition, feral dogs preys on the native fauna, especially the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), a species protected by law. Except for some data on the aforementioned impact, very little is known about feral dogs features in this region, such as distribution, abundance, diet, reproduction, health status, among others. Therefore, a descriptive observational study was carried out in the period 2018-2021 in Tierra del Fuego, with the aim to

Field efficacy and safety of a novel oral chewable tablet containing sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel (Simparica Trio™) against naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infections in dogs presented as veterinary patients in Europe and the USA.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal nematodes are parasites that commonly infect dogs, and infections can be subclinical or may cause considerable clinical disease. Some species are zoonotic and may also cause clinical disease in humans. Year-round treatment of dogs is recommended to eliminate existing infections, which also indirectly reduces the potential for subsequent human exposure to zoonotic species. Here we present two studies that evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel chewable oral tablet containing sarolaner, moxidectin and pyrantel against gastrointestinal nematode infections in dog

Serological detection of circulating Angiostrongylus vasorum antigen and specific antibodies in dogs from central and northern Italy.

The most frequently employed method for the diagnosis of Angiostrongylus vasorum in dogs is the detection of first stage larvae (L1) in faeces. The sensitivity of coproscopy, however, is limited in case of low parasite load, intermittent larval excretion, and during pre-patency. An epidemiological survey on dogs was conducted applying serological methods in two Italian regions where angiostrongylosis is endemic in foxes. 265 dog serum samples from Tuscany (central Italy - site A) and 447 from Liguria (north-western Italy - site B) were tested with a sandwich-ELISA for detection of circulating

Emerging Trichomonad Infections in Companion Animals: Rapid Visual Detection of Pentatrichomonas hominis and Tritrichomonas foetus Using an RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a Assay.

Pentatrichomonas hominis (P. hominis) and Tritrichomonas foetus (T. foetus) are prevalent intestinal protozoa. P. hominis is associated with chronic diarrhea in humans and animals, whereas T. foetus causes gastrointestinal disease in companion animals and reproductive-tract infection in cattle. Rapid and accurate identification of these infections at the point-of-care (POC) is crucial for the diagnosis and effective management of zoonotic diseases. In this study, we developed two novel recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assays coupled with CRISPR/Cas12a detection. The dual-species assa
