BACKGROUND: Minimising perioperative bleeding is a key goal of "patient blood management" programs. One component of respective strategies includes preventive inhibition of fibrinolysis using protease inhibitors, such as tranexamic acid (TXA). TXA inhibits plasminogen activation and plasmin-induced fibrin degradation.
OBJECTIVES: The present article provides an overview of the existing literature and TXA applications in the prophylaxis of perioperative bleeding.
METHODS: Literature search in PubMed/MEDLINE (U.S. National Library of Medicine®, Bethesda, MD, USA).
RESULTS: TXA reduces periope

Tranexamic acid (TXA) allergy is extremely rare. An 80-year-old woman without prior exposure to TXA underwent elective knee replacement. Shortly after induction of anaesthesia and intravenous TXA, she developed hypotension, tachycardia, and facial erythema accompanied by a raised serum tryptase. Later, skin prick and intradermal testing confirmed positive responses to TXA in high dilution and with negative results to the other drugs used. While neuromuscular blocking agents, opiates, and antibiotics remain the most frequent cause of anaphylaxis during anaesthesia, allergy to TXA should always

BACKGROUND: Surgical correction of craniosynostosis in children is associated with substantial intraoperative bleeding. Intraoperatively administered tranexamic acid (TXA) can lessen blood loss during orthopedic and cardiovascular surgery, but its efficacy in craniosynostosis surgery is uncertain. Therefore, a meta-analysis performed with published comparative studies was to determine whether TXA could reduce packed red blood cells (or erythrocytes) (PRBCs) transfused and blood loss during pediatric craniosynostosis surgery.
METHODS: Two PubMed and EMBASE electronic databases were searched un

BACKGROUND: Desmopressin-induced release of tissue plasminogen activator from endothelial cells may explain the absence of its hemostatic effect in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Prior administration of the antifibrinolytic drug tranexamic acid might unmask such an effect, and combination therapy might thereby improve postoperative hemostasis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A double-blinded design randomly allocated 163 adult patients undergoing coronary revascularization, valve replacement, both procedures, or repair of atrial septal defect to four treatment groups: placebo, tranexamic acid give

INTRODUCTION: There is a high incidence of blood transfusion following hip fractures in elderly patients. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has proven efficacy in decreasing blood loss in general trauma patients as well as patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery. A randomised controlled trial will measure the effect of TXA in a population of patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.
METHODS: This is a double-blinded, randomised placebo-controlled trial. Patients admitted through the emergency room that are diagnosed with an intertrochanteric or femoral neck fracture will be eligible for enrolmen

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a proven effective and favored antifibrinolytic hemostatic drug, while epsilon-aminocaproic acid (EACA) has only recently been applied in the field of orthopedics. Few studies compare the efficacy of these two drugs in spinal surgery. We evaluated the hemostatic performance and safety of aminocaproic acid, and explored whether aminocaproic acid can be used as a substitute for TXA during posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) surgery, providing theoretical support for the flexible selection of hemostatic drugs during spinal surgery.
METHODS: We conducted

BACKGROUND: Radical cystectomy is associated with substantial blood loss and transfusion requirements, raising the potential role of tranexamic acid (TXA) to mitigate these risks. However, its effectiveness and safety in this context remain to be fully established.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception to May 19, 2025, identified studies involving adult patients undergoing cystectomy (partial or radical) comparing TXA with placebo, no treatment, or alternative hemostatic agents.
RESULTS: Four studies (1 RCT, 3 cohort studies) with sample

BACKGROUND: Hematoma formation is a possible postoperative occurrence following breast surgery. It might increase the risk of long-term complications and thereby delay start of adjuvant therapy. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is suggested to decrease the risk of postoperative hematoma, but the evidence is based on small and heterogeneous studies. The primary objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to assess the impact of TXA on hematoma formation and secondarily on drain output, time upon drain removal, seroma formation, infection incidents, and thromboembolic events.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault survivors may sustain vaginal trauma that requires intervention in the emergency department, or operating room.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 16-year-old female who was referred to the emergency department for evaluation of continued bleeding from a vaginal laceration following sexual assault 38 h prior. The bleeding limited the medical forensic medical examination, but she was hemodynamically stable. After the application of tranexamic acid (TXA)-soaked gauze, the patient's bleeding was controlled and the wound was able to be evaluated and the examination

BACKGROUND: Papulopustular rosacea (PPR) is a chronic inflammatory disease with a significant impact on facial aesthetics. An impaired skin barrier is an important factor in the development and exacerbation of PPR. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has immune regulatory and anti-inflammatory effects, inhibits angiogenesis and endothelial hyperplasia, and promotes skin barrier repair.
AIMS: We investigated the efficacy and safety of oral TXA for PPR treatment.
PATIENTS/METHODS: In total, 70 patients were randomly assigned to receive traditional therapy plus oral TXA or traditional therapy alone for 8 wee

Craniosynostosis is a congenital condition characterized by the premature closure of one or more sutures in the skull after birth, often necessitating urgent surgical intervention. Nevertheless, cranial vault reconstruction surgery can cause rapid and massive blood loss. This procedure requires a blood transfusion, which entails potential hazards. In addition, the hemostatic system in children differs significantly from that in adults, resulting in increased bleeding during surgical procedures. We conducted a comprehensive literature review in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases,

BACKGROUND: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic agent that reduces bleeding in a multitude of clinical settings from postpartum hemorrhage to trauma. TXA may have clinical effects unrelated to bleeding; plasminogen, the target of TXA, alters immune responses, and TXA appears to decrease the risk of infection in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, as well as joint arthroplasty.
OBJECTIVES: To address whether TXA alters rates of infection and inflammatory outcomes in patients with hematologic malignancies.
METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of outcomes of patients randomized t

Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a synthetic antifibrinolytic agent that has been used for several decades to reduce blood loss during surgery and after trauma. TXA was traditionally used to reduce bleeding in various clinical settings such as menorrhagia, hemophilia, or other bleeding disorder. Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of TXA in reducing blood loss and the need for transfusions. Interest in the potential applications of TXA beyond its traditional use has been growing recently, with studies investigating the use of TXA in postpartum hemorrhage, cardiac surgery, trauma, neurosurg

Post-acne hyperpigmentation is a common undesirable sequela of acne vulgaris that causes distress for many patients. This study's objective was to compare the efficacy of both low-power/low-density fractional carbon dioxide (CO2 ) laser and tranexamic acid (TXA) microinjection on post-acne hyperpigmentation. Twenty-five post-acne hyperpigmentation patients (resistant to regular treatment for more than 6 months) were enrolled in this randomized split-face study. One side of the face was randomly assigned to low-power fractional CO2 laser every 4 weeks, and the other side was assigned to TXA int
