Postoperative catheterization, urinary retention, and permanent voiding dysfunction after polytetrafluroethylene suburethral sling placement.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of permanent voiding dysfunction after polytetrafluoroethylene suburethral sling placement, and to assess the effect of voiding mechanism and uroflowmetry on the duration of postoperative catheterization. METHODS: Between January 1986 and April 1991, 108 patients underwent suburethral sling procedures to treat genuine stress incontinence. Medical records were reviewed to collect urodynamic and catheterization data. One year or longer after surgery, 98 women completed a telephone interview evaluating incontinence, self-catheterization, and voiding symptoms

Post-cesarean section urinary tract infection: a comparison between intermittent and indwelling catheterization.

Catheterization, which is widely accepted as an important factor to urinary tract infection, is routinely done during cesarean section. This randomized study was conducted to compare the incidence of urinary tract infection between patients who underwent cesarean section using intermittent catheterization and indwelling catheterization, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ramathibodi Hospital from August 1991 to December 1991. Sixteen of 51 patients (31.4%) of the intermittent group and 9 of 47 patients (19.1%) of the indwelling group developed urinary tract infection. The differen

Effects of Routine Catheterization on Urinary Tract Infection Rates After Minor Gynecologic Surgeries.

This pilot study describes urinary tract infection (UTI) rates after routine single catheterization during minor gynecologic surgeries at a tertiary care community hospital. Records from 762 patients from 2021 were reviewed, including procedures such as hysteroscopy, loop electrosurgical excision procedure, and dilation and curettage. Findings revealed a 42.4% catheterization rate, with a significantly higher proportion of catheterized patients having UTIs (5.6%) compared with noncatheterized patients (2.5%). This study suggests that catheterization, unless medically necessary, should be avoid

Anthocran® Phytosome®: Prevention of Recurring Urinary Infections and Symptoms after Catheterization.

In this preliminary pilot registry study, we investigated the effects of the oral supplementation of a standardized cranberry extract (Anthocran® Phytosome®, Indena) delivered by a lecithin-based system, for the prophylactic management of recurrent-urinary tract infections (R-UTIs). We included 64 otherwise healthy subjects who underwent a surgical procedure and required post-surgical urinary catheterization for high-risk UTIs or a previous history of R-UTIs. Patients were given supplementation with the standardized cranberry extract at the dose of either 120 mg/day (n = 12) or 240 mg/day (n =

Urinary catheterization as a successful treatment option for post-cesarean section vesicouterine fistula.

Surgery, the usual treatment option for vesicouterine fistula (VUF), is often delayed to allow involution of the uterus. The authors report a case of successful treatment with urinary catheterization. A 39-year-old, gravida 7, para 6, woman presented at term with obstructed labor. She had one previous cesarean section followed by a vaginal birth before. She underwent emergency cesarean section. She was readmitted after one week because of pelvic collection. Aspiration revealed pus and urine. Retrograde cystogram and pelvic MRI confirmed the presence of VHF. Urinary bladder catheterization for

Urinary catheterization may not adversely impact quality of life in multiple sclerosis patients.

Background. Multiple sclerosis (MS) healthcare providers (HCP) have undergone considerable educational efforts regarding the importance of evaluating and treating pelvic floor disorders, specifically, urinary dysfunction. However, limited data are available to determine the impact of catheterization on patient quality of life (QoL). Objectives. To describe the use of urinary catheterization among MS patients and determine the differences between those who report positive versus negative impact of this treatment on QoL. Methods. Patients were queried as part of the 2010 North American Research

Sacral neuromodulation for multiple sclerosis patients with urinary retention and clean intermittent catheterization.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, debilitating, neurological disease with numerous urological manifestations including urinary detrusor overactivity, detrusor sphincter dyssynergia, and urinary retention. Can sacral neuromodulation be successfully implemented for urinary retention in ambulatory women with multiple sclerosis? METHODS: Between January 2002 and January 2008, we conducted an observational retrospective case-control study where 12 of 14 consecutive, ambulatory women with multiple sclerosis had stage 1/2 sacral neuromodulation performed under general ane

Bacteriuria during urinary tract catheterization: suprapubic versus urethral route: a prospective randomized trial.

In this randomized prospective trial urethral and suprapubic routes were compared in terms of tolerance and infectious potential. Daily bacteriuria determined infectious danger and patients were interrogated on the pain and discomfort induced by their catheter every day. Identical single dose pre-operative antibiotic prophylaxis was routinely applied. Patients (n = 50) were divided into two similar groups (25 suprapubic catheters and 25 urethral catheters). Four patients in the suprapubic group were excluded. All specimen cultured by suprapubic catheter remained sterile. Nine patients with ure

[Nosocomial urinary tract infections in patients with prolonged bladder catheterization: un unsolved problem].

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the primary cause of hospitalary infection. We have prospectively studied during a 8-month period, 94 episodes of UTI in 61 patients with a mean age of 77 years and with a high percentage of vesical sounding (70.5%). The most frequent cause of sounding was urinary incontinence (74%) and in just 15% of all cases, there was a strict urological indication. The association fever/sounding was statistically significant (p < 0.05) and, when analyzing the prognosis factors, we observed that patients who had a significantly higher risk were those with vesical sounding (

The Impact of Urinary Catheterization on the Antibiotic Susceptibility of ESBL-Producing Enterobacterales: A Challenging Duo.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is currently a growing concern among healthcare providers, underscoring the importance of describing the regional susceptibility profile for common microorganisms that are associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs). This knowledge serves as the foundation for proper empirical therapeutic recommendations tailored to local susceptibility patterns. RESULTS: We found a high prevalence of ESBL-producing strains (36.9%), with Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. being the most prevalent isolated bacteria. Among the catheterized patients, Klebsiella

Clean Intermittent Self-Catheterization as a Treatment Modality for Urinary Retention: Perceptions of Urologists.

PURPOSE: Clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) is now considered the gold standard for the management of urinary retention. In the literature, several articles on patients' perspectives on CISC and adherence to this technique have been published. No studies have yet explored the points of view of professional caregivers, such as nurses and doctors. The aim of this study was to explore the opinions of urologists about CISC and to evaluate the need for dedicated nurses specialized in CISC through a self-administered questionnaire. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed to explore the o

Retrograde catheterization of the urinary bladder in healthy male goats by use of angiographic catheters.

OBJECTIVE To identify and evaluate 3 types of angiographic catheters for retrograde urinary bladder catheterization in healthy male goats. ANIMALS 12 sexually intact yearling Alpine-cross bucks. PROCEDURES Three 5F angiographic catheters of the same length (100 cm) and diameter (0.17 cm) but differing in curvature at the tip were labeled A (straight tip), B (tip bent in 1 place), and C (tip bent in 2 places). During a single anesthetic episode, attempts were made to blindly pass each catheter into the urinary bladder of each goat. Order of catheters used was randomized, and the veterinarian pa

Antibiotic prophylaxis for urinary tract infections in children with spina bifida on intermittent catheterization.

PURPOSE: Antibiotic prophylaxis (low dose chemoprophylaxis) has been prescribed since the introduction of clean intermittent catheterization in children with spina bifida. We hypothesized that stopping low dose chemoprophylaxis does not increase the number of urinary tract infections in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 176 patients with spina bifida participated in a randomized controlled trial (ISRCTN trial number 56278131) of either continuation or discontinuation of low dose chemoprophylaxis. During the 18-month study period biweekly urine samples were evaluated for leukoc

Management of postoperative urinary retention: a randomized trial of in-out versus overnight catheterization.

BACKGROUND: There has been no consensus on the best catheterization strategy for the management of postoperative urinary retention. A prospective randomized trial was undertaken to establish the best practice guidelines for the management of postoperative urinary retention. The authors also evaluated the contemporary incidence of urinary retention following different categories of general surgery and examined risk factors associated with its occurrence. METHODS: All patients who underwent elective inpatient surgery between January 2002 and June 2003 were recruited into the study. Patients who

Use of norfloxacin for prevention of symptomatic urinary tract infection in chronically catheterized patients.

Thirty-four elderly inpatients with long-term urethral catheters were randomly assigned to receive either norfloxacin (200 mg/day) or placebo in a double-blind study with cross-over after three months. Twenty-three patients completed the entire study. Norfloxacin treatment was associated with a persistent decrease in gram-negative isolates (p < 0.005) and the acquisition of gram-positive norfloxacin-resistant flora. It also resulted in a highly statistically significant reduction of symptomatic urinary tract infections (1 vs. 12, p < 0.02), a decrease in catheter-associated local complications
