Surgical management of benign prostate hyperplasia in Nigeria: open prostatectomy versus transurethral resection of the prostate.

INTRODUCTION: transvesical (open) prostatectomy (OP), an invasive surgical procedure, is a common form of treatment offered to patients with benign prostatic enlargement in emerging economies. Recently, there has been an increase in the use of electrosurgical means in treating benign prostate hyperplasia in our environment, especially transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). This study compares the perioperative, short-term outcomes and complications of open prostatectomy and TURP. METHODS: the records of men who had prostatectomies (OP and TURP) from Jan 2016 to Dec 2019 for prostate

Contemporary outcomes of palliative transurethral resection of the prostate in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Advanced prostate cancer may cause significant local complications which affect quality of life, including bladder outlet obstruction and hematuria. We performed a detailed review of our outcomes of palliative transurethral resection of the prostate (pTURP) in the era of taxane chemotherapy and potent androgen receptor antagonists at our tertiary-care institution. METHODS: Using hospital coding data, we identified patients with a diagnosis of prostate cancer who underwent a TURP at Hotel-Dieu Hospital in Quebec City between 2006 and 2016 for detailed chart review. Co-morbidities w

Blood loss during and after transurethral resection of prostate: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) is the gold standard treatment for symptomatic prostatic bladder outlet obstruction. Haemorrhage during and after TURP can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of anaesthesia, operating time, weight of resected prostatic tissue and its histology on blood loss during and after TURP and to revisit the available body of evidence in the literature of urology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective study of a cohort of 100 consecutive patients who had undergone TURP over a per

Transient blindness following transurethral resection of the prostate in an achondroplastic dwarf.

Neurological complications associated with transurethral resection of the prostate have been reported in the past. We report on an achondroplastic dwarf who suffered transient blindness following transurethral resection of the prostate. The blindness correlated with a markedly elevated serum glycine level of 13,734 mumol. per l. We discuss the possibility of glycine being responsible for this complication.

A 27-Year Experience With Day Surgery Transurethral Resection of the Prostate.

Introduction Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the standard surgical procedure for obstructive symptoms of the lower urinary tract when medical management fails. Progression in TURP procedures has led to reduced catheterization time following transurethral prostatic resection. This study describes the methods and results of TURP performed in the day surgery setting. Materials and methods This retrospective study was performed at a day surgical hospital serving a patient population of more than 200,000 people. Over a 27-year period, a total of 1,123 patients with a mean age of 7

Risk factors for bladder neck contracture after transurethral resection of the prostate.

INTRODUCTION: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the most frequently used treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia with a prostate volume of <80 mL. A long-term complication is bladder neck contracture (BNC). The aim of the present study was to identify the risk factors for BNC formation after TURP. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all TURP primary procedures which were performed at one academic institution between 2013 and 2018. All patients were analyzed and compared with regard to postoperative formation of a BNC requiring further therapy. Uni- and multivari

Facklamia hominis bacteremia after transurethral resection of the prostate: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) is one of the most frequent routine procedures in urology. Because of the semisterile environment, postoperative infections, including sepsis, are a common complication, with Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis or Enterococcus faecalis as frequently isolated pathogens. Facklamia hominis is a gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, alpha-hemolytic, catalase-negative coccus that was first described in 1997. To date, only a few cases of infectious complications have been described. We report the first case of postoperati

[Autologous blood transfusion aided with erythropoietin in transurethral resection of the prostate].

Erythropoietin (EPO) with an established clinical efficacy in renal anemia has in recent years become applied as an aid to autologous blood transfusion in surgical patients. This report describes our experience with autotransfusion along with the use of EPO in transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P), indicating its usefulness. Ten patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy aged 60 to 74 years received 3000 units of EPO, with an iron preparation, nine times beginning 3 weeks prior to operation. Autologous blood of 300 ml was collected from the patient each at 2 and 1 week before operati

Necrotising prostatic granulomas following transurethral resection--a case report.

Necrotising post surgical granulomatous prostatitis following transurethral resection of the prostate is a poorly recognized entity. It is often mistaken for other conditions like tuberculosis, allergic granulomatous prostatitis, etc. This case is being reported in order to increase the awareness of this condition. The relevant literature has also been reviewed.
