[Age-dependent alterations in clinical features of pulmonary tuberculosis].

Age-related changes in clinical features of 182 patients diagnosed as having pulmonary tuberculosis from positive culture results of tubercle bacilli were extensively investigated. The percentage of cases detected using mass miniature radiophotography (MMR) was highest in the patients aged 30-39 years, and then decreased with increasing age. It was only 16-19% in those aged 60 years or older. Certain conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, malignancy and other lung diseases, were common in the patients aged 60 years or older. Systemic symptoms, including w

MRI features of tuberculoma of the right atrial myocardium.

Myocardial tuberculosis is an infrequent disease. Until now, the diagnosis has largely been made at necropsy. Only a few reports describe the antemortem diagnosis of myocardial tuberculosis. We describe the MRI features in a 12-year-old boy with myocardial tuberculoma of the right atrium. He also had intracerebral tuberculoma. The diagnosis was later confirmed by biopsy.

Association of the past epidemic of Mycobacterium tuberculosis with mortality and incidence of COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has created a remarkable and varying impact in every country, inciting calls for broad attention. Recently, the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination has been regarded as a potential candidate to explain this difference. Herein, we hypothesised that the past epidemic of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) may act as a latent explanatory factor for the worldwide differences seen in COVID-19 impact on mortality and incidence. We compared two indicators of pa

Post-tubercular Unilateral Lung Destruction: A Complicated Case.

Pulmonary tuberculosis is associated with long-term complications that affect both the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. We present the case of a 65-year-old male patient who presented with chief complaints of productive cough and breathlessness for the last four years. Further radiological investigations revealed a left-sided destroyed lung with left lung collapse and deviation of the mediastinum towards the left side. The patient responded well to treatment with broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs and mucolytics.

Rabbit Models for Studying Human Infectious Diseases.

Using an appropriate animal model is crucial for mimicking human disease conditions, and various facets including genetics, anatomy, and pathophysiology should be considered before selecting a model. Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are well known for their wide use in production of antibodies, eye research, atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. However, a systematic description of the rabbit as primary experimental models for the study of various human infectious diseases is unavailable. This review focuses on the human infectious diseases for which rabbits are considered a classi

[A case of spontaneous regression of malignant lymphoma, complicated with miliary tuberculosis, liver dysfunction and pancytopenia].

An 82-year-old woman was admitted to Iwamizawa Rosai Hospital, Cardiovascular Medicine, for detailed examination of an aneurysm of abdominal aorta. CT scan revealed marked swelling of para-aortic lymph nodes which regressed spontaneously in three months. She was re-admitted to our hospital because of general malaise and gait disturbance. Her chest X-ray on the second admission revealed miliary disseminated shadows, which were confirmed to be tuberculous granuloma by lung biopsy. She was initially well controlled with anti-tuberculosis drugs, followed by severe liver dysfunction and pancytopeni

Bilateral multiple pulmonary artery aneurysms associated with cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery aneurysms constitute <1% of aneurysms occurring in the thoracic cavity. Congenital cardiac defects are responsible for the majority (>50%) of cases, however, pulmonary artery aneurysm is a rare sequelae of pulmonary tuberculosis reported in about 5% of patients with chronic cavitary tuberculosis on autopsy. The natural history of this potentially fatal condition remains poorly understood and guidelines for optimal management are controversial. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old man, a nursing student of African descent, was referred to us from an up-country regional

Evidence of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy in individuals from the Coimbra Skeletal Identified Collection (Portugal).

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) is characterized by symmetrical periosteal new bone deposition on the long and short tubular bones. Besides its unknown etiology, it has been associated with pulmonary, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders. The aims of this research were to assess the presence of HOA and to analyze its distribution by sex, age at death, bones affected, type of new bone formed, and cause of death. A sample of 329 individuals (non-adults and adults, of both sexes) was selected from the Coimbra Skeletal Identified Collection. The sample comprised 125 individuals diagno

One-stage posterior focus debridement, interbody graft using titanium mesh cages, posterior instrumentation and fusion in the surgical treatment of lumbo-sacral spinal tuberculosis in the aged.

PURPOSE: Aged patients represent a high risk group for acquiring spinal tuberculosis, and it still remains a leading cause of kyphosis and paraplegia in developing nations. Aged patients often combined with cardiovascular and respiratory disease and single lung ventilation via anterior approach surgery could result in more post-operative complications. We aimed to analyze the efficacy and feasibility of surgical management of aged patients with lumbo-sacral spine tuberculosis using one-stage posterior focus debridement, interbody graft using titanium mesh cages, posterior instrumentation, and

Adverse drug reactions in South African patients receiving bedaquiline-containing tuberculosis treatment: an evaluation of spontaneously reported cases.

BACKGROUND: Bedaquiline was recently introduced into World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended regimens for treatment of drug resistant tuberculosis. There is limited data on the long-term safety of bedaquiline. Because bedaquiline prolongs the QT interval, there are concerns regarding cardiovascular safety. The Western Cape Province in South Africa has an established pharmacovigilance programme: a targeted spontaneous reporting system which solicits reports of suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in patients with HIV-1 and/or tuberculosis infection. Since 2015, bedaquiline has been inclu

Patterns of Mortality for Children and Adolescents in Early 20th-Century Alaska.

OBJECTIVES: Odds of death from specific causes in infants, children, and adolescents in Alaska have not been quantified with vital records. We analyze the odds of death from 12 causes in individuals ≤ 18 years. METHODS: We fit a multinomial logistic regression model (n = 12 904 death records) controlling for Indigeneity, age, sex, and year of death to predict the odds of specific causes of death. RESULTS: Alaska Native individuals were most likely to die from tuberculosis and respiratory infections, while non-Alaska Native individuals were most likely to die from early infant health problems

Tuberculosis Beyond the Lungs: A Pictorial Review of Key Diagnostic Imaging Insights.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, traditionally associated with pulmonary manifestations. However, extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) accounts for a substantial portion of TB cases, particularly in immunocompromised patients. EPTB can affect virtually any organ system and often mimics other infectious, inflammatory, or neoplastic conditions, making diagnosis particularly challenging. This pictorial review aims to illustrate the broad spectrum of imaging findings in EPTB using selected, confirmed cases involving hepatic, splenic, adrenal, pancreatic, genitourinary

The chest X-ray features of chronic respiratory disease in HIV-infected children--a review.

Several features of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection contribute to the development of chronic respiratory disease in children. These include the frequency and severity of acute chest infections, as well as the increased risk of pulmonary tuberculosis, aspiration, cardiovascular disease, lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis or pulmonary neoplasia. The chest radiograph (CXR) remains the most accessible investigation for respiratory disease and plays an important role in the baseline assessment and follow-up. This review focuses on the CXR abnormalities of HIV-related chronic respirat

Condensed Imaging Review of Thoracic Tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a challenging global health issue and is considered the leading cause of death from infectious disease. Imaging plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and management of tuberculosis. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the disease mechanisms and associated radiologic features in active thoracic TB, including dissemination routes, covering pulmonary and extrapulmonary thoracic TB (lymph node, pleural, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal involvement). We highlight TB complications, diagnostic challenges including post-tuberculous lung disease, imaging
