Outbreak of herpesviral conjunctivitis and respiratory disease in gouldian finches.

An outbreak of tracheitis, sinusitis, and conjunctivitis, originating in recently imported birds, caused high morbidity and mortality in a flock of finches in Central Illinois. Although several species were present, Gouldian finches (Erythrura [Chloebia] gouldiae) were most commonly and severely affected. Birds submitted for necropsy displayed microscopic lesions characteristic of herpesviral infection, including epithelial cytomegaly and karyomegaly with basophilic, intranuclear inclusion bodies in the nasopharynx, sinuses, trachea, parabronchi, conjunctiva, and occasionally the lacrimal glan

Morbilliviral disease in an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) from the Gulf of Mexico.

A free-living adult female Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) found dead near Panama City, Florida (USA), had necrotizing and ulcerative tracheitis, suppurative and hemorrhagic pneumonia, and necrotizing myocarditis; fungal hyphae were present in these lesions. Additionally, lungs had multifocal proliferative interstitial pneumonia with occasional syncytial cells. Some syncytial cells and type II pneumocytes contained eosinophilic intranuclear or intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies, or both. Based on an immunoperoxidase technique, there was morbilliviral antigen within cytoplasm an

Bacterial laryngotracheitis associated with toxic shock syndrome in an adult.

Nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in adults has been associated with various staphylococcal respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, and postinfluenza respiratory tract infections. In children, nonmenstrual TSS has also been described as a complication of bacterial tracheitis. We describe the case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with laryngotracheitis as well as clinical and laboratory evidence of TSS. Culture of her sputum samples yielded pure growth of Staphylococcus aureus, which was shown to produce TSS toxin 1 (TSST-1). The patient responded

[House-dust mites as vectors of human diseases].

The genuine European house-dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, is the producer of the most common and most potent allergen in the house-dust in Central Europe. Such allergens causing asthma, rhinitis, tracheitis, bronchitis and/or conjunctivitis in man may also be produced by the other species of house-dust mites such as D. farinae and Euroglyphus maynei. House mites and mites of stored products rarely account for such diseases but more frequently for acarodermatitis--especially on farms. Allergies due to house-dust mites mainly occur in midsummer and in early autumn. Particularly child

Experimental inoculation of pigs with porcine parainfluenza virus 1 revealed pathological manifestations in the upper respiratory tract.

Several pathogens are known to affect the respiratory tract of pigs resulting in decreased health and welfare. Porcine parainfluenza virus 1 (PPIV1) and swine orthopneumovirus (SOV) have been identified as novel viruses in pigs. The pathogenicity of PPIV1 has been investigated experimentally by one research group, whereas SOV is yet to be studied. In this experimental trial, two groups of eight pigs were inoculated with a European isolate of PPIV1 or a pool of SOV RNA-positive clinical nasal swab material, and one group of four pigs with culture medium only (negative controls). Nasal swab samp

Did George Washington die of quinsy?

After his second term as first president of the United States, George Washington retired to his Mount Vernon estate in 1796. It was there that he suddenly fell ill and died in December of 1799 after an illness lasting only 21 hours. His problem was first diagnosed as "quinsy" and later modified to "Cynanche trachealis". A review of the signs, symptoms, and clinical course of his fatal illness suggests that the cause of death was most likely an otolaryngologic emergency known as "acute epiglottitis."

Two Case Reports of Interferon-γ Therapy in Patients with Aspergillus Tracheobronchitis Who Developed an Immunocompromised State After Severe Abdominal Sepsis.

BACKGROUND Aspergillus tracheobronchitis is a rare, high mortality condition typically seen in immunocompromised patients. Although commonly associated with classic immunocompromising conditions, such as immunosuppression due to chemotherapy or corticosteroids, or neutropenia, it can also develop in patients with sepsis-induced immunoparalysis, which is the term used to describe an immunocompromised state that results of imbalances in the inflammatory response in sepsis. Immunostimulatory therapy with interferon (IFN)-γ can be a viable treatment option in these cases. CASE REPORT We present 2

Selective targeting of TGF-β activation to treat fibroinflammatory airway disease.

Airway remodeling, caused by inflammation and fibrosis, is a major component of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and currently has no effective treatment. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) has been widely implicated in the pathogenesis of airway remodeling in COPD. TGF-β is expressed in a latent form that requires activation. The integrin αvβ8 (encoded by the itgb8 gene) is a receptor for latent TGF-β and is essential for its activation. Expression of integrin αvβ8 is increased in airway fibroblasts in COPD and thus is an attractive therapeutic target for the treatment of airway

Swollen head syndrome associated with E. coli and infectious bronchitis virus in the Central Valley of California.

A commercial broiler flock in the Central Valley of California experienced a sudden increase in mortality due to heavy culling. Clinical signs included a snick, swollen heads and severe depression. Necropsy and histology revealed tracheitis, rhinitis, facial cellulitis, blepharitis, episcleritis, otitis media and caseous exudate within the air spaces of cranial bones. Escherichia coli serotype O78 was isolated from all lesions. Infectious bronchitis virus (Massachusetts serotype) was isolated from trachea/nasal cavity tissue pool. Adenovirus group 1 was isolated from trachea/nasal cavity and c

The History of Sleep Surgery.

Snoring and the subsequent diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was a life-threatening medical condition with no available treatment until the late 20th century. An early description of OSA was provided by Charles Dickens in his 1836 novel Pickwick Papers with the description of a "fat boy" who was thought to be lazy and always falling asleep but likely displayed hypersomnolence from OSA. It was not until 1976 that Ikematsu first described uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) as an alternative surgical treatment of "snoring," with a reported cure rate of 81%. The only other surgical procedur

Respiratory cryptosporidiosis in a patient with malignant lymphoma. Report of a case and review of the literature.

Respiratory cryptosporidiosis is a rare complication of intestinal infection by cryptosporidia, with only six cases reported (to our knowledge) since its first description in 1983. We report the first case of respiratory cryptosporidiosis recognized at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. An antemortem diagnosis was made based on recognition of acid-fast cryptosporidia in an induced sputum specimen obtained from a 64-year-old woman with malignant lymphoma and an associated profound immunodeficiency. Autopsy confirmed the presence of cryptosporidia along the apical aspect of the res

Infections caused by Chlamydophila pneumoniae.

High affinity to the epithelial lining of the airways makes Chlamydophila pneumoniae a common etiological agent of respiratory tract infections (RTI). It causes among others: pharyngitis, tracheitis, sinusitis, otitis media, bronchitis and bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. It is estimated that Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection is responsible for about 20% of lower respiratory tract infections. Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis and course of bronchial asthma. The recent results indicate that Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection may be a factor responsi

Brain lesions in young broiler chickens naturally infected with a mesogenic strain of Newcastle disease virus.

Thirty-nine 4- to 5-week-old broiler chickens from an outbreak of Newcastle disease (ND) in Japan were examined pathologically. The causative agent was identified as a mesogenic strain of ND virus. Predominant gross lesions included haemorrhage in the lungs, congestion of the trachea, splenomegaly, atrophy of the thymus and bursa of Fabricius, and whitish discolouration of the brain. Microscopically, there was mild haemorrhagic pneumonia, catarrhal tracheitis, lymphoid necrosis in the spleen, thymus, bursa of Fabricius and caecum and diffuse non-suppurative encephalitis. Lesions associated wit

Significance of positive tracheal cultures in the 30 days following tracheostomy.

INTRODUCTION: Positive tracheal cultures obtained after tracheostomy are often considered organ/space surgical site infections by the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project. However, the definition of bacterial tracheitis after tracheostomy is not well described. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship of positive tracheal cultures in the 30 days following pediatric tracheostomy, antibiotic treatment of these cultures, and signs/symptoms of respiratory infection. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on subjects who underwent tracheostomy from November 2012-September 20

Retrospective analysis of colistin-resistant bacteria in a tertiary care centre in India.

The incidence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae has been steadily rising. The morbidity, mortality and financial implications of such patients are significant. We did a retrospective analysis of the case records of 11 patients who had culture report positive for pan drug-resistant (PDR) organisms. There were total 15 isolates of PDR organisms in 11 patients. These were associated with catheter-associated urinary tract infections (7), tracheitis (4), bacteraemia (2), meningitis (1) and soft-tissue infection (1). Average APACHE II score was 23.72 (range 7-36) indicating patients with mu
