Ethnic diversity and urolithiasis: a single-center experience.

Despite the diversity in the prevalence and risk factors of urolithiasis across different geographic regions, limited information exists among various ethnic groups of the same population. This study investigates the prevalence of kidney stones (KSs) among different ethnicities in a single center in Qatar and the risk factors associated with KS formation. This retrospective cross-sectional study was on Qatari residents who visited Al-Khor Hospital between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2019. All adult permanent residents who presented with KSs or visited the hospital for general check-ups an

Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in urolithiasis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Urolithiasis is among the most prevalent and possibly devastating diseases. It affects millions worldwide, and a cheap or rapid biomarker is required to diagnose it. Previous investigations revealed that inflammation has a role in the progression of urolithiasis patients, and an elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) value can be a valuable biomarker to ensure inflammation and, consequently, renal stones. This study was conducted to summarize the results of studies investigating the role of NLR in urolithiasis. METHODS: We systematically searched three main databases (Scopu

Recurrent symptomatic urolithiasis in a patient with cystic fibrosis.

A 6-month-old girl, previously diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), was admitted to hospital for nephrolithiasis. Her parents were first-degree cousins. The patient underwent endoscopic stone management. Despite no family history of stones and medical treatment with potassium citrate, the patient developed recurrent renal stones and atypical urinary tract infections during follow-up. Basic investigations were all normal. Due to consanguinity and early presentation of nephrolithiasis, metabolic causes such as cystinuria and hyperoxaluria were considered. Cystinuria was excluded due to normal cy

Efficacy of Bisphosphonate for Urolithiasis Complicated by Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

A 44-year-old man with osteogenesis imperfecta presented with left renal colic. Non-contrast computed tomography revealed a stone (10×9 mm) in the left upper ureter. Ureteroscopic lithotripsy was performed twice and stone-free status was achieved. An analysis of the stone revealed a mixed composition including calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate. Postoperatively, we administered bisphosphonates to prevent recurrence of urolithiasis, as 24-hour urine collection revealed marked hypercalciuria. Eighteen months after surgery, the urinary calcium levels had normalized, and there was no recurrence

Ureteral morphology and pathology during urolithiasis in cats.

Cats exhibit high susceptibility to urinary organ-related diseases. We investigated the healthy ureter morphologies and compared these with ureters that were surgically resected distal to a urolithiasis obstruction in cats. Healthy ureters (total length 9.88 ± 0.38 cm) developed adventitia composed of collagen fibers (ADCF), containing a longitudinal muscular layer, toward the distal segment. The healthy ureter was the smallest in the middle segment (4.71-6.90 cm from the urinary bladder) with significantly decreased luminal and submucosal areas compared to those in the proximal segment. Disea

Local Anesthetic Flexible Ureterorenoscopy in the Management of Urolithiasis.

Introduction: Patients unfit for general anesthesia who present with renal tract pathology currently have limited options. Many of these patients present in the emergency setting with imperative reasons for intervention, including sepsis, renal failure, and pain. Conservative management and temporizing measures, such as percutaneous nephrostomy, are associated with significant morbidity. Ureterorenoscopy (URS) is a central component of the management of upper tract disease and is routinely performed under general anesthesia. We describe our institution's experience of URS using only local anes

[Genetic and biochemical features of the monogenic hereditary urolithiasis].

Urolithiasis is a common urological problem. In most cases, this multifactorial pathology develops due to the combination of inherited low-penetrance gene variants and environment factors such as urinary tract infections and unbalanced diet. However, some cases are monogenic. These hereditary forms of urolithiasis manifest in childhood, and are characterized by multiple, bilateral and recurrent kidney stones and progress to chronic renal failure relatively early. Due to widening acceptance of exome and gene panel sequencing, substantially larger percentages of urolithiasis cases are now attrib

[Genetic factors for monogenic forms of calcium urolithiasis].

The article presents pooled results of domestic and international studies investigating genetic aspects of urolithiasis associated with impaired calcium metabolism. The review highlights the importance of early and accurate diagnosis of hereditary diseases associated with kidney stone formation. Of more than 80 currently known monogenic forms of urolithiasis, the authors provide the list of the most significant forms. Using such molecular genetic methods as NGS (next generation sequencing) allows accurate detection of the genetic cause of the disease, develop an individual approach the patient

[Urate urolithiasis: pathogenesis and possibilities of conservative therapy].

Urolithiasis is a widespread chronic disease; its prevalence has been steadily increasing over the past 50 years. Urolithiasis accounts for a large proportion urologic diseases, exceeded only by urinary tract infections and diseases of the prostate. Urate urolithiasis refers to a type of urolithiasis, characterized by the formation of kidney stones consisting of uric acid or its salts. In populations of industrialized countries, uric acid is the second or third most frequently occurring stone-forming substance. The article summarizes the data on the global prevalence of both urolithiasis as a

Calcium sulfate dihydrate urolithiasis in a pet rabbit.

CASE DESCRIPTION A 3-year-old sexually intact male rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was evaluated because of a 1-day history of signs of anorexia and depression. CLINICAL FINDINGS Clinical examination revealed signs of depression, hunched posture, low skin elasticity (suggesting dehydration), slightly distended abdomen, and penile and preputial edema. The owner reported that the rabbit had been fed a routine diet, received water via a sipper bottle, and was allowed free movement around the home. It had been observed by the owner to bite and chew gypsum-based plaster from the walls of the home. A
