Implementation of universal behavioral health screening in a university health setting.

Universal screening at university health centers can facilitate early identification and treatment of behavioral health problems common among college students. This article describes the (a) process of implementing behavioral health screening at a university health center and (b) results of universal screening for depression, suicidal ideation, alcohol misuse, tobacco use, and sleep problems. We discuss the decision points involved in screening, including what to screen for, whom to screen, how to implement the screening measure, and how to deal with patients who screen positive. Clevudine University of Georgia/Abbott/Bukwang/Triangle/Yale University.

The pyrimidine analog, clevudine (L-FMAU: 2'-fluoro-5-methyl-beta-L-arabinofuranosyluridine) is a potent antihepatitis B virus (HBV) and anti-Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) agent, discovered by researchers at the University of Georgia, in collaboration with Yale University and Bukwang. Bukwang transferred its technology to Triangle Pharmaceuticals in 1998 together with a license to develop clevudine worldwide except Korea [279649], [281942]. In June 1999, Triangle and Abbott Laboratories entered into a strategic alliance to copromote antiviral products including L-FMAU [326798]. In September 2000, T

Assessment of self-medication practices and its associated factors among undergraduate students of private universities in Banadir region, Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Self-medication involves taking drugs or herbal products to treat self-diagnosed symptoms or health conditions without consulting a healthcare professional. It is a common practice and an important component of day-to-day healthcare management, particularly in developing countries, where access to health services may be limited. Health science students are often believed to be self-medicated more frequently than the general population due to their medical knowledge. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of self-medication and associated factors among undergraduate students i

This study has used the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) in an unsolicited postal questionnaire to investigate the impact of knee pain and disability in the general older population. The study provides WOMAC population data for those aged over 50 and demographic and psychosocial associations with severity of WOMAC scores. A pilot survey (n=240) and repeatability study (n=80) were undertaken to test completion of the WOMAC in this new setting. The main questionnaire was mailed to 8,995 men and women aged over 50 registered with three general practices in No

Demographic, history, university and lifestyle factors associated with university student mental health: cross-sectional analysis across five UK universities.

BACKGROUND: The whole-university approach to mental health emphasises that well-being should be a strategic priority across all aspects of higher education. However, there is limited evidence on which aspects of university life institutions should target to maximise well-being. AIM: To identify factors associated with student mental health and well-being and provide an evidence base for developing initiatives that protect and promote this. METHODS: The Nurture-U survey was conducted across five universities in the UK from 2022 to 2024. This cross-sectional sample of the survey data assessed

BACKGROUND: Human resources are central to organizational progress, where moral justice plays a key role in promoting fairness, ethics, and sustainable development. In medical universities-where education, clinical care, and administration intersect-moral justice is crucial for maintaining trust and integrity. However, there is a lack of validated models tailored to this unique context. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a conceptual model of moral justice tailored to the unique context of medical universities. Cystic fibrosis: Infection prevention & control recommendations for universities, colleges and institutes of further and higher education - A practical guide.

BACKGROUND: The avoidance of cross-infection remains of critical importance to prevent the transmission of cystic fibrosis (CF)-related microbial pathogens to persons/people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). To date, there has been a paucity of infection prevention and control (IPC) guidance relating to infection risk at higher educational institutions. With improvements in treatments, more PwCF are now attending universities/colleges and educational institutions now seek CF-specific guidance on IPC from clinical CF teams/centres. METHODS: Real world infection-related questions from university stu

Contextual influences affecting patterns of overweight and obesity among university students: a 50 universities population-based study in China.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have examined childhood and adolescent obesity, but few have examined young adults and the effect of their home and current living environments on prevalence rates. The present study explores contextual factors affecting overweight and obesity among university students in China and, in particular, focuses on how the SES-obesity relationship varies across different geographical contexts. METHODS: Participants were 11,673 students, who were identified through a multistage survey sampling process conducted in 50 universities. Individual data was obtained through a self-a

Interrelationships of food, nutrition, diet and health: the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges White Paper.

Nutrition and food science have each enhanced the development of an abundant, nutritious, safe food supply. A healthy diet should contain all of the required nutrients and sufficient calories to balance energy expenditure and provide for growth and maintenance throughout the life cycle. Importantly, dietary factors are associated with 5 of the 10 leading causes of death, including coronary heart disease, certain types of cancer, stroke, noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. National health care expenditures for 1990 totaled $666 billion of which 30% are related to inappro

Comparative study of the prevalence of abnormal eating attitudes among Arab female students of both London and Cairo universities.

Two matched samples of Arab female undergraduate students attending London and Cairo Universities were recruited to determine the relative prevalence of abnormal eating attitudes and the effect of exposure to Western culture upon this prevalence. A positive response was reported on the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40) in 22% of the students in the London group and 12% in the Cairo group, indicating that abnormal attitudes occur in this non-Western population. Six cases among the London sample fulfilled diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa, but no cases of either anorexia or bulimia were ident

Universal design of instruction to enhance learning for university students with visual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: There has been a steady increase in the number of students with disabilities (SWD) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in South Africa, with a significant number of students having visual disabilities. Equal access remains a key challenge in the classroom setting, thus emphasising a significant gap. OBJECTIVES: This paper capitalised on the significance of this gap and examined the potential of Universal Design of Instruction (UDI) to promote equal access for students with visual disabilities (SWVDs) in the classroom within a university setting in order to maximise learning ou

Investigating and Applying Universal Design: A Partnership Between a University and an Art Museum.

Community settings allow individuals to connect and interact socially with others, and engage in new learning experiences. One type of community setting, public art museums, provide rich, cultural experiences for individuals that are distinctive and often repeated, due to changing exhibits. Unfortunately, for individuals with disabilities, these settings can have a negative impact if the physical environment or the social interactions with docents impede individuals' abilities to function and benefit from this type of community engagement. The principles of universal design (UD) can transform
