Evaluation of Efficacy of Ultrasonography in the Assessment of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation in Subjects with Myositis and Myofascial Pain.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to determine if ultrasonography of masseter can be used to evaluate the outcome of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) such as myositis and myofascial pain. METHODS: Fifteen TMD subjects with myofascial pain/myositis who satisfied the RDC/McNeil criteria were included in the study. All the subjects were administered TENS therapy for a period of 6 days (30 minutes per session). The mouth opening (in millimeters) and severity of pain (visual analogue scale score) and ultrasonographic thickness of the

Electrophysiological and clinical evaluation of the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on the spasticity in the hemiplegic stroke patients.

To investigate whether transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) mitigates the spasticity of hemiplegic stroke patients, as assessed by electrophysiological variables, and the effects, if any, on the clinical appearance of spasticity. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-seven subjects who had acute hemiplegia and 24 healthy people as the control group, were enrolled in this study. Some of the acute cerebrovascular disease patients could walk. Subjects who did not have spasticity, who were taking antispasticity medicine, or had a previous episode of cerebrovascular disease were excluded. The

Neuralgia associated with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy in a patient initially diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder.

Head and neck neoplasms may be difficult to detect because of wide-ranging symptoms and the presence of overlapping anatomic structures in the region. This case report describes a patient with chronic otalgia and temporomandibular disorder, who developed sudden-onset neuralgia while receiving transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. Further diagnostic evaluation revealed a skull base tumor consistent with adenoid cystic carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of TENS-associated neuralgia leading to a diagnosis of primary intracranial adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on motion sickness induced by rotary chair: a crossover study.

OBJECTIVES: Motion sickness (MS) is evoked by the conflict among somatosensory, visual, and vestibular input. Some of the MS symptoms and signs are mediated by activation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), a maneuver used for pain control, was found to influence cardiovascular responses through ANS reflex, and to enhance motor function, visuospatial abilities, postural control, and cognitive function. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of TENS on MS. SUBJECTS AND DESIGN: Fifteen (15) healthy young men particip

Pseudoatrial flutter: artifact simulating atrial flutter caused by a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS).

A patient with previous actual atrial flutter had what appeared to be atrial flutter seen on Holter monitoring during treatment with a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit. This proved to be artifact caused by the unit rather than a true arrhythmia. The artifact was reproduced in a normal volunteer by application of a TENS unit.

Stretch reflex latencies in spastic hemiparetic subjects are prolonged after transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Low-intensity repetitive electrical stimulation such as dorsal column and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) reportedly decreases spasticity and improves voluntary motor control. However, the mechanisms mediating these effects are unclear. Recent findings suggest that spasticity may be characterized more appropriately by a decrease in the stretch reflex threshold than by an increase in gain. Our objectives were: (1) to examine possible changes in stretch reflex excitability following 45 min of TENS, (2) to map out the time course of possible post-stimulation effects via both la

An update comprehensive review on the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for postnatal physical and psychological disorders.

Postnatal rehabilitation is crucial to women's physical and mental health, not only to the quality of life of the mother herself, but also to the well-being of the whole family. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) has been gradually attracting attention as an emerging means of postnatal rehabilitation. We summarized the current evidence related to this topic by a comprehensive review. Relevant studies demonstrated that TENS is effective for treating postnatal rehabilitation. TENS showed a good analgesia without any severe adverse effects with a frequency of 100 Hz with a pulse d

Changes in Neuropathic Pain Profiles by Dysesthesia-Matched Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation: A Case Report.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is widely used to treat neuropathic pain because of its safety, but its therapeutic efficacy is limited. Dysesthesia-matched TENS (DM-TENS) is an innovative intervention that synchronizes TENS parameters with an individual patient's perception of dysesthesia. This case report describes a patient with cervical spinal stenosis whose throbbing pain evolved into dysesthesia. DM-TENS was synchronized with each neuropathic pain profile. Initially, the patient's throbbing pain was rated 8 on a numerical rating scale (NRS), and the pinch force adjustm
