Utah Project on Exfoliation Syndrome (UPEXS): Insight Into Systemic Diseases Associated With Exfoliation Syndrome.

The Utah Project on Exfoliation Syndrome (UPEXS) study was created to investigate the association between exfoliation syndrome (XFS) and systemic disorders or pathologies. The study utilizes the resources of the Utah Population Database, which is linked to the Utah genealogy, a compilation of large pedigrees extending back 3 to ≥11 generations, representing most families in the state. These family members medical and health records are linked to vital records and can be used effectively to identify familial clustering of disorders, like XFS, with comorbid diseases or health-related data. A captive-bred Bobwhite Quail ( Colinus virginianus) ranch in southern Utah, US experienced high mortality rates in the late summer and fall of 2012. Nine juvenile birds were necropsied at the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Gross lesions included pale skeletal muscle with multifocal hemorrhages and petechiae in the air sacs and serosal surfaces of most organs. Histologically there was moderate to severe, multifocal, degenerative myositis with intramyofiber schizonts and minimal lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in the proventriculus, ventriculus, heart, and skeletal muscle. There was also

Coccidioidomycosis in workers at an archeologic site--Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, June-July 2001.

Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection caused by inhalation of airborne Coccidioides immitis spores that are present in the arid soil of the southwestern United States, California, and parts of Central and South America. Infection with C. immitis previously has not been diagnosed in patients outside these areas, except in travelers returning from areas where the disease is endemic. This report describes an outbreak of coccidioidomycosis in workers at an archeologic site in northeastern Utah during June-July, 2001, and represents the first identification of coccidioidomycosis in northern Utah

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Zion National Park, Utah.

An epizootic of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IK) was studied opportunistically in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Zion National Park, Utah (USA), from November 1992 to March 1994. Moraxella sp. and Chlamydia sp. were isolated from the conjunctiva of two of seven deer. In addition, Thelazia californiensis occurred on the conjunctivas of six of seven deer. Based on field observations, adults appeared to be affected clinically at a higher incidence during both years as opposed to juveniles. Corneal opacity was the most apparent clinical sign from 1992 to 1993. However, in th

Adverse respiratory outcomes among head and neck cancer survivors in the Utah Cancer Survivors Study.

BACKGROUND: The number of head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors has been increasing because of improving survival in the United States. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of respiratory disease diagnoses in HNC survivors in comparison with cancer-free individuals. A second aim was to investigate risk factors for respiratory disease among HNC survivors. METHODS: Patients with HNC diagnosed from 1996 to 2012 were identified in the Utah Cancer Registry (n = 1901). Up to 5 cancer-free individuals from the general population (n = 7796) were matched to each HNC survivor by birth yea

Sediment potentially controls in-lake phosphorus cycling and harmful cyanobacteria in shallow, eutrophic Utah Lake.

Lakes worldwide are impacted by eutrophication and harmful algal or cyanobacteria blooms (HABs) due to excessive nutrients, including legacy P released from sediments in shallow lakes. Utah Lake (northern Utah, USA) is a shallow lake with urban development primarily on the east side of the watershed, providing an opportunity to evaluate HABs in relation to a gradient of legacy sediment P. In this study, we investigated sediment composition and P concentrations in sediment, pore water, and the water column in relation to blooms of harmful cyanobacteria species. Sediments on the east side of the

A Description of Suspected Concussions in Football-Related Activities among K-12 Students in Utah.

The circumstances and nature of concussions among youth who play tackle, flag, or touch football are not well understood. This study used data from Utah's Student Injury Reporting System (SIRS) to explore suspected concussions among K-12 students sustained during participation in football-related activities (tackle, flag, or touch football). Descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses showed that 54.7% of suspected concussions due to football-related activity were among elementary and middle school and 41.3% were among high school students. Most suspected concussions resulted from being str

Motherhood and assisted reproduction in a religious context: Genes, stigma and supports in Utah, United States.

Six percent of cisgender (i.e. not transgender) women aged 15-44 are considered infertile in the United States, and 12% are unable to carry a pregnancy to term. For those who yearn to create a family despite these circumstances, assisted reproductive technology (ART) is an often-utilised resource. Though faith-based institutions have been referenced as a source of support for involuntarily childless adults, it is unclear how religious doctrine, especially that which prizes 'traditional' gender roles and genetic parenthood, may be a catalyst for distress. More research is needed to understand h

Characterizing patterns of genomic variation in the threatened Utah prairie dog: Implications for conservation and management.

Utah prairie dogs (Cynomys parvidens) are federally threatened due to eradication campaigns, habitat destruction, and outbreaks of plague. Today, Utah prairie dogs exist in small, isolated populations, making them less demographically stable and more susceptible to erosion of genetic variation by genetic drift. We characterized patterns of genetic structure at neutral and putatively adaptive loci in order to evaluate the relative effects of genetic drift and local adaptation on population divergence. We sampled individuals across the Utah prairie dog species range and generated 2955 single nuc

Effect of salinity on mercury methylating benthic microbes and their activities in Great Salt Lake, Utah.

Surface water and biota from Great Salt Lake (GSL) contain some of the highest documented concentrations of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the United States. In order to identify potential biological sources of MeHg and controls on its production in this ecosystem, THg and MeHg concentrations, rates of Hg(II)-methylation and MeHg degradation, and abundances and compositions of archaeal and bacterial 16 rRNA gene transcripts were determined in sediment along a salinity gradient in GSL. Rates of Hg(II)-methylation were inversely correlated with salinity and were at or below the

Potential for Waterborne and Invertebrate Transmission of West Nile Virus in the Great Salt Lake, Utah.

In November and December of 2013, a large mortality event involving 15,000 to 20,000 eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis) occurred at the Great Salt Lake (GSL), UT. The onset of the outbreak in grebes was followed by a mortality event in >86 bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). During the die-off, West Nile virus (WNV) was detected by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) or viral culture in the carcasses of grebes and eagles submitted to the National Wildlife Health Center. However, no activity of mosquitoes, the primary vectors of WNV, was detected by the State of Utah's WNV monitoring progra

Risk of Incident Colorectal Cancer and Death After Colonoscopy: A Population-based Study in Utah.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Colonoscopy is widely recommended for colorectal (CRC) screening in the United States, but evidence of effectiveness is limited. We examined whether exposure to colonoscopy decreases the odds of incident CRC and death from CRC in Utah. METHODS: We performed a case-control study of Utah residents, 54 to 90 years old, who received a CRC diagnosis from 2000 through 2010 (cases). Age- and sex-matched controls with no history of CRC (controls) were selected for each case. We determined receipt of colonoscopy 6 months to 10 years before the reference date for each case and contro

Epidemiology and familial risk of synchronous and metachronous colorectal cancer: a population-based study in Utah.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) are at risk for synchronous and metachronous lesions at the time of diagnosis or during follow-up evaluation. We performed a population-based study to evaluate the rate, predictors, and familial risk for synchronous and metachronous CRC in Utah. METHODS: All newly diagnosed cases of CRC between 1980 and 2010 were obtained from the Utah Cancer Registry and linked to pedigrees from the Utah Population Database. RESULTS: Of the 18,782 patients diagnosed with CRC, 134 were diagnosed with synchronous CRC (0.71%) and 300 were diagn

Association of twinning and maternal age with major structural birth defects in Utah, 1999 to 2008.

BACKGROUND: Twinning is a risk factor for birth defects. Using population-based data from the Utah Birth Defect Network and the Utah Department of Health Vital Records, we investigated whether twinning increases the risk of major structural birth defects in live-born opposite-sex (OS) and same-sex (SS) twins as proxies for monozygotic and dizygotic twins, respectively. We also assessed whether maternal age modified the association between twinning and birth defects. METHODS: All resident live-born singleton (n = 492,143) and twin (n = 13,596) infants issued a Utah birth certificate and delive

Persistent lack of detectable HIV-1 antibody in a person with HIV infection--Utah, 1995.

Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is diagnosed routinely by the enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for HIV-1 antibody; a nonreactive blood sample is designated as negative without further testing. However, one limitation of this screening algorithm is that a blood sample may be obtained from a patient with recent HIV infection before detectable HIV antibody is present ("window period"). This report describes a patient with confirmed HIV infection in whom EIAs for HIV antibody (HIV-EIAs) were persistently negative beyond the expected "window period."

Partner notification for control of HIV: results after 2 years of a statewide program in Utah.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate the utility of partner notification for control of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and to identify subgroups in which it may be most effective. METHODS: All persons reported to be HIV-positive during a 2-year period were interviewed. Outcome measures included proportion of index patients cooperating; number of partners named, located, counseled, and tested; number of persons newly testing positive; and costs. RESULTS: Of 308 index patients, 244 (79%) cooperated. They named 890 partners; 499 (70%) of in-state partners were located. Of these, 154

A search for iridium abundance anomalies at two late cambrian biomere boundaries in Western utah.

Iridium concentrations have been measured in samples taken across two Late Cambrian biomere boundaries (crisis zones) in search of evidence for possible elemental abundance anomalies similar to the one observed at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. Sampling was performed in uplifted marine limestone deposits in the House Range of western Utah. Although the two trilobite-brachiopod extinction boundaries could be assigned to +/-4 millimeters of vertical section by laboratory examination of the rocks, only background amounts of iridium (2 x 10(-12) to 17 x 10(-12) gram per gram of whole rock) were
