BACKGROUND: Uveitis is a major cause of visual impairment throughout the world. Analysis of cytokine profiles in aqueous humor specimens may provide insight into the physiopathological processes that underly retinal damage in this context.
METHODS: Using a multiplex assay, we determined the concentrations of 17 cytokines and chemokines in aqueous humor specimens obtained from patients with ocular toxoplasmosis or viral uveitis and compared these concentrations with those in specimens obtained from patients with noninfectious intermediate uveitis or cataract.
RESULTS: Five mediators (interleu

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between serum SIL-2R levels and uveitis.
METHODS: SIL-2R levels were measured in sera of 64 patients with active uveitis by ELISA assay, 61 healthy subjects as control.
RESULTS: Serum SIL-2R levels in the patients with active uveitis were significantly higher than that in the controls, but there were no significant difference among anterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, Behcet disease and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome. After therapy the serum SIL-2R levels were obviously decreased.
CONCLUSION: SIL-2R Levels in serum correlate with activity of uveiti

In a search for alternative therapeutic methods other than corticosteroids and cytostatics, the effect of a dialyzable leukocyte extract (DLE), the antimetabolite 5-fluorouracil and the immunosuppressive agent cyclosporin A in corticosteroid-resistant idiopathic uveitis was studied. When DLE was administered to 26 patients who had uveitis forms with exogenous triggering (e.g., infection), as well as forms with an autoimmune background, there was a reduction in the number and duration of recurrences and a statistically proven prolongation of the inflammation-free intervals. This was particularl

Uveitis is inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, called the uveal tract. It can be classified by anatomic location of the focus of inflammation inside the eye: intermediate, posterior or pan-uveitis. These types are less common than anterior uveitis (iritis), but more often have underlying aetiologies that require identification. Some aetiologies are infective, while others require systemic immunosuppression. Underlying aetiologies vary in different regions in the world, and so local data is important to guide clinicians. This study describes the aetiology of 255 cases of intermediate,

BACKGROUND: Uveitis is a term used to describe a group of intraocular inflammatory diseases. Uveitis is the fifth most common cause of vision loss in high-income countries, with the highest incidence of disease in the working-age population. Corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment for all subtypes of non-infectious uveitis. They can be administered orally, topically with drops, by periocular (around the eye) or intravitreal (inside the eye) injection, or by surgical implantation.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of steroid implants in people with chronic non-infectious p

PURPOSE: To provide an overview of pediatric pars planitis.
METHODS: Narrative literature review.
RESULTS: Pars planitis refers to the idiopathic subset of intermediate uveitis in which there is vitritis along with snowball or snowbank formation occurring in the absence of an associated infection or systemic disease. It is thought to be a T-cell mediated disease with a genetic predisposition. Pars planitis accounts for 5-26.7% of pediatric uveitis cases. Presentation is commonly bilateral but asymmetric, often with insidious onset of floaters and blurred vision. Although pars planitis is kno
