Trichuriasis in Human Patients from Côte d'Ivoire Caused by Novel Trichuris incognita Species with Low Sensitivity to Albendazole/Ivermectin Combination Treatment.

Albendazole/ivermectin combination therapy is a promising alternative to benzimidazole monotherapy alone for Trichuris trichiura control. We used fecal DNA metabarcoding to genetically characterize Trichuris spp. populations in patient samples from Côte d'Ivoire showing lower (egg reduction rate <70%) albendazole/ivermectin sensitivity than those from Laos and Tanzania (egg reduction rates >98%). Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 and ITS2 metabarcoding revealed the entire detected Côte d'Ivoire Trichuris population was phylogenetically distinct from T. trichiura found in Laos and Tanzania an

A Honduran Prevalence Study on Soil-Transmitted Helminths Highlights Serological Antibodies to Tm-WAP49 as a Diagnostic Marker for Exposure to Human Trichuriasis.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections rank among the most prevalent communicable diseases of humans, yet detection of these parasites is mostly restricted to identifying active infection through fecal examinations. Currently, there are no commercial diagnostic tools to identify a prior whipworm or hookworm exposure, and the few serological assays for roundworm infection have not been well validated for crossreactivity or infections in humans. Such diagnostic restrictions limit the range of scientific and clinical questions that surround STH exposures and their implicated relationship to c

[1st clinical therapeutic trial of mebendazole in some cases of helmenthiasis in Cuba].

Due to the difficulties faced in the etiologic approach of trichuriasis as a result of the intolerance, reduced efficacy and toxicity of some drugs a clinical-therapeutic trial of mebendazole was started in 5-64 year-old patients with some form of helmynthiasis as trichuriasis, enterobiasis or necatoriasis. Coproparasitological examinations carried out 15, 30 and 45 days after the ingestion of the drug depicted an excellent cure rate (98% in trichuriasis; 100% in enterobiasis; and 85% in necatoriasis). Very few side-effects were found. This is the first clinical-therapeutic trial of mebendazol

Clinical trials of broad spectrum anthelmintics against soil-transmitted helminthiasis.

Clinical trials on the three broad spectrum anthelmintics against trichuriasis, ascariasis and hookworm infection were carried out in a rural community in Irosin, Sorsogon. Flubendazole (Fluvermal) appears to be a promising drug against trichuriasis particularly when periodic mass treatment of a community is carried out. Mebendazole (Antiox) also appears to be promising given as single dose during mass treatment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. As shown in previous studies, oxantel-pyrantel (Quantrel) should be given at 15 mg/kg body weight at 12-hour intervals or 20 mg/kg body weight single

An unpleasant souvenir: Endoscopic finding of Trichuris trichiura (Nematoda: Trichuridae).

Whipworms are responsible for up to 500 million cases of trichuriasis worldwide, with higher endemicity in tropical and sub-tropical countries. In non-endemic countries, trichuriasis can be accidentally diagnosed upon colonoscopy, often in the presence of negative microscopy. Here, we describe an incidental diagnosis of trichuriasis in an HIV patient residing in a non-endemic area (i.e., Turin, Italy), six months after his return from Antigua. The species-level diagnosis was made thanks to PCR-based molecular identification of Trichuris sp. following optical microscopy detection. Overall, this

[The clinico-parasitological examination of a focus of intestinal nematodiases in Ha-Shon-Bin Province in the People's Republic of Vietnam and an analysis of 5 medamine treatment schemes].

An intensive focus of intestinal nematodiases in a foothill province of Vietnam is described; the incidence of ascaridiasis there was found to be 81.8%, trichuriasis 78.1%, and ankylostomiasis 12.3%. Polyinvasions were detected in more than 80% of the examinees. Analysis of five schemes of medamin therapy, used in three provinces in 595 patients with ascaridiasis, 490 ones with trichuriasis, and 323 ones with ankylostomiasis has shown that the treatment efficacy was reducing with the invasion intensity augmentation. In ascariasis the 3- and 5-day therapeutic schemes were the most effective, th

Oxantel-pyrantel in various regimens for the treatment of soil transmitted helminthiasis in rural and urban communities.

204 individuals from a rural community were given a single dose of oxantel-pyrantel at 15mg/kg bodyweight and if still infected, 20mg/kg bodyweight, with cure rates of 100%, 53% and 71% for ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infection, respectively. From an urban community, 124 patients were given the same drug either as 15mg/kg bodyweight given twice in one day, with an interval of about 12 hours, or 20mg/kg bodyweight given daily for 2 days. Cure rates obtained were 100% in both groups for ascariasis; 89.2% of those given the first regimen were cured of trichuriasis compared with 71.2% of

Molecular diagnosis of Trichuris trichiura: Prevalence and associated risk factors in children under five living in a malaria-endemic area in Papua, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Trichuris trichiura, a soil-transmitted helminth (STH), infection is highly prevalent in children and, if not treated, can cause adverse health consequences. Microscopy using the Kato-Katz method is the mainstay of STH diagnosis in most settings but has low sensitivity. This study aims to quantify prevalence and examine risk factors of trichuriasis among children in a malaria-endemic area. METHODS: The study recruited 181 children aged <5 years old from a household survey conducted in 16 villages in Timika, Papua, Indonesia, from April to July 2013. Clinical and laboratory data we

Fecal occult blood testing on Trichuris-infected primary school children in northeastern peninsular Malaysia.

Stool specimens of 104 primary schoolchildren (mean+/-SD age = 8.2+/-0.3 years) were examined for helminth eggs and for occult blood to investigate the possibility that trichuriasis causes occult intestinal bleeding in the absence of the overt Trichuris dysentery syndrome. A commercially available guaiac test was used to detect fecal occult blood. Sixty-one children had Trichuris infection, 11 of whom had heavy infections (> 10,000 eggs per gram of feces [epg]), and 53 had Ascaris infections. No hookworm infection was detected. Baseline screening yielded only one weakly positive occult blood t

A comparative trial of oxantel-pyrantel and mebendazole in multiple helminth infection in school children.

In a pilot study in 17 children, oxantel-pyrantel as one single dose of 10 to 20mg/kg of each, gave good results in ascariasis but poor cure rates in both trichuriasis and necatoriasis. However in the latter groups the infection was extremely heavy. In a controlled trial in 51 children, using oxantel-pyrantel at the same dose, but given daily for 3 consecutive days, or mebendazole 100mg twice daily for 3 days, the drugs gave similar response rates. Both gave 100% cure rates, as assessed by the absence of ova by both Beaver and brine-flotation techniques, in Ascaris lumbricoides infection. The

[The treatment of intestinal helminthiasis with mebendazole. 294 treated patients].

294 patients with slight intestinal helminthic infections have been treated with mebendazole, a broad-spectrum antihelminthic of high effectiveness and remarkably low toxicity. The high cure rates (91-95%) obtained in cases of trichuriasis, ascariasis and ankylostomiasis are in agreement with the results as published by other investigators. For helminthiases, the present patient sample was too limited to permit accurate evaluation. Nevertheless, mebendazole may be considered the drug of choice for treatment of trichuriasis in particular and for intestinal helminthic polyparasitism in general.

Intestinal parasitic infestation among different population groups of Andaman and Nicobar islands.

A survey was carried out among the rural and urban settlers and two tribal groups viz. Nicobarese and Onges, of Andaman and Nicobar islands. The survey covered preschool school aged children and adults. Out of the total 1,384 stool samples examined, 652 (47.1%) showed ova or cysts of one or more intestinal parasites. Among the preschool children, Nicobarese showed the highest overall prevalence rate (80.5%) followed by urban (46.7%) and rural (38.6%) preschool children. Ascaris lumbricoides was the commonest form of parasite encountered in all the groups of preschool children, followed by Tric

Whip-LAMP: a novel LAMP assay for the detection of Trichuris muris-derived DNA in stool and urine samples in a murine experimental infection model.

BACKGROUND: Trichuris trichiura (human whipworm) infects an estimated 477 million individuals worldwide. In addition to T. trichiura, other Trichuris species can cause an uncommon zoonosis and a number of human cases have been reported. The diagnosis of trichuriasis has relied traditionally on microscopy. Recently, there is an effort to use molecular diagnostic methods, mainly qPCR. LAMP technology could be an alternative for qPCR especially in low-income endemic areas. Trichuris muris, the causative agent of trichuriasis in mice, is of great importance as a model for human trichuriasis. Here,

Descriptive Epidemiology of Soil-Transmitted Helminth Infections in the United States: Using Big Data to Characterize Patients and Analyze Parasitic Disease Trends.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) include species responsible for hookworm disease, ascariasis, and trichuriasis. In the United States, STH infections have been greatly reduced with anthelmintic medications and improved hygiene and sanitation, however, cases still regularly occur, but limited epidemiological data exist. We investigated the occurrence of STH infections using big-data analytics of inpatient medical discharge records (1998-2020). Data were obtained from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project National Inpatient Sample. We developed an algorithm to extract International Classif

Albendazole in the treatment of goehelminth infections in children.

Children with mixed helminthic infections between the ages of 2 and 14 years, from a slum area, were treated with two regimes of albendazole. A majority of children had moderate to heavy infections with Trichuris trichiura (greater than 70%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (greater than 84%). Children treated with a single 400 mg dose of albendazole showed a very good response in ascariasis with 100% cure rate irrespective of the severity of infection. In Trichuriasis (n = 40), a cure rate of 50% was observed in mild infections, but only a reduction in the egg counts of 60% and 57% respectively were
