A mixed-methods study among adolescents and teachers in Bogotá, Colombia: adapting the OurFutures Alcohol Program.

Early onset of alcohol consumption among Colombian adolescents highlights the need for effective and accessible preventive interventions. This project aimed to conduct formative work to inform the adaptation of an effective eHealth alcohol use prevention program originally developed in Australia, the OurFutures Alcohol Module, to the Bogotá context. Twenty-six adolescents and 10 teachers in Bogotá participated in the study. We used a mixed-methods approach comprising interviews, surveys and semi-structured discussions to evaluate the acceptability of OurFutures. Study materials were translated

I need new friends! Changes in perceived peer drinking norms and developmental outcomes across the transition to college.

The current study investigated changes in proximal descriptive alcohol use norms from high school to college, social integration as a predictor of stable versus shifting peer norms, and the consequences of norm profile membership for developmental outcomes. Using data (N = 9753 12th grade students; 59% female; 80% White, 7% Black, 5% Hispanic, 5% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% other races/ethnicities) from the Monitoring the Future panel study, we identified five distinct norm profiles-three stable profiles (high, moderate-high, and low) and two shifting profiles (increasing, declining)-that had u

Parental Monitoring and Its Association With Alcohol, Tobacco Cigarettes, and Cannabis Initiation in the United States Adolescent Population.

PURPOSE: Limiting time with friends (LTWF), a facet of parental monitoring, may be protective for newly incident adolescent alcohol, tobacco cigarette, and cannabis use. METHODS: We extended epidemiological evidence based on estimates from nationally representative samples of US adolescents aged 12-17 years, across 18 years of independent samples of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2002-2019). We estimated the prevalence of always LTWF, and odds ratios examining incident alcohol, tobacco cigarette, and cannabis use by LTWF within age and cohort. RESULTS: The prevalence of always L

Sleep improvement as a contributing factor to reducing alcohol use among adolescents.

Sleep quality improvement remains an underexplored protective factor for alcohol use among adolescents, a group at heightened risk for both drinking and sleep problems. This study examines the prospective association between sleep quality and alcohol use and the impact of sleep improvement on drinking behaviors. A six-month, two-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 193 Spanish adolescents (aged 15-17; 59.6 % female) who self-reported their sleep quality and alcohol use. Mixed-effects models were applied. Results showed that poor sleep predicted increased alcohol consumption (RR = 1.2; 95

Academic orientation and alcohol-related harm among adolescents : Does the inclusion of a disadvantaged group add to the social gradient?

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the social gradient in self-reported alcohol-related harm (ARH) among young alcohol consumers by including a largely overlooked group of adolescents. We also explored the extent to which such a gradient could be attributed to differential exposure or differential vulnerability to risk factors. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey of upper-secondary students (n = 2996) in Sweden. Negative binomial regressions estimated the relationship between academic orientation (higher education preparatory; HEP, vocational; VP and introductory; IP) and ARH. To assess the c

Longitudinal associations between adult-supervised drinking during adolescence and alcohol misuse from ages 25-31 years: A comparison of Australia and the United States.

Prior studies suggest that adult supervised drinking in adolescence predicts greater adolescent alcohol misuse. Long-term follow up data examining how adult supervised drinking during adolescence relates to alcohol misuse in adulthood are lacking. Longitudinal data from the International Youth Development Study tested associations between adult supervised drinking during adolescence (ages 13-16; 2002-2004) and adult alcohol misuse (ages 25-31; 2014, 2018, 2020). Cross-nationally matched samples were compared in Washington State, USA (n = 961) and Victoria, Australia (n = 1,957; total N = 2,918

Adolescent alcohol use predicts cannabis use over a three year follow-up period.

Background: Alcohol and cannabis use frequently co-occur, which can result in problems from social and academic impairment to dependence (i.e., alcohol use disorder [AUD] and/or cannabis use disorder [CUD]). The Emergency Department (ED) is an excellent site to identify adolescents with alcohol misuse, conduct a brief intervention, and refer to treatment; however, given time constraints, alcohol use may be the only substance assessed due to its common role in unintentional injury. The current study, a secondary data analysis, assessed the relationship between adolescent alcohol and cannabis us

Individual, interpersonal, organizational, and community contexts: factors associated with alcohol consumption among Brazilian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a development period characterized by biological, psychological, and social changes that may lead to risk behaviors, such as alcohol consumption. Family, school, and community contexts, together with exposure to different communication media, may contribute to adolescents' vulnerability to alcohol use. OBJECTIVE: To identify individual, interpersonal-, organizational-, and community-level factors associated with current alcohol consumption among Brazilian adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the 2019 National Survey of School H

Genetic, psychological, and environmental factors are uniquely associated with onset of alcohol use in the adolescent brain cognitive development (ABCD) study.

Alcohol use during adolescence poses a significant public health problem due to its potential long-term consequences on both physical and mental health and increased risk for developing substance use disorders later in life. Both individual (e.g., genetic liability, neural functioning, personality features) and environmental (e.g., parenting, school environment) features play an important role in accelerating or buffering the progression of early alcohol consumption. This study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (Release 5.1; N = 11,868) to provide a compreh

Real-Time Exposure to Alcohol Content in Digital Media in Adolescents: Protocol for a Multiburst Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital media frequently contains positive portrayals of alcohol content, which has been shown to be associated with alcohol-related cognitions and behaviors. Because youth are heavy media consumers and have access to unsupervised, repeat viewing of media content on their personal mobile devices, it is critical to understand the frequency of encountering alcohol content in adolescents' daily lives and how adolescents engage with the content. OBJECTIVE: This paper outlines the study protocol for examining adolescents' exposure to alcohol-related content in digital media within thei

Age verification and underage accessibility of official alcohol companies' websites and brand pages on Facebook and Instagram.

BACKGROUND: Digital alcohol marketing increases alcohol consumption among underage persons. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of age verification measures on three digital sites: official alcohol company websites and their associated brand pages on Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria. METHODS: We created three fictitious age profiles (14, 16, and 18 years) on the three digital sites. Using a smartphone and desktop computer, we assessed the presence of age verification on 15 official alcohol companies' websites, 66 alcohol brand pages on Facebook, and 72 on Instagram. Correspondence between adolescent and informant reports of substance use: Findings from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort.

Inclusion of collateral informant reports is common in adolescent psychopathology research and clinical assessment, yet few studies have examined agreement on ratings of adolescent substance use or factors that may be associated with reporter agreement. The present study aimed to extend prior work on the correspondence between adolescent and informant reports of adolescent substance use with data from a large (n=5214), diverse, community-based sample of youth aged 11-17 (mean age=14.53, SD=1.98; 52% female). Specifically, we examined: (a) agreement between adolescent and collateral informant r

Precocious Initiation into Smoking, Alcohol Use, and Gambling among Children with Conduct Problems.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent participation in risky and addictive behaviours, such as smoking, substance use, and gambling has the potential to lead to many serious problems. The presence of conduct problems (CPs) and early initiation into risky and addictive behaviours have been independently shown to be associated with adolescent and young adult smoking, drinking, and gambling. Nevertheless, the relation between early initiation into risky and addictive behaviours and CPs remains to be explored among pre-adolescents. Our study aims to examine the prospective relation between CPs in early primary sc

The Protocol for: Do peers enhance behavior change in group motivational interviewing? A translational clinical trial investigating brain synchrony in underage emerging adults during an fMRI hyperscanning task and association with alcohol use reductions.

UNLABELLED: US emerging adults under legal drinking age (underage emerging adults; U-EA; ages 18-19) are unlikely to seek or receive indicated health risk behavior interventions, thus it is imperative to find brief, effective interventions to reduce U-EA health risk behaviors, such as drinking. Developmental neuroscience reflects that peers hold higher neural salience during adolescence, as evidenced by differential neural response with real and/or simulated peers, even when those peers are not friends, and particularly in the context of alcohol. Peers also activate positive (prosocial) neural

The Sacramento Neighborhood Alcohol Prevention Project: outcomes from a community prevention trial.

OBJECTIVE: This article reports the results of the Sacramento Neighborhood Alcohol Prevention Project (SNAPP). SNAPP set as its goal the reduction of alcohol access, drinking, and related problems in two low-income, predominantly ethnic minority neighborhoods, focusing on individuals between the ages 15 and 29, an age group identified with high rates of alcohol-involved problems. METHOD: Two neighborhoods in Sacramento were selected to be the intervention sites because they were economically and ethnically diverse and had high rates of crime and other drinking-related problems. The quasi-expe

Prospective associations between stressors and alcohol use from early adolescence to young adulthood in Mexican-origin youth in the United States.

Stressors experienced across multiple domains (e.g., family and peers) may contribute to alcohol use trajectories; however, little is known about the longitudinal links between stressors and alcohol use among Latinx youth. Guided by prior work on stressors and alcohol use, the present study used longitudinal data to examine whether Mexican-origin adolescents' (N = 674; 50% female; 28% Mexico born; 72% U.S. born) experiences of family and peer stressors across early to middle adolescence (Mage = 10.86, SDage = 0.51) predicted trajectories of alcohol use frequency and binge drinking from middle

Substance-general and substance-specific influences on adolescent vaping, smoking, alcohol consumption, and illicit drug use: context, inequalities, and putative determinants.

BACKGROUND: Using substances before the age of 15 is a key antecedent of substance use treatment later in life. Since the turn of the 21st century, adolescents' lives have changed considerably, presenting new risk and protective factors. Identifying factors and contexts associated with use of specific substances among contemporary adolescents is therefore a key public health priority. METHODS: We investigated vaping, smoking, alcohol consumption, and illicit drug use, in 30,920 adolescents aged 12-15 attending 100 schools and living across 1539 neighbourhoods in the south of England. Extending the prototype willingness model to daily life: examining risk-conducive contexts and drinking among adolescents and young adults.

The Prototype Willingness Model (PWM) emphasizes the importance of risk-conducive contexts in shaping behavior, yet these contextual processes have not been examined at the daily level. This study, in line with the PWM, examined the extent to which risk-conducive contexts (e.g., personal cannabis use, others' cannabis use, others' drinking, others' drinking game engagement, being in new environments or with new people) increase alcohol use on days when individuals are more willing to engage in alcohol-related behaviors. Participants (N = 996, 57% female, 44.4% White, Mage = 20.00, SD = 3.22) w
