Mercury concentrations in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) correlate with environmental and landscape characteristics.

Mercury (Hg) deposited onto the landscape can be transformed into methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxin that bioaccumulates up the aquatic food chain. Here, we report on Hg concentrations in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) across New York State, USA. The objectives of this study were to: (1) test which landscape, water, and biometric characteristics correlate with total Hg (THg) concentrations in snapping turtles; and (2) determine whether soft tissue THg concentrations correlate with scute (shell) concentrations. Forty-eight turtles were sampled non-lethally from ten lakes and wetlands ac

Pathology of aural abscesses in free-living Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina).

Aural abscess or abscess of the middle ear is common in free-living Eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) of Virginia (USA) and elsewhere. Although its etiology remains unknown, hypovitaminosis A has been suggested on the basis of similar lesions occurring in captive chelonians fed diets that are deficient in vitamin A. This hypothesis was supported by significantly greater body burdens of organochlorine compounds (reported disruptors of vitamin A metabolism) and a nonsignificant trend toward lower serum and hepatic vitamin A levels in free-living box turtles with this lesion. Lesions caused by cardiovascular flukes (Digenea: Spirorchidae) in stranded green turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Evidence of infection with spirorchid flukes (Digenea: Spirorchidae) was sought at necropsy of 96 stranded green turtles, Chelonia mydas, that were examined during the course of a survey of marine turtle mortality in southeastern Queensland, Australia. Three species of spirorchid (Hapalotrema mehrai, H. postorchis, and Neospirorchis schistosomatoides) were identified. Severe disease due to spirorchid fluke infection (spirorchidiasis) was implicated as the principal cause of mortality in 10 turtles (10%), and appeared to be one of multiple severe problems in an additional 29 turtles (30%). Secretory activity in salt glands of birds and turtles: stimulation via cyclic AMP.

O2 consumption in tissue slices from the nasal salt gland of the duck and the lachrymal salt gland of Malaclemys is stimulated by methacholine, a stimulation that is inhibited by bumetanide and by ouabain. In addition, the calcium ionophore A23187 mimics the action of methacholine in stimulating this secretion-related O2 consumption in both glands, suggesting a second-messenger role for this ion in the cholinergic response. However, the adenylate cyclase activator, forskolin, and the cyclic AMP analogue, 8-cpt-cAMP, also stimulate ouabain-sensitive and bumetanide-sensitive O2 consumption in bo

Effects of temperature transients on gas exchange and acid-base status of turtles.

Pulmonary ventilation (VE), O2 consumption (VO2), and CO2 production (VCO2) were measured continuously on each of 10 turtles, Pseudemys scripta elegans, at 20 degrees C, during and for 1 h after heating to 30 degrees C and during and for 1 h after cooling to 20 degrees C. In seven of the animals, arterial blood was sampled at the three temperature plateaus. Ventilatory ratios (VE/VO2 and VE/VCO2) and metabolic rate adjusted promptly to temperature change, stabilizing at values similar to those observed previously in turtles following 1 day or more at each temperature. Likewise, mean blood pH a

Predation on sea turtles at sea: A multi-source synthesis and research perspectives.

Predation is a key ecological process shaping sea turtle populations, yet - unlike predation of eggs, hatchlings and adults on nesting beaches - its role at sea remains poorly quantified due to observational challenges. This study synthesizes multiple, rarely integrated data sources-including unpublished data-to examine global patterns of sea turtle predation at sea. Sources include field observations (turtles found stranded, nesting, admitted to rescue centers, or captured in-water for research), literature records, predator diet data, and non-conventional online sources (NCS; images and vide

Animal-human interfaces and emerging zoonoses: Salmonella in pet turtles in Concepción, Chile.

Salmonella, a globally distributed genus of Enterobacteriaceae, poses a public health risk due to its role in gastrointestinal and systemic infections. Red-eared slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans) are asymptomatic carriers of various Salmonella serovars. The objective of this study was to study the prevalence of Salmonella in different parts of pet turtles and their environment. In total, 179 samples (cloacal, shell swabs, and water) were collected from 72 pet turtles in Concepción, Chile. Using selective media and biochemical tests, 50 presumptive Salmonella isolates were found in 42

A primary neuron culture system for functional studies of anoxia tolerance in turtles.

Cultured neuronal models for non-mammalian vertebrates are uncommon but could prove useful for investigating mechanisms of exceptional physiological performance, such as anoxia tolerance. We describe a procedure to isolate, culture and characterize cerebrocortical neurons of extremely anoxia-tolerant painted turtles; we then imposed anoxia while recording reactive oxygen species (ROS) using fluorescence photometry. Cerebrocortical sheets from hatchlings were dissociated enzymatically and mechanically, and cultured for ≤7 days. Within 24 h, most cells possessed classic neuronal morphology with

DNA Virome in Cardiac Tissue from Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas) with Myocarditis.

As part of a sea turtle health monitoring program on the central east coast of Queensland, Australia, stranded and sick green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) were subjected to necropsy and histopathology. A subset of these turtles had myocarditis of varying severity, which could not be attributed to parasitism by spirorchid flukes or bacterial infections. We, therefore, undertook an investigation to determine whether virus infections might be part of the pathogenesis. Deep sequencing revealed abundant DNA virus contigs in the heart tissue, of which CRESS and circoviruses appeared to be the most c

Genomic Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes and Other Listeria Species Isolated from Sea Turtles.

Listeria monocytogenes is a ubiquitous pathogen found both in the environment and food. It can cause listeriosis in a wide range of animals as well as in humans. Investigations on presence, spread and virulence are still limited to terrestrial and human environments. Embracing the One Health Approach, investigating the presence and spread of L. monocytogenes in marine ecosystems and among wildlife, would provide us with useful information for human health. This study investigated the presence of L. monocytogenes and Listeria spp. in two species of sea turtles common in the Mediterranean Sea (C

Histological features and Gαolf expression patterns in the nasal cavity of sea turtles.

Sea turtles use olfaction to detect volatile and water-soluble substances. The nasal cavity of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) comprises morphologically defined the anterodorsal, anteroventral, and posterodorsal diverticula, as well as a single posteroventral fossa. Here, we detailed the histological features of the nasal cavity of a mature female green turtle. The posterodorsal diverticulum contained spongy-like venous sinuses and a wave-shaped sensory epithelium that favored ventilation. Secretory structures that were significant in sensory and non-sensory epithelia were probably involved in

Characterization of Antibiotic-Resistant Stenotrophomonas Isolates from Painted Turtles Living in the Wild.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a ubiquitous multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen commonly associated with nosocomial infections. The purpose of this study was to isolate and characterize extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria from painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) living in the wild and captured in southeastern Wisconsin. Fecal samples from ten turtles were examined for ESBL producing bacteria after incubation on HardyCHROM™ ESBL agar. Two isolates were cultivated and identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and whole genome sequencing (WGS) as Stenotrophomonas sp. 9A

Online sale of small turtles circumvents public health regulations in the United States.

In the United States (U.S.), pet turtles have been associated with outbreaks of salmonellosis, a serious and sometimes-fatal intestinal illness caused by Salmonella bacteria, with nearly 300,000 people being infected in some years. Children are particularly susceptible because of their propensity to put items, including small turtles, in their mouths. In 1975, a U.S. federal regulation prohibited the sale of turtles <4 inches (101.6 mm) in size, except for the purposes of export, scientific, or educational purposes. This regulation was established to reduce the incidence of salmonellosis, part

Coxiella burnetii in 3 Species of Turtles in the Upper Midwest, United States.

Coxiella burnetii, the causative bacterium of the zoonotic disease Q fever, has been documented in many different species. We describe documented turtles that were PCR positive for C. burnetii from multiple locations in Illinois and Wisconsin, USA. Assessing the conservation implications, reservoir potential, and zoonotic risk requires further research.

CHARACTERIZING THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF HISTORIC AND NOVEL PATHOGENS IN BLANDING'S TURTLES (EMYDOIDEA BLANDINGII).

Pathogens such as herpesviruses, Mycoplasma spp., and frog virus 3-like ranavirus have contributed to morbidity and mortality in many species of free-living and zoo-maintained chelonians. However, their prevalence is understudied in Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) across North America. To assess the presence of these pathogens, Blanding's turtles were sampled in Lake County, Illinois, in 2017 (N = 213) and 2018 (N = 160). DNA from cloacal-oral swabs was assayed for four ranaviruses, three Mycoplasma spp., two Salmonella spp., Emydoidea herpesvirus 1 (EBHV1), and tortoise intranuclear

Molecular epidemiology and pathology of spirorchiid infection in green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Spirorchiid blood fluke infections affect endangered turtle populations globally, and are reported as a common cause of mortality in Queensland green sea turtles. Both the flukes and their ova are pathogenic and can contribute to the stranding or death of their host. Of particular interest are ova-associated brain lesions, which have been associated with host neurological deficits. Accurate estimations of disease frequency and the relative effect of infection relating to different spirorchiid species are made difficult by challenges in morphological identification of adults of some genera, and

Free-living and captive turtles and tortoises as carriers of new Chlamydia spp.

A variety of Chlamydia species belonging to the Chlamydiaceae family have been reported in reptilian hosts but scarce data about their occurrence in turtles and tortoises are available. In this study, research was conducted to acquire information on invasive alien species (IAS) of turtles and indigenous turtles and tortoises, living both free and in captivity, as possible reservoirs of Chlamydiaceae. Analysis of specimens (pharyngeal and cloacal swabs and tissues) from 204 turtles and tortoises revealed an overall Chlamydiaceae prevalence of 18.3% and 28.6% among free-living and captive animal

Developmental basis of toothlessness in turtles: insight into convergent evolution of vertebrate morphology.

The tooth is a major component of the vertebrate feeding apparatus and plays a crucial role in species survival, thus subjecting tooth developmental programs to strong selective constraints. However, irrespective of their functional importance, teeth have been lost in multiple lineages of tetrapod vertebrates independently. To understand both the generality and the diversity of developmental mechanisms that cause tooth agenesis in tetrapods, we investigated expression patterns of a series of tooth developmental genes in the lower jaw of toothless turtles and compared them to that of toothed cr

Influence of feeding ecology on blood mercury concentrations in four species of turtles.

Mercury is a relatively well-studied pollutant because of its global distribution, toxicity, and ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in food webs: however, little is known about bioaccumulation and toxicity of Hg in turtles. Total Hg (THg) concentrations in blood were determined for 552 turtles representing four different species (Chelydra serpentina, Sternotherus odoratus, Chrysemys picta, and Pseudemys rubriventris) from a Hg-contaminated site on the South River (VA, USA) and upstream reference sites. Methylmercury and Se concentrations also were determined in a subset of samples. Becaus
