Psychiatric history, post-discharge distress, and personality characteristics among incident female cases of takotsubo cardiomyopathy: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The role of psychological factors in the onset of takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC) is still controversial. Associations with previous psychiatric conditions are registry-based; associations with personality characteristics and psychological sequelae of TC have been largely unexplored. This case-control study sought to study pre-admission psychiatric morbidity, personality traits, and post-discharge distress in incident cases of TC. METHODS: TC cases (Mayo clinic criteria) and acute myocardial infarction (MI) controls were recruited among women admitted to two Emergency Departments in

Combining personality traits with traditional risk factors for coronary stenosis: an artificial neural networks solution in patients with computed tomography detected coronary artery disease.

Background. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a complex, multifactorial disease in which personality seems to play a role but with no definition in combination with other risk factors. Objective. To explore the nonlinear and simultaneous pathways between traditional and personality traits risk factors and coronary stenosis by Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) data mining analysis. Method. Seventy-five subjects were examined for traditional cardiac risk factors and personality traits. Analyses were based on a new data mining method using a particular artificial adaptive system, the autocontractiv

Predictors of health-related quality of life in outpatients with coronary heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important treatment target in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and is associated with poor outcomes. Therefore, it is of clinical importance to identify the key determinants of HRQoL among these patients. There is, however, limited knowledge of how a comprehensive set of psychosocial factors influence HRQoL. We aimed to determine the relative associations of clinical and psychosocial factors with mental and physical components of HRQoL in a sample of CHD outpatients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,042 patient

Personality Moderates the Improvement of Depressive Symptoms After Retirement: Evidence from the GAZEL Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested a positive effect of retirement on depressive symptoms. The present study took advantage of the large-scale, prospective Gaz et Electricité (GAZEL) cohort to examine whether personality could influence this effect. METHODS: Depressive symptoms were assessed in 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, and 2008 with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Among the participants for which changes in depressive symptoms after retirement could be computed, 9,755 had completed the Buss and Durkee Hostility Inventory and the Bortner Type A Ratin

Trajectories of patient-reported health status in patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

To date, no study has assessed the course of patient-reported health status in patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Studying health status trajectories and their baseline determinants would permit the identification of patients at risk for poor health outcomes after ICD implantation. A combined cohort of 1,222 patients with an ICD (79% men; age = 61.4 [11.2] years) completed the 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey at baseline and 2 to 3 months and 12 to 14 months after implantation. Latent class analyses were used to identify trajectories and predictors of health status

Distinct trajectories of disease-specific health status in heart failure patients undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy.

PURPOSE: It is well known that a significant proportion of heart failure patients (10-44 %) do not show improvement in symptoms or functioning from cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), yet no study has examined patient-reported health status trajectories after implantation. METHODS: A cohort of 139 patients with a CRT-defibrillator (70 % men; age 65.7 ± 10.1 years) completed the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) prior to implantation (baseline) and at 2, 6, and 12-14 months post-implantation. Latent class analyses were used to identify trajectories and associates of disease-

Cognitive deficits in individuals with comorbid personality disorder and schizophrenia: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: It is estimated that approximately 40 % of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia also meet the diagnostic criteria for a personality disorder. This comorbidity is associated with an unfavorable prognosis for the illness. Given that cognition is currently the best predictor of recovery, this study aims to characterize the cognitive profiles of individuals with comorbid personality disorders and schizophrenia by reviewing literature from the past 24 years. We sought to determine whether the cognitive deficits differed from that of individuals with only a schizophrenia diagnosis, an

Personality traits and emotional patterns in irritable bowel syndrome.

The review focuses on those personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness), constructs (alexithymia and distressed - Type D personality) and emotional patterns (negative and positive) that are of particular concern in health psychology, with the aim to highlight their potential role on the pathogenesis, onset, symptom clusters, clinical course, and outcome of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Personality traits and emotional patterns play key roles in affecting autonomic, immune, inflammatory, and endocrine functions, thus contributin

Quality of Life in Cohabitants of Patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa: A Cross-sectional Study.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that impairs patients' physical and mental health. However, few studies have considered the consequences of HS on cohabitants. The aims of this study were to explore the impact of HS on the quality of life (QOL) of cohabitants and to assess potentially associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted and patients with HS and their cohabitants were invited to participate. Validated questionnaires were used to measure QOL, anxiety and depression, type D personality and sexual dysfunction. The clinical variables of patients

Psychosocial risk factors in coronary heart disease: beyond type A behavior.

OBJECTIVES: From a broad perspective of psychocardiology, our aim is to give an overview of the role that psychosocial risk factors play in coronary artery disease. METHODS: A review of the literature was made based on a systematic search of four databases: EBSCO, Proquest Psychology, Proquest Health and PubMed. In sample 1, two dependent (Coronary and Myocardial) and six independent variables (Type A, hostility, anger, depression, anxiety and psychosocial) were created. In sample 2, we searched directly for three descriptors (Type D personality, time urgency and coronary-prone behavior). Fol

Lay theories of etiology and "cure" for four types of paraphilia: fetishism; pedophilia; sexual sadism; and voyeurism.

The current study set out to investigate the structure, determinants, and relationship between lay theories of the etiology and efficacy of "cures" for four types of paraphilia: fetishism, pedophilia, sexual sadism, and voyeurism. One hundred and five participants completed a four-part questionnaire, which was divided into (a) demographic details, (b) perceptions of the etiology, (c) ratings of cure for each paraphilia, and (d) the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Previous studies of lay theories have demonstrated a clear and interpretable factor structure similar to that of explicit academi

Depressive symptoms predict recurrence of atrial fibrillation after cardioversion.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether depressive symptoms and the type-D personality are predictive of early recurrence of atrial fibrillation (or atrial flutter; AF) after successful electrical cardioversion (CV). BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are associated with an adverse prognosis in patients with coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and ventricular arrhythmias. Anger and hostility have been shown to be predictive of development of AF. However, little is known about the effects of depression on AF. METHODS: Fifty-four patients with persistent AF complet

Depression and related psychological factors in heart disease.

In this article we review the role of depression and other related psychological factors in heart disease. The prevalence of heart disease in patients with depression is high, and epidemiological links between depression and heart disease are evident in studies of community samples, psychiatric patients, and heart disease patients. We also describe the links between heart disease and related psychological factors-including vital exhaustion, Type A behavior pattern, anger and hostility, and Type D personality-and summarize proposed mechanisms that may link negative affects with heart disease. Psychological profile of patients with Brugada syndrome and the impact of its diagnosis and management.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is an arrhythmic hereditary disorder affecting mainly males, aged 30-50 years. Type D personality has a prevalence of 32.7% among BrS patients and 15% of these patients have an history of psychiatric disorders. One out of six BrS patients could develop anxiety/depression after BrS diagnosis or after the implantation of a defibrillator. This review evaluates the psychological profile of BrS patients, the impact of its diagnosis, and potential tools to evaluate these features.
