Failure of holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser lithotripsy in two horses with calculi in the urinary bladder.

Holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) laser lithotripsy was attempted in a mare and a gelding with calculi in the urinary bladder. The procedure was unsuccessful in producing adequate fragmentation of the calculi. In the gelding, pulsed dye laser lithotripsy was subsequently used to fragment the urolith. Manual removal of the urolith via the urethra was performed in the mare.

Treatment of urinary calculi with ureteroscopy and Swiss lithoclast pneumatic lithotripter: report of 150 cases.

PURPOSE: To present our clinic experience with the Swiss Lithoclast pneumatic lithotripter in the endoscopic management of urinary calculi. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From August 1994 to December 1997, 145 patients with ureteral calculi and 5 patients with urethral calculi were treated with the Swiss Lithoclast. RESULTS: In the ureteral stone group, ureteroscopic addressing of the stones was successful in 133 patients. In 27 patients, the stones were partially fragmented and remained in situ or were pushed back to the calices. They were subsequently treated successfully with SWL. Stones were frag

Unique ability of the Proteus mirabilis capsule to enhance mineral growth in infectious urinary calculi.

Struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O) calculi are a common complication of Proteus mirabilis urinary tract infections. Although urease is a major virulence factor in calculus formation, the polysaccharide capsule (CPS) of this organism also enhances struvite crystallization and growth in vitro (L. Clapham, R. J. C. McLean, J. C. Nickel, J. Downey, and J. W. Costerton, J. Crystal Growth 104:475-484, 1990). We obtained purified CPS, of known structure and varying anionic character, from P. mirabilis ATCC 49565 and several other organisms. Artificial urine was added to CPS, and the pH was elevated from 5.8 to

Wrist-ankle acupuncture combined with pain nursing for the treatment of urinary calculi with acute pain.

BACKGROUND: Urological calculi often cause renal colic, which is characterized by paroxysmal or persistent severe pain in the upper abdomen or lumbar region. Development of methods to quickly relieve these pain symptoms has garnered clinical attention. Wrist-ankle acupuncture is a type of floating acupuncture therapy administered at selected points in the carpal and ankle areas, and it has good pain-relieving effects. We used wrist-ankle acupuncture combined with pain nursing for pain intervention in patients with renal calculi to confirm its application and safety. AIM: To study the effect o

The influence of prostatic calculi on lower urinary tract symptoms and sexual dysfunction: a narrative review.

Prostatic calculi (PC) are commonly found in patients who present for urologic consultation. However, the effect of PC on urinary symptoms remains controversial. In this study, we searched the Embase and PubMed databases for literature related to the following keywords: "prostatic calculi", "prostatic stone", "prostatic lithiasis" and "prostatic calcification", along with the limits, "lower urinary tract symptoms", "sexual dysfunction", "erectile dysfunction", "erectile function", and "premature ejaculation". According to the literature, there are various subtypes of PC based on X-ray or ultra

A Case of Pure Matrix Ureteral Stone: A rare type of urinary calculi that may be overlooked.

Matrix stones are a rare form of urinary calculi with a low mineral content. We report a 63-year-old female patient who presented to the Sohar Hospital, Sohar, Oman, in 2018 with unexplained left flank pain and constipation. She had a history of chronic renal failure (CRF) and had previously undergone haemodialysis (HD). Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) did not show any renal or urinary stones. However, a left-sided ureteroscopy revealed a yellow-coloured stone that was soft in consistency occupying the proximal 5 cm section of the ureter. Many attempts at forceps extraction were required

Percutaneous cystolithotomy of large urinary-diversion calculi using a combination of laparoscopic and endourologic techniques.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with urinary diversions are at higher risk for bladder urolithiasis. Often, the stone burden is large, necessitating open stone removal. We describe our technique for removing such stones using a combination of laparoscopic and endourologic instrumentation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: With the patient in the dorsal lithotomy position or supine, cystoscopy is performed via the native urethra or catheterizable stoma, respectively. With the urinary reservoir distended with normal saline, percutaneous access is obtained under direct vision with a 10-mm trocar introduced

Analysis of feline urinary calculi and urethral plugs by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

The chemical constituents of 34 feline urinary calculi and five urethral plugs were analysed by infrared spectroscopy. The analysis revealed that 18 (52.9 per cent) of the calculi contained magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (struvite) as the major component; 10 (29.4 per cent) contained complex ammonium urates (three of them also containing calcium phosphate, mainly on the surface); three were composed of calcium phosphates and three were composed mainly of calcium oxalate mono and dihydrates. The urethral plugs were composed primarily of struvite, but also contained large amounts of or

Ultrasound versus intravenous urography in the initial evaluation of patients with suspected obstructing urinary calculi.

A consecutive series of 102 patients admitted to the radiology department for emergency intravenous urography (IVP) due to suspected obstructing urinary calculus, had an ultrasound scanning (US) performed immediately prior to the requested IVP. The scannings were performed by US-specialists who had access to all patient data except the IVP result. IVP diagnosed renal outlet obstruction in 53 of the 102 cases. This was correctly diagnosed by US in 50 cases. In three cases where IVP described acute obstruction ("white kidney") no dilatation was visible on US. The false negative rate concerning o

The incidence of urinary tract calculi after small-intestinal bypass operations for treatment of obesity.

Jejunoileal bypass operations have been used for more than 20 years for the treatment of massive obesity. This treatment results in malabsorption with diarrhoea, especially during the first year after the operation. A high incidence of urinary tract calculi have been found in these patients (4, 5, 15, 19, 24). Other known late complications are transient disturbances in liver function and electrolyte balance (5).

Retrograde ureteropyeloscopic treatment of 2 cm. or greater upper urinary tract and minor Staghorn calculi.

PURPOSE: Upper urinary tract calculi that are too large to treat with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy are most commonly cleared with percutaneous endoscopic techniques. In a select group of patients who were poor candidates for percutaneous nephrostolithotomy we used retrograde endoscopic lithotripsy, and define the safety and efficacy of this modality in treating large, noninfectious stone burdens (2 cm. or greater). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 51 patients with 66 large (2 cm. or greater) upper urinary tract stones were chosen for retrograde ureteroscopic surgery. Many of these p

Urinary Calculi Care Pathways in a French Nationwide Study: The Costs, Lithiasis and Pathways (CLiPs) Study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary stone treatment is of interest from a health-economic point of view because of competing technical approaches, high incidence and high recurrence rates. In France, since the release of the activity-based funding called T2A (for Tarification A l'Activité), concerns about possibly induced overactivity have been increasing. A flat-sum-based payment per stone episode has even been proposed. This study aims to describe different parameters, such as reintervention rates. METHODS: Using the linkage between different stays of one patient, we studied multiple stays and procedures i
