Anatomical and experimental study of certain association fascicles in the cortex of the rabbit (Oryctalagus cuniculus).

1. All lesions resulted in degeneration of the short intracortical association fibers in cortical layer I and of the short subcortical fibers which extended to the corona radiata before ending in the deeper layers of the overlying neopallium. 2. From all the lesions fibers were traced through the corona radiata to the subcallosal or the so-called superior fronto-occipital association bundle. This bundle had projection fibers to the orbitofrontal cortex. 3. From the lesion in the orbitofrontal neopallium, the orbitofrontal-pyriform connections were established. Such fibers coursed on the dorsal

Diffusion tensor imaging in borderline personality disorder showing prefrontal white matter alterations.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has repeatedly been linked to alterations in fronto-limbic dysfunction. In this study, we tested the hypothesis of disturbed structural connectivity in underlying fibre tracts and their relation to symptom profiles. We analysed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data from 18 female BPD patients and 38 female healthy controls. Group comparisons showed significant (p < .05, FDR adjusted) increase of radial diffusivity (RD) in the right frontal lobe, including the uncinate fasciculus, anterior thalamic radiation, and inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, as well

Resectability of White Matter Tracts in Patients With Language-Critical Gliomas.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Achieving maximal safe resections is critical for patients with language-eloquent gliomas. White matter tracts (WMTs) may offer valuable insights for surgical decision making, but the resectability of specific tracts remains unclear. In this study, we aim to identify predictors of permanent postoperative language deficits (PLDs) using resections of WMTs, illuminating the functional relevance of specific white matter segments. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed 78 consecutive glioma patients undergoing resection of language-eloquent tumors. WMT reconst

Microstructural White Matter Abnormalities and Cognitive Dysfunction in Subcortical Ischemic Vascular Disease: an Atlas-Based Diffusion Tensor Analysis Study.

Recent studies in subcortical ischemic vascular disease (SIVD) suggest the involvement of white matter (WM) abnormalities underlying the pathogenesis of cognitive function impairment. Here, we performed magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) on detecting WM damage and to investigate the correlations between DTI measures and cognitive dysfunction in SIVD patients. Fifty right-handed SIVD patients were recruited and divided into vascular cognitive impairment on dementia (VCIND) group and normal cognition (NC) group. Twenty-two VCIND patients and 28 NC patients underwent DTI scanning a

White matter microstructure alterations from alcohol use disorder persist into early abstinence.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a complex condition including affective, cognitive and motivational dimensions. Although AUD is known to induce diffuse brain damage, including grey matter shrinkage and ventricular enlargement, the microstructural changes it induces in white matter remain incompletely understood. This study leverages multi-shell diffusion MRI and multi-fixel models to (i) undertake whole-brain and tract-specific analyses to investigate the microstructure of white matter (WM) tracts affected by AUD, (ii) evaluate whether these differences persist in early abstinence, and (iii) cor

Bile acid profile and white matter microstructural changes in early Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Although recent disease-modifying treatments such as Lecanemab have shown promise in reducing amyloid burden and modestly slowing cognitive decline in early Alzheimer's disease (AD), effective long-term interventions remain limited. Emerging evidence links dysregulated gut-liver bile-acid (BA) metabolism to AD pathology. We examined whether peripheral BA signatures correspond to early white-matter microstructure changes in prodromal AD. METHODS: Baseline data were drawn from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. One-hundred-twenty-seven participants (46 cognitively norm

Disruption of the structural and functional connectivity of the frontoparietal network underlies symptomatic anxiety in late-life depression.

The present study investigated functional connectivity and white matter integrity of the fronto-parietal network (FPN) to reveal the neural mechanisms that underlie late-life depression (LLD). Fifty patients with LLD and 40 non-depressed controls were included in the study. A multi-parametric approach was used by applying independent component analysis (ICA) to estimate functional connectivity of the FPN and by applying tract-based spatial statistics to examine white-matter integrity in tracts to the FPN. Patients with LLD exhibited functional abnormalities in the right inferior frontal gyrus,

Systematic review of diffusion tensor imaging in spina bifida myelomeningocele: clinical implications in the era of prenatal repair.

OBJECTIVE: Spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) is a neural tube defect associated with altered brain development and impaired cognitive function. Structural brain abnormalities in SBM are well documented but less is known about potential white matter abnormalities. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a unique MRI technique able to evaluate the integrity of brain microstructure. The primary objectives of this systematic review were to describe the utility of MRI/DTI and discuss the neuroanatomical and neuropsychological effects of affected tracts, as well as the potential clinical implications in

Altered White-Matter Microstructure in Conduct Disorder Is Specifically Associated with Elevated Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Adolescents with conduct disorder (CD) and elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits have been reported to present with a more severe and persistent pattern of antisocial behaviour than those with low levels of CU traits. However, relatively few studies have investigated whether there are differences in brain structure between these subgroups. We acquired diffusion tensor imaging data and used tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to compare adolescents with CD and high levels of CU traits (CD/CU+; n = 18, CD and low levels of CU traits (CD/CU-; n = 17) and healthy controls (HC; n = 32) on measu

Longitudinal changes in microstructural white matter metrics in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Current avenues of AD research focus on pre-symptomatic biomarkers that will assist with early diagnosis of AD. The majority of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based biomarker research to date has focused on neuronal loss in grey matter and there is a paucity of research on white matter. METHODS: Longitudinal DTI data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 2 database were used to examine 1) the within-group microstructural white matter changes in individuals with AD and healthy controls at baselin

Childhood adversity, depression, age and gender effects on white matter microstructure: a DTI study.

Previous diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have shown that various factors can affect white matter (WM) tract diffusivity. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of childhood adversity (CA), age and gender on WM diffusivity in tracts that are thought to be involved in emotional regulation in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy controls (HC). DTI was obtained from 46 subjects with MDD and 46 HC subjects. Data were pre-processed and deterministic tractography was applied in the cingulum, uncinate fasciculus (UF), fornix, superior longitudinal fa

The effect of sex and handedness on white matter anisotropy: a diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging study.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging provides a way of assessing the asymmetry of white matter (WM) connectivity, the degree of anisotropic diffusion within a given voxel being a marker of coherently bundled myelinated fibers. Voxel-based statistical analysis was performed on fractional anisotropy (FA) images of 42 right- and 40 left-handers, to assess differences in underlying WM anisotropy and FA asymmetry across the whole brain. Right-handers show greater anisotropy than left-handers in the uncinate fasciculus (UF) within the limbic lobe, and WM underlying prefrontal cortex, medial a

Tract integrity predicts neurological outcomes in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Early prognostication in infants with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is crucial for follow-up management. Alternations of microstructural integrity of neural fiber tracts in large-scale neural networks might predict neurological outcomes. METHODS: All consecutively-admitted patients with neonatal HIE from 2016 to 2020 were enrolled. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography was performed at 4-7 days of age. Neurodevelopmental outcomes at 24 months of age were assessed with Bayley Scales of Infant Development, 3rd edition. RESULTS: A total of 62 HIE infants were e

A speech fluency brain network derived from gliomas.

The brain network of speech fluency has not yet been investigated via a study with a large and homogenous sample. This study analysed multimodal imaging data from 115 patients with low-grade glioma to explore the brain network of speech fluency. We applied voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping to identify domain-specific regions and white matter pathways associated with speech fluency. Direct cortical stimulation validated the domain-specific regions intra-operatively. We then performed connectivity-behaviour analysis with the aim of identifying connections that significantly correlated with spee

Revisiting the Surgical Nuances of Frontal Lobectomy for Oncology Cases: Evidence From Intraoperative and Laboratory Dissections to Inform Surgical Practice.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Frontal lobectomy is a usual procedure for neuro-oncology surgery. Interestingly, the relevant literature lacks a detailed operative roadmap focusing on the intricate parenchymal anatomy. Our aim is to provide a coherent and educational surgical manual that incorporates evidence from intraoperative and laboratory cranial and white matter dissections. METHODS: Eight cadaveric cerebral hemispheres treated with the Klingler's method and 4 latex injected cadaveric heads were used to investigate the surgical anatomy involved during a frontal lobectomy. Five illustrative
