Algorithms for locating accessory pathways: How far should we trust?

Algorithms for locating accessory pathways (APs) are widely used in planning catheter ablation for patients with ventricular preexcitation. These algorithms typically rely on characteristics of the delta wave and QRS complex to predict AP location. However, factors such as anatomical variations, age, the presence of multiple APs, and patient biotype can lead to inaccuracies. We present the case of a patient with ventricular preexcitation but no comorbidities, whose electrocardiogram (ECG) suggested an AP location entirely different from that predicted by standard algorithms. This discrepancy l

Consuming hurricane-related media: The protective role of perceived trust.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether perceived trust in media was associated with post-Hurricane Harvey traumatic stress symptoms and tested whether it buffered the association between hurricane-related media exposure and post-Hurricane Harvey traumatic stress symptoms. METHOD: A probability-based, representative sample of Texas residents, drawn from the GfK KnowledgePanel, were surveyed online three times: 2 weeks (N = 1,137), 6 weeks (N = 1,023), and 14 months (N = 748) after Hurricane Harvey (a Category 4 storm) made landfall in 2017. Measures included traumatic stress symptoms, Hurricane Harvey

Age-group differences in trust-related decision-making and learning.

Facial impressions contribute to evaluations of trustworthiness. Older adults are especially vulnerable to trust violations, incurring risks for deception and exploitation. Using the newly developed social Iowa Gambling Task (S-IGT), we examined age-group differences in the impact of facial trustworthiness on decision-making and learning. In the congruent condition (CS-IGT), advantageous decks were paired with trustworthy faces and disadvantageous decks with untrustworthy faces. In the incongruent condition (IS-IGT), this pairing was reversed. Younger (n = 143) and older (n = 129) participants

Trust your gut: an early life lesson for T cells.

Zegarra-Ruiz et al. demonstrate that gut microbe-specific T cells are selected within the thymus exclusively during early life in mice. This selection is dependent on CX3CR1+ dendritic cells migrating from the gut carrying bacterially derived antigens into the thymus. This offers new insight into how gut microbiota influence T cell development.

Trust, efficacy and ethicacy when testing prisoners for COVID-19.

PURPOSE: The outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus and subsequent COVID-19 illness has had a major impact on all levels of society internationally. The extent of the impact of COVID-19 on prison staff and prisoners in England and Wales is unknown. Testing for COVID-19 both asymptomatic and symptomatic, as well as for antibodies, to date, has been minimal. The purpose of this paper is to explore the widespread testing of COVID-19 in prisons poses philosophical and ethical questions around trust, efficacy and ethicacy. Nonverbal Behaviors "Speak" Relational Messages of Dominance, Trust, and Composure.

Nonverbal signals color the meanings of interpersonal relationships. Humans rely on facial, head, postural, and vocal signals to express relational messages along continua. Three of relevance are dominance-submission, composure-nervousness and trust-distrust. Machine learning and new automated analysis tools are making possible a deeper understanding of the dynamics of relational communication. These are explored in the context of group interactions during a game entailing deception. The "messiness" of studying communication under naturalistic conditions creates many measurement and design obs

Alpha suppression over parietal electrode sites predicts decisions to trust.

Decisions to trust help form the basis of relationships and society yet little is known about their neurophysiology. We told participants they were playing a coin toss game with a trustworthy and an untrustworthy person and measured their neural activity with EEG as they decided whether to trust those fictitious interaction partners. Target people ostensibly correctly reported the outcome of a coin toss on 66% of trials. Behaviorally, participants probability matched and chose to trust the reported coin flips from each profile equally by the end of 100 trials. Electrophysiologically, there wer

The randomised uterine septum transsection trial (TRUST): design and protocol.

BACKGROUND: A septate uterus is a uterine anomaly that may affect reproductive outcome, and is associated with an increased risk for miscarriage, subfertility and preterm birth. Resection of the septum is subject of debate. There is no convincing evidence concerning its effectiveness and safety. This study aims to assess whether hysteroscopic septum resection improves reproductive outcome in women with a septate uterus. METHODS/DESIGN: A multi-centre randomised controlled trial comparing hysteroscopic septum resection and expectant management in women with recurrent miscarriage or subfertilit

Uncertainty, decision-making and trust: lessons from the MMR controversy.

Uncertainty about the likelihood of a particular child coming to harm is a chief concern for parents making decisions about the MMR vaccine, but little attention has been given to the ways that parents cope with this uncertainty. Social science frameworks may help practitioners to understand parental decision making and its implications for community practice. In focus groups and interviews involving 87 parents, three distinct strategies for dealing with uncertainty emerged: reducing complexity through trust, compromise strategies that embrace ambivalence and identifying vulnerable groups. Seeking trust and transcendence: sexual risk-taking among Vietnamese youth.

This paper contends that sexuality research has paid far too limited attention to the phenomenology of sexual experience, thus failing to recognize the importance of embodied sensory experience for sexual perceptions and practices in general and for sexual risk-taking in particular. In order to comprehend the cultural rationales of sexual risk-taking among urban Vietnamese youth, the author presents an analysis which combines a detailed attention to the phenomenology of sexual experience with a social analysis of the wider socio-economic contexts within which sexual practices are embedded. Understanding the research methodology: should we trust the researchers' conclusions?

Understanding the methodology section of research articles is difficult for those unfamiliar with research design, but is essential for judging the credibility of the researchers' findings. The methodology section describes measures taken to avoid reaching the wrong conclusions. When comparing two or more treatments, researchers might find a difference in treatments when none exists (type I error) or not find a difference when there actually is one (type II error). Type I errors are minimized by random assignment to treatment and control groups, double blinding, ensuring that the treatment und

Global overview of vaccine trust: Evidence from a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine trust is essential for achieving high coverage rates and sustaining immunization programs worldwide. However, hesitancy intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic and the spread of misinformation has challenged trust in vaccines, healthcare professionals, and institutions. This scoping review maps global evidence on the determinants, challenges, and strategies to strengthen vaccine trust. METHOD: The review followed the JBI Brazilian Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care methodology and the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, with a protocol registered on the Open Science Framework. Searches

Joint attention modulates intergroup altruism via incidental learning of trust.

Joint attention (i.e. looking where others look) can implicitly elicit positive social behaviour: people trust more and are more altruistic toward individuals who are helpful in cueing relevant objects than toward unhelpful individuals. Does this effect extend to intergroup contexts? White and Black participants (Studies 1 and 3) and Male and Female participants (Study 2) completed a joint attention task in which outgroup faces would provide helpful cues to the response target, and ingroup faces would be unhelpful. Then, participants completed an economic ultimatum game in which they could mak

Why we believe chatbots: trust calibration as a design problem.

Chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT and Claude, answer questions quickly and fluently, yet they reveal little about how their answers are produced or what evidence supports them. Users tend to trust these systems based on surface qualities such as fluency, confidence, and speed. This trust is often miscalibrated, meaning that it does not match what the systems can actually do. Some users overtrust answers they cannot verify. Others distrust the systems and disengage. Large surveys show that many people rely on AI daily while saying they do not trust it. This artic

Before the incision: How thyroid surgeons foster patient trust preoperatively.

BACKGROUND: Patient trust in physicians is crucial but has declined over time. Understanding what language surgeons use to build trust may guide educational strategies to better prepare surgical trainees. This study aimed to identify trust-building language used by surgery attendings during preoperative counseling for thyroidectomy. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted with patients referred for thyroidectomy, their surgeons, and trainees. Preoperative clinic visits were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive thematic analysis was performed, focused on trust-building l

A Lightweight Zero-Trust-Based Authentication Framework for UAV Systems.

To address identity cloning, credential leakage, and delayed authorization in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems operating in open airspace, we propose a zero-trust authentication and authorization framework. SM9 identity-based mutual authentication establishes a traceable digital identity anchor. On-demand rotor acoustic verification then checks whether the current platform matches the registered identity. A Beta-distribution trust model converts authentication, verification, and behavioral evidence into dynamic authorization decisions. Experimental results show that the acoustic module bl

Trust is essential: implementing paediatric care coordination in rural Australia.

BACKGROUND: Trust is essential to effective healthcare relationships with service users and a key mechanism for successful implementation of service improvements. In rural settings, systemic barriers, such as workforce shortages, fragmented services, and access inequities, can erode trust in the healthcare system. Integrated care models that prioritise relational approaches may help build trust, particularly for families of children with medical complexity (CMC) who frequently navigate multiple healthcare services. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how trust was operationalised between families
