In order to study the toxic and mutagenic effects of low-dose-rate exposure to ionizing radiation, human lymphoblast cells were grown continuously in tritiated water (3H2O) for up to 8 days. Dose rates ranged from 0.0054 to 0.064 rad/min. The treatment of herpetic corneal ulcerations with trifluorthymidine (F3T) has been evaluated in a clinical trial. F3T was found to be an effective antiviral agent for herpetic keratitis and a valuable alternative to idoxuridine (IDU)-therapy. BACKGROUND: TAS-102 improves overall survival (OS) of patients with refractory colorectal cancer (CRC), resulting in median progression-free survival (PFS) of 2.0 months (RECOURSE trial). Subsequently, a combination of TAS-102 and bevacizumab was shown to extend median PFS by 3.7 months. However, approximately half of these patients experience grade 3/4 neutropenia. Traumatogenic herpetic eye disease may be initiated via several pathophysiologic pathways. Trauma of the trigeminal ganglion or adequate systemic alterations are the most effective means of destabilizing ganglionic latency of the herpesvirus with consequent neuronal peripheral virus shedding. Peripheral stimuli seem to have far less effect on ganglionic latency--at least in man. The authors report on a rare case of proven herpetic primary disease. The trigger was probably a small intrastromal foreign body which caused an unusual alteration of the cornea with long-standing healing disorders.

Six patients with previous history of herpetic keratitis were seen during the 48 first hours after the out set of a conjunctivitis. Herpes simplex virus type 1 was isolated in all cases. Treated immediately with trifluorothymidine, they healed quickly without developing any corneal lesions. These data suggest the use of early antiviral treatment in patients with recurrent herpetic keratitis, even preventive therapy in at risk patients in well known predisposing conditions.
