The forefront for novel therapeutic agents based on the pathophysiology of lower urinary tract dysfunction: pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of overactive bladder.

Overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome, which is characterized by a complex of storage symptoms (urinary urgency, frequency, nocturia, and urgency incontinence) is highly prevalent within the general population, causing major distress to patients in terms of their psychosocial and physical functioning. Muscarinic receptors of bladder smooth muscles are involved in both normal and disturbed bladder contraction. The muscarinic receptor functions may change in bladder disorders associated with OAB, implying that mechanisms, which normally have little clinical importance, may be up-regulated and contri

Tibial Nerve Stimulation for Urge Urinary Incontinence and Overactive Bladder: Narrative Review of Randomized Controlled Trials and Applicability to Implantable Devices.

The tibial nerve is an established target for neuromodulation in the management of overactive bladder (OAB) and its associated symptoms, including urge urinary incontinence (UUI). Technologies are currently available to deliver tibial nerve stimulation (TNS) through percutaneous devices or through implantable devices. The benefits and safety of percutaneous TNS have led to it as a guideline-recommended therapy. However, patient compliance is limited by the burden of weekly office visits and the need for maintenance treatments. Further, insurance often only covers a limited number of lifetime v

Loss of ryanodine receptor calcium-release channel expression associated with overactive urinary bladder smooth muscle contractions in a detrusor instability model.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in spontaneous bladder smooth muscle contractions that occur during detrusor instability (DI), and to test the possibility that altered function or expression of ryanodine receptors (RyRs) could account for the increased bladder contractions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After 8 weeks of partial bladder outlet obstruction, DI was confirmed in female experimental rats by filling cystometry. Muscle strips were dissected from freshly isolated bladders, and isometric tension recorded in strips from DI and normal bladders. The contractions were recorded during elect

Transcutaneous Temperature Controlled Radiofrequency: Groundbreaking Technology - Female Stress Urinary Incontinence and Overactive Bladder Can Be Treated Noninvasively and with Vulvovaginal Rejuvenation?

It has long been difficult to treat vulvovaginal laxity, genitourinary syndrome of menopause, stress urine incontinence, overactive bladder (OAB), and other indications of sexual dysfunction because women traditionally find it difficult to discuss these difficulties with clinicians and because society generally accepts these diseases. Originating in esthetic medicine, noninvasive feminine rejuvenation that targets vaginal tissue with energy-based methods has recently become more popular. A more youthful-looking vulva, the restoration of vaginal elasticity and "tightness," a significant improve

Impact of Urinary Incontinence Related to Overactive Bladder on Long-Term Care Residents and Facilities: A Perspective From Directors of Nursing.

The current study assessed the impact of urinary incontinence (UI) on residents, staff, care processes, and quality measures in long-term care (LTC) settings. A 70-question quantitative online survey was sent to directors of nursing (DONs) who had worked for ≥1 year in a ≥100-bed facility (≥80% LTC beds). Of the 62% of residents with UI, 40% were always incontinent, and 81% used incontinence products for UI. Overall, 59% of DONs reported that UI management contributes to certified nursing assistant turnover. Approximately 36% of resident falls occurred while trying to get to the bathroom. LTC
