When do traumatic experiences alter risk-taking behavior? A machine learning analysis of reports from refugees.

Exposure to traumatic stressors and subsequent trauma-related mental changes may alter a person's risk-taking behavior. It is unclear whether this relationship depends on the specific types of traumatic experiences. Moreover, the association has never been tested in displaced individuals with substantial levels of traumatic experiences. The present study assessed risk-taking behavior in 56 displaced individuals by means of the balloon analogue risk task (BART). Exposure to traumatic events, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression were assessed by means of semi-structured inter

Effect of transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation on the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) response to stress: A randomized, sham controlled, double blind pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) is a neuropeptide that plays a key role in the neurobiology of the stress response, and prior studies suggest that its function is dysregulated in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) acts through PACAP and other neurobiological systems to modulate stress responses and/or symptoms of PTSD. In this pilot study, we examined the effects of tcVNS on PACAP in a three day chronic stress laboratory paradigm involving serial traumatic and mental stress exposures in healthy indiv

Pharmacotherapy of adjustment disorder: A review.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorder has been reconceptualized as a trauma- and stressor-related condition, and there is a growing understanding of the psychobiology of stress responses. Against this context it is timely to review of the pharmacotherapy of adjustment disorder. METHODS: A comprehensive electronic database (Pubmed) was searched for randomised controlled trials of the pharmacotherapy of adjustment disorder. Data from each trial were extracted and collated. RESULTS: To date there have been relatively few controlled trials in this area. Comparator trials provide limited support for a

Anxiety sensitivity and intolerance of uncertainty track distinct neurobehavioral dimensions of avoidance in anxiety-related disorders.

Avoidance behavior is a prominent and impairing feature of anxiety disorders, trauma- and stressor-related disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. A transdiagnostic approach to identifying the neural basis of avoidance is a promising avenue to shed light on the heterogeneity among individuals affected by these conditions, collectively termed anxiety-related disorders (ARDs). In this cross-sectional study, 58 adults with ARDs and 77 healthy comparisons (HC) completed self-report measures of anxiety sensitivity (i.e., "fear of fear") and intolerance of uncertainty (i.e., "fear of the unkno

Peripartum Traumas and Mental Health Outcomes in a Low-Income Sample of NICU Mothers: A Call for Family-Centered, Trauma-Informed Care.

Postpartum depression (PPD), postpartum anxiety (PPA), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among birthing people have increased substantially, contributing to adverse maternal/infant dyad outcomes, with a high prevalence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Despite calls for trauma-informed care in the NICU and high rates of post-traumatic stress, little research has examined the rates of or the relationships between peripartum mood and adverse child experiences (ACEs) in NICU mothers or evaluated which peripartum traumas are most distressing. This study employed structural equati

Residential PTSD treatment for female veterans with military sexual trauma: does a history of childhood sexual abuse influence outcome?

This study examined whether a history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) influenced treatment outcome among female veterans with an index trauma of military sexual trauma (MST) receiving residential treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One hundred and ten female veterans, 61 with a history of CSA and 49 without, were compared on pre-treatment demographic and symptom measures, as well as treatment outcome, which were assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), PTSD Checklist-Stressor Specific Version (PCL-S), and Depression Inventory-Second edition (BDI-II). Lifetime Trauma and Cardiometabolic Risk in Sexual Minority Women.

Background: Sexual minority women (SMW; such as lesbian, bisexual, and mostly lesbian) exhibit excess cardiometabolic risk, yet factors that contribute to cardiometabolic risk in this population are poorly understood. Trauma exposure has been posited as a contributor to cardiometabolic risk in SMW. Materials and Methods: An analysis of data from Wave 3 of the Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women Study was conducted. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine correlates of trauma. Next, multiple logistic regression was used to examine the associations of different forms of trau

Unveiling the Complex Interplay: Sudden Emergence of First-Rank Schneiderian Symptoms Following TMS in a Patient With Severe Depression and Complex Trauma.

Schizophrenia-spectrum disorders are characterized by psychotic symptoms, including hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. Schneider's first-rank symptoms (FRS)-including thought broadcasting and experiences of external control-are clinically salient but not ergonomic and require careful differential diagnosis. The emergence of new-onset psychosis in midlife, particularly in individuals without prior psychotic history, warrants a broad biopsychosocial evaluation. We present the case of a 47-year-old male with chronic major depressive disorder and complex developmental trauma who

The association between mental health disorders and allergic reactions: a multicenter retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders and allergies are highly prevalent and are increasingly recognized as interconnected. This study aimed to characterize the association between psychiatric diagnosis and allergies by investigating correlations between a wide range of psychiatric diagnostic categories and the documentation of allergies to different types of allergens. METHODS: This was an IRB-approved, multi-center, retrospective analysis of patients aged 18-90 years old admitted to seven hospital sites across a large health system between October 1st, 2023, and September 30th, 2024. Association between parental separation, childhood trauma, neuroticism, and depression: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Parental separation has been suggested to be associated with depression development in offspring. The new family constellation subsequent to separation could be associated with elevated scores of childhood trauma, shaping more emotionally instable personalities. This could ultimately be a risk factor for mood disorders and particularly the development of depression in life. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we investigated the associations between parental separation, childhood trauma (CTQ) and personality (NEO-FFI) in a sample of N = 119 patients diagnosed with depression and N =

Qualitative Research on Psilocybin-Assisted Psychotherapy for the Treatment of Mental Disorders: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) may be an effective intervention for a range of mental disorders. However, there appears to be a relative lack of qualitative evidence to complement emerging quantitative findings. To our knowledge, no reviews have systematically mapped the literature on qualitative studies on PAP for the treatment of mental disorders with the intent to identify opportunities for future research. AIMS: To assess the scope of qualitative research on PAP for mental disorders, identify research trends, and highlight future opportunities. METHODS: We conducted

Safety fears and relocation stressors related to flawed buildings: Ireland's defective concrete crisis.

The use of defective concrete in the construction of buildings in Ireland has led to widespread property deterioration, displacement, financial loss, and psychological distress for thousands of families. No research to date has examined mental health outcomes or associated risk factors among affected individuals. This study aimed to generate estimates of probable major depressive disorder (MDD), probable generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), probable complex PTSD (CPTSD), and suicidal ideation in a sample of this population and to identify crisis-re

Adjustment disorder diagnosis: Improving clinical utility.

OBJECTIVES: Adjustment disorder (AD) is a frequent diagnosis in clinical practice worldwide. After long neglect in mental health research, the new DSM definition and in particular the ICD-11 model of AD is about to create a fresh impulse for research on AD and for refined clinical use of the diagnosis. METHODS: This paper outlines the clinical features of AD according to the ICD-10, ICD-11 and DSM-5 definitions, and provides case vignettes of patients with AD with clinical presentations of dominating anxiety, depressed mood or mixed symptom presentations. The available clinical assessments an

Invited Commentary: Reckoning With the Relationship Between Stressors and Suicide Attempts in a Time of COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic presents a unique set of risk exposures for populations, which might lead to an increase in suicide. While large-scale traumatic events are known to increase psychological disorders, thus far the science has not shown a clear link between these events and suicide. In this issue of the Journal, Elbogen et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2020;189(11):1266-1274) used representative data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) to show that 4 dimensions of financial strain-financial debt/crisis, unemployment, past homel

Response of hostile individuals to stressful changes in their working lives: test of a psychosocial vulnerability model.

BACKGROUND: According to the psychosocial vulnerability model, the health of hostile individuals is at greater risk than that of non-hostile individuals, due partly to lesser ability of the former to cope with psychosocial stress situations. We examined whether hostile individuals were more vulnerable than others to health problems when faced with stressful changes in their working lives. METHODS: Hostility, sickness absence and psychosocial stressors in 866 local government employees over a 5-year period, which included severe economic decline, were investigated. Hostility was measured by a

Examining various subthreshold definitions of PTSD using the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5.

BACKGROUND: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) includes Other- and Unspecified- Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders to capture subthreshold Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, the DSM-5 does not specify the number or type of symptoms needed to assign them. The purpose of the current study was to extend our understanding of subthreshold PTSD by comparing four commonly used definitions adapted to the DSM-5 PTSD criteria in an outpatient treatment-seeking sample. METHODS: Veterans (N

Neural reactivity to a racial trauma cue in an African American woman with alcohol use disorder and PTSD: Case report.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common co-occurring diagnoses that disproportionately affect racial minorities and women. Black/African American women are more likely to experience racial trauma, which compounds AUD+PTSD comorbidity. Limited research has investigated the effect of racial trauma on AUD+PTSD using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used a novel script-driven imagery procedure during MRI for racial trauma in a 26-year-old, self-identifying Black woman enrolled in a 12-week randomized clinical trial for individuals with AUD+PTS

A Pilot Randomized Control Trial of the Striving Towards EmPowerment and Medication Adherence (STEP-AD) Intervention for Black Women Living with HIV.

Black women living with HIV (BWLWH) face adversities associated with lower HIV medication adherence, viral non-suppression, and mental health symptoms (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder) such as trauma/violence, racism, HIV-related discrimination/stigma, and gender-related stressors. We developed the first intervention based in cognitive behavioral therapy and culturally congruent coping for BWLWH to increase medication adherence and decrease PTSD symptoms by enhancing resilience, self-care, engagement in care, and coping for trauma, racism, HIV-related discrimination/stigma, and gender-rel

Traumatic stressors and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in headache patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of significant traumatic stressors and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in a headache population. BACKGROUND: Several recent publications have emphasized the relationship between life stressors and/or daily hassles and recurrent headaches. However, little is known about the prevalence and impact of major traumatic stressors in patients with recurrent headaches. METHODS: Eighty patients with either migraine or tension-type headache completed a PTSD checklist. Data were compared with those from patients with chronic ma
