Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic disease caused by fleas of the genus Tunga. The disease is reported to occur mostly in human populations. In wildlife, however, the occurrence and impact of this disease remains uncertain. We captured and examined 12 free-ranging jaguars for the presence of Tunga penetrans in the Pantanal region of Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Tungiasis prevalence was 100% in the population; lesions were confined to the jaguar's paws. T. penetrans was identified based on the characteristics of the embedded fleas and the morphological identification of a collected free-living

BACKGROUND: The parasitic skin disease tungiasis (caused by the flea Tunga penetrans) affects resource-poor communities in Latin America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. Prevalences in endemic areas are high, and severe pathology occurs commonly. However, risk factors for infestation have never been assessed in Africa.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Erekiti, a rural community in Lagos State (Nigeria), where tungiasis is endemic. Individuals were examined clinically for the presence of tungiasis, and a questionnaire was applied. Data from 643 individuals (

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis (sand flea disease) is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by female sand fleas (Tunga spp.) embedded in the skin of the host. The disease is common in sub-Saharan Africa and predominantly affects children living in impoverished rural communities. In these settings tungiasis is associated with important morbidity. Whether tungiasis impairs life quality has never been studied.
METHODS: The study was performed in 50 children with tungiasis, living in resource-poor communities in coastal Kenya. Based on the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) a tool was developed to

Tungiasis is a cutaneous ectoparasitosis caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans whose higher prevalence occurs in South America, the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa. It is clinically characterized by a papular lesion, either single or multiple, with a whitish halo and a brown-black central core, most of them localized on the feet. The lesions can be painful and itchy with the most common complication being bacterial superinfection of the skin. We report three cases of Chilean patients who presented skin lesions suggestive of tungiasis on their return from areas of high prevalence of the dise

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis, caused by Tunga penetrans, is a neglected tropical disease of major public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa. It is associated with significant health, psychological, and economic consequences. This review aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of tungiasis in Africa and identify its associated risk factors.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and African Journal Online. Studies published between June 2007 and December 2023 were included. Data were analyzed using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was quant

Sand fleas infestation, Tunga penetrans, remains a neglected tropical disease of public-health concern in many countries. Tungiasis can lead to destruction of the feet causing serious discomfort and deformities. This study aim was to determine the intensity rate and clinical morbidities of tungiasis among the people living in Igbokoda, Ondo State, Nigeria. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among households in three villages in Igbokoda. Hands and feet of selected household members were examined, while fleas on different floor types of houses were sampled by soil collection

Tungiasis is a public health disease in many rural and urban slums in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), primarily affecting children and the elderly. Yet, this disease has received little attention in many sub-Saharan African countries. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of tungiasis and associated risk factors in SSA. We searched AJOL, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed for population-based studies that reported the prevalence of tungiasis and risk factors in SSA between January 1980 and July 2020. The study employed a random-effects model and

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease caused by penetrating female sand fleas. By nature, tungiasis is a self-limiting infection. However, in endemic settings re-infection is the rule and parasite load gradually accumulates over time. Intensity of infection and degree of morbidity are closely related.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This case series describes the medical history, the clinical pathology, the socio-economic and the environmental characteristics of very severe tungiasis in five patients living in traditional Amerindian communities in the Amazon lowland of Colombia. P

Tungiasis is a common parasitic infection inmany parts of the world, including South and Central America and parts of Africa. It is rare in other places, such as in India and Pakistan and imported cases have been reported in Taiwan, Italy, the United States of America, etc. Our diagnosis was made based on histopathologiocal features of the parasite, which corresponds too ther reports and description of tungiasis.1-3 It was treated by surgical excision alone. The fact that the disease has never been reported in Nepal makes it difficult to diagnose clinically, but should be considered in the fut

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitosis causing considerable pathology in endemic areas. Standard therapy consists of removing the embedded parasite with a sterile needle. There is no effective chemotherapy at hand. To fill this gap, a double-blinded randomized controlled trial with oral ivermectin was conducted. A total of 54 individuals (27 in the placebo group, 27 in the ivermectin group) was followed up for seven days. They presented a total of 192 lesions. Patients received either ivermectin (300 microg/kg body weight at a single dose, repeated after 24 h) or placebo. Outcome measures included th

This paper describes patterns of infestation with Tunga penetrans (L., 1758) within the poor community of Araruama municipality, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, assessed by the number of persons and domestic animals parasitized. The overall prevalence of infestation was 49.2% (211 parasitized hosts) of the 429 examined. Humans (p < 0.01) and dogs (p < 0.01) were the most important hosts with 62.6% and 35.6% respectively. Dogs were considered as the potential infestation source to humans. Considering sex and age groups, both measures showed a significant difference (p < 0.01): female (62.2% in

Tungiasis is a cutaneous infestation caused by the gravid female sand flea, Tunga penetrans. We describe 2 cases of tungiasis that occurred in siblings who recently emigrated as international adoptees from Liberia to the United States. Both patients had infectious complications as a result of the infestation with T penetrans.

Tungiasis is a skin-related neglected tropical disease affecting vulnerable communities, with significant risk to both human and animal health. We investigated knowledge and practices of veterinarians in Bahia State, Brazil, regarding animal tungiasis. An online questionnaire was sent to 600 veterinarians, with a response rate of 209/600 (34.8%). A total of 197/600 (32.8%) questionnaires were valid and included in the analysis. The majority of veterinarians (158/190; 83.2%) self-reported knowledge about Tunga sp., 136/197 (69.0%) had previously treated animals with tungiasis, and 136/183 (74.3

Haiti, like most limited-resources countries in the world, faces numerous neglected infectious diseases. They represent a real public health issue with lethal consequences especially in children. We are reviewing here the available literature on four neglected infectious diseases, mansonelliasis, tungiasis, leprosy and anthrax. Filariasis, due to Mansonella ozzardi, has been totally neglected since its discovery in 1920 in Haiti; it persists in coastal homes with a high prevalence in adults when an effective treatment is available. The skin lesions caused by Tunga penetrans have existed since

Tungiasis is a parasitic skin disease neglected by authorities, health professionals, and the general population. Its occurrence is significantly associated with poverty. A cross-sectional study was conducted to describe the prevalence of tungiasis, associated clinical signs and risk factors of the canine population at a tourist site in the city of Ilhéus, Bahia (northeast Brazil). All village households were visited and dogs inspected after authorization by owners. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered. Of the 114 dogs included in the study, 71 (62.3%) were infested; all of them ha

INTRODUCTION: no formal surveillance system exists in Uganda for jiggers (tungiasis); however, outbreaks are frequently reported in the media. On 27th January 2022, a news alert reported a jiggers' outbreak in Sheema District, Southwestern Uganda. We investigated to establish the magnitude of the problem and identify possible exposures associated with infestation to inform control measures.
METHODS: we defined a confirmed case as visible Tunga penetrans (T. penetrans) in the skin of a resident of any of 6 villages in Bwayegamba Parish, Sheema District, in February 2022. A suspected case was s
