Effects of stimulus frequency and intensity on c-fos mRNA expression in the adult rat auditory brainstem.

Induction of the cellular fos gene (c-fos) is one of the earliest transcriptional changes observed following neuronal excitation. Although not an activity marker in the strict electrophysiological sense, many neurons in the central nervous system increase their c-fos expression after periods of sustained stimulation at physiological levels of intensity. In the present study, induction of c-fos mRNA expression was examined in the auditory brainstem after 1 hour of continuous free-field acoustic stimulation. Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to pure tones of 2, 8, 16, or 32 kHz or half-octave noi

Auditory neuronal sizes after a unilateral conductive hearing loss.

The left external auditory meatus was removed in 4-day-old CBA/J mice; after killing at 45 days, serial sections of the cochleae and brain stem were prepared. From these, the cross-sectional areas of spiral ganglion neurons and of 14 auditory brain stem neuronal types were measured, using a total of 210 neurons of each of the 15 types from both the right and left sides. Nine neuronal types were significantly smaller (P less than 0.01) on the left side: spiral ganglion neurons; globular, small spherical, large spherical, octopus, multipolar, and granule cells of the ventral cochlear nucleus; Pu

Body surface area predicts plasma oxaliplatin and pharmacokinetic advantage in hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is used to treat peritoneal surface-spreading malignancies to maximize local drug concentrations while minimizing systemic effects. The pharmacokinetic advantage of HIPEC is defined as the intraperitoneal to intravascular ratio of drug concentrations. We hypothesized that body surface area (BSA) would correlate with the pharmacokinetic advantage of HIPEC. Because oxaliplatin is administered in 5 % dextrose, we hypothesized that BSA would correlate with glycemia. METHODS: We collected blood and peritoneal perfusate sa

[Loose anagen hair syndrome].

In 1984, Zaun described a new type of pilary dysplasia characterized by easily pluckable hair. We were able to observe three patients with this anomaly, and this paper is an attempt at reviewing the subject on the basis of these new cases compared with those previously published. Clinical features. The major sign of the anomaly is that hairs can be pulled off in tufts easily and painlessly, and promptly grow again (our cases). In all cases reported so far the hair was blond or dark-blond; in some patients it is described as scintillating (our cases). The hair shaft is usually thin (one of our

The interaural time difference pathway: a comparison of spectral bandwidth and correlation sensitivity at three anatomical levels.

Temporal differences between the two ears are critical for spatial hearing. They can be described along axes of interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural correlation, and their processing starts in the brainstem with the convergence of monaural pathways which are tuned in frequency and which carry temporal information. In previous studies, we examined the bandwidth (BW) of frequency tuning at two stages: the auditory nerve (AN) and inferior colliculus (IC), and showed that BW depends on characteristic frequency (CF) but that there is no difference in the mean BW of these two structures w

Effects of brainstem lesions on amino acid levels in the rat cochlear nucleus.

There is evidence for glutamate, γ-amino butyric acid (GABA), and glycine as neurotransmitters of centrifugal pathways to the cochlear nucleus, but the quantitative extent of their contributions to amino acid neurotransmission in cochlear nucleus regions has not been known. We used microdissection of freeze-dried tissue sections of rat cochlear nucleus, with mapping of sample locations, combined with a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay, to measure amino acid levels in cochlear nucleus subregions of rats with unilateral lesions of centrifugal pathways to the cochlear nucleus.

The effects of the leaf water extract of Struchium sparganophora (Linn.) Ktze asteraceae on the hematopoietic parameters and the organ system of rats.

Struchium sparganophora, (Linn.) Asteraceae is a culinary herb consumed in the western part of Nigeria and it is known to have a nutritive value. This study was carried out to assess its' effects on the hematopoietic parameters and its toxicity on the organ system of Wistar rats. The animals were randomly divided to five (5) groups. The group 1 (control) received distilled water equivalent to the volume of extract administered while groups, 2, 3, 4 and 5 received the aqueous extract of 0.2g, 0.4g, 0.8g and 1.6g/kg body weight orally respectively for 4 weeks. The rats were anaesthesized with ch

Functional refinement in the projection from ventral cochlear nucleus to lateral superior olive precedes hearing onset in rat.

Principal neurons of the lateral superior olive (LSO) compute the interaural intensity differences necessary for localizing high-frequency sounds. To perform this computation, the LSO requires precisely tuned, converging excitatory and inhibitory inputs that are driven by the two ears and that are matched for stimulus frequency. In rodents, the inhibitory inputs, which arise from the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB), undergo extensive functional refinement during the first postnatal week. Similar functional refinement of the ascending excitatory pathway, which arises in the anterove

Cochlear ablation effects on amino acid levels in the chinchilla cochlear nucleus.

Inner ear damage can lead to hearing disorders, including tinnitus, hyperacusis, and hearing loss. We measured the effects of severe inner ear damage, produced by cochlear ablation, on the levels and distributions of amino acids in the first brain center of the auditory system, the cochlear nucleus. Measurements were also made for its projection pathways and the superior olivary nuclei. Cochlear ablation produces complete degeneration of the auditory nerve, which provides a baseline for interpreting the effects of partial damage to the inner ear, such as that from ototoxic drugs or intense sou

A developmental shift from GABAergic to glycinergic transmission in the central auditory system.

GABAergic and glycinergic circuits are found throughout the auditory brainstem, and it is generally assumed that transmitter phenotype is established early in development. The present study documents a profound transition from GABAergic to glycinergic transmission in the gerbil lateral superior olive (LSO) during the first 2 postnatal weeks. Whole-cell voltage-clamp recordings were obtained from LSO neurons in a brain slice preparation, and IPSCs were evoked by electrical stimulation of the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB), a known glycinergic projection in adult animals. GABAergic

A physiological study of acoustic blinking reflex in the cat.

Blinking reflex was elicited by acoustic stimulus to investigate the reflex pathway in the encéphalo isolé cat. Reflex responses were recorded using electromyography (EMG) of the orbicularis oculi. The investigation was as follows: After stimulation by a loud click sound, the EMGs of the orbicularis oculi were elicited bilaterally. Latencies were 17-20 msec on the ipsilateral side, and 19-21 msec on the contralateral side. By electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerve in the cochlea and the acoustic nerve EMGs were also obtained. The latencies of the electrical stimulation responses correl

Different discrete motor-unit activation patterns in the flexor carpi radialis in boys and men.

BACKGROUND: Lower activation of higher threshold (type-II) motor units (MUs) has been suggested in children compared with adults. We examined child-adult differences in discrete MU activation of the flexor carpi radialis (FCR). METHODS: Fifteen boys (10.2 ± 1.4 years), and 17 men (25.0 ± 2.7 years) completed 2 laboratory sessions. Following a habituation session, maximal voluntary isometric wrist flexion torque (MVIC) was determined before completing trapezoidal isometric contractions at 70%MVIC. Surface electromyography was captured by Delsys Trigno Galileo sensors and decomposed into indivi

Study of the olivocochlear neurons using two different tracers, fast blue and cholera toxin, in hypothyroid rats.

Congenital hypothyroidism results in deafness that is caused by changes in the auditory receptor, including scanty development of the outer hair cells and a lack of synaptogenesis between these cells and the efferent system. although the afferent population is present. The normal efferent innervation of the cochlea originates in the superior olivary complex, arising from efferent neurons belonging to the lateral or to the medial olivocochlear system. In the rat, the former is constituted by neurons located in the lateral superior olivary nucleus, that project to the inner hair cells, while the

Cellular localization of messenger RNA for beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptors in rat brain: an in situ hybridization study.

Selective, 35S-labeled, oligonucleotide probes were designed from sequences of the rat beta-1 and beta-2 adrenoceptor messenger RNAs for use in situ hybridization experiments on sections of unfixed rat brain and spinal cord. After hybridized sections were exposed to film or dipped in autoradiographic emulsion, specific and selective labeling patterns characteristic for each receptor messenger RNA and region of the central nervous system were observed. For example, labeling for beta-1 messenger RNA was found in the anterior olfactory nucleus, cerebral cortex, lateral intermediate septal nucleus

Remodelling at the calyx of Held-MNTB synapse in mice developing with unilateral conductive hearing loss.

Structure and function of central synapses are profoundly influenced by experience during developmental sensitive periods. Sensory synapses, which are the indispensable interface for the developing brain to interact with its environment, are particularly plastic. In the auditory system, moderate forms of unilateral hearing loss during development are prevalent but the pre- and postsynaptic modifications that occur when hearing symmetry is perturbed are not well understood. We investigated this issue by performing experiments at the large calyx of Held synapse. Principal neurons of the medial n

Assessment of auditory pathway microstructure in vestibular schwannoma patients: a quantitative diffusion tensor tractography study.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are cerebellopontine angle tumors that can result in cranial nerve dysfunction, most commonly sensorineural hearing loss. Conventional structural MRI is unable to provide correlative information on cranial nerve function. In this study, the authors used multitensor tractography to study the white matter microstructural properties of the auditory neural pathway as a correlate of cranial nerve function in a cohort of VS patients. They evaluated the relationship between the auditory neural pathway microstructural properties using pure-tone audiometry (PTA)

Vasopressin release by nicotine: the site of action.

1. In cats anaesthetized with chloralose the release of neurohypophysial hormones was examined after injection of nicotine into the cerebral ventricles or cisterna magna or its topical application through perspex rings to the ventral surface of the brain stem. The release was measured by assaying the hormones in samples of venous blood. 2. Injected into a lateral or the third cerebral ventricle, nicotine (0.5 to 1 mg) produced release of vasopressin without oxytocin. When the aqueduct was cannulated, preventing access to the fourth ventricle and to the subarachnoid space, this release did not

The "Chiang Mai Lean Forward" Radiographic View for Acromioclavicular Joint Injuries: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Operative treatment is suggested for unstable type 3 acromioclavicular (AC) joint injuries; however, there is no clear consensus regarding the definition of an unstable type 3 injury. We propose a new radiographic method, the "Chiang Mai lean forward" view, to verify horizontal displacement in an unstable AC joint injury. HYPOTHESIS: A radiograph taken with the torso leaning forward would allow the detection of a higher proportion of AC joint injuries. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: A total of 20 shoulders from 10 fresh whole-body cadaveric specimens (mean
