To increase community conversations about COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, we distributed vaccine cardholders and conversation cards to 6000 newly vaccinated adults at vaccination sites and encouraged them to talk with unvaccinated friends and family members. In 257 onsite exit interviews, we found that cardholders and conversation cards were well liked, and most recipients expected to use them. Follow-up surveys two weeks later showed that 51% of respondents used a card to start a conversation and 41% gave a card to an unvaccinated friend or family member. BACKGROUND: Strategies to increase COVID-19 vaccine coverage require an understanding of the extent and drivers of vaccine hesitancy and trust in government related to COVID-19 vaccine programs, especially in low-resource communities.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional household survey post-COVID-19 vaccine introduction among adults (n = 362) in four municipalities in Sarlahi District, Nepal from August to December 2022. The survey included modules on participant demographics and socioeconomic factors and vaccine hesitancy, information seeking, and trust in authorities related to COVID-1

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Some refugee and migrant populations globally showed lower uptake of COVID-19 vaccines and are also considered to be an under-immunized group for routine vaccinations. These communities may experience a range of barriers to vaccination systems, yet there is a need to better explore drivers of under-immunization and vaccine hesitancy in these mobile groups.
METHODS: We did a global rapid review to explore drivers of under-immunization and vaccine hesitancy to define strategies to strengthen both COVID-19 and routine vaccination uptake, searching MEDLINE, Embase, Global He

The World Health Organization acknowledges vaccine hesitancy as one of the ten most serious global health threats. The study investigated the association between confidence, convenience, and complacency and influenza vaccine hesitancy among male and female health workers. The study included 453 workers in primary and medium-complexity health services in a medium-sized city in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Vaccine-hesitant individuals were defined as those who had not received an influenza vaccine in 2019. Structural equation models were used to assess interrelations between target predictive var

Many countries have secured larger quantities of COVID-19 vaccines than their population is willing to take. The abundance and the large variety of vaccines created not only an unprecedented intensity of vaccine related public discourse, but also a historical moment to understand vaccine hesitancy better. Yet, the heterogeneity of hesitancy by vaccine types has been neglected in the existing literature so far. We address this problem by analysing the acceptance and the assessment of five vaccine types. We use information collected with a nationally representative survey at the end of the third

Vaccine hesitancy (VH) has emerged as a recognized threaten to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Historically, low vaccine acceptance rates had been described among patients with rheumatic diseases (RMDs). The study objective was to determine COVID-19 VH among Mexican outpatients with RMDs and validate the COVID-19 VH questionnaire. This cross-sectional study was developed in three steps. Step 1 consisted of translation/cultural adaptation of the Oxford-COVID-19-VH questionnaire. Step 2 consisted of pilot testing and questionnaire feasibility, content, construct and criterion validity, reliabilit

It is widely believed that vaccine hesitancy is prevalent in African countries, although this belief is without rigorous evidence. Our field experiment in rural northern Nigeria behaviorally measured the prevalence of vaccine hesitancy-the non-uptake of vaccines despite their availability due to non-monetary factors directly associated with vaccination. We randomly assigned two tasks to women: answering a short survey at their house vs. additionally receiving a free tetanus vaccine by submitting a voucher. The differences in their completion rates captured vaccine hesitancy, showing the rate t

Voluntary termination of pregnancy (VTP), pre-conception and post-partum phases, as well as Occupational Medicine consultation for healthcare workers are opportunities for screening and vaccinating rubella seronegative childbearing women. However, data about vaccination acceptance following these phases is rarely reported. A retrospective study over a 2-year period (2016-2017) was performed, evaluating the prevalence of rubella seronegative women which underwent VTP (wVTP), mothers in early puerperal phase (mEPP) and childbearing healthcare workers (CbHW) aged 15-49 years. Anti-rubella vaccina

Examining the history of vaccination in the Civil War reveals lessons about why citizens resisted vaccination and how physicians tried to respond to the problems associated with combating epidemic diseases like smallpox. The Confederate government and physicians failed to effectively advocate to the public and collect information in an organized manner, and they suffered failures in getting enough citizens and soldiers vaccinated. Some Confederate physicians like Joseph Jones studied vaccination, but this came after the war, and the Confederate government failed to embrace and combat vaccine h

Men who have sex with men (MSM) have been recommended for targeted monkeypox vaccination. We aimed to investigate monkeypox awareness and explore the correlates of monkeypox vaccination hesitancy among MSM in China. We conducted a cross-sectional survey from August 10 to September 9, 2022. Awareness related to monkeypox and attitude toward monkeypox vaccination among MSM aged ≥18 years were collected. Multivariable logistic regression was applied to evaluate correlates of vaccination hesitancy. The discrepancy in awareness between subgroups regarding HIV status was assessed. A total of 1090 MS

The Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to the development of several candidate vaccines. However, current research suggests that the potential of successful vaccines is tempered by vaccine skepticism or hesitancy. If vaccine efficacy is 80%, then the herd immunity required from vaccination is about 75-90%. The aim of the current study was to study factors impacting COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in a representative sample of adults (age≥18 years) in a COVID-19 hotspotAbbreviations: COVID-19: coronavirus disease-19.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding parental practices and attitudes towards vaccination is important to promote influenza vaccines among in-school children that can mitigate infection and spread of influenza. This study aimed to investigate influenza vaccination uptake, hesitancy and willingness among parents for their in-school children in the post-pandemic era of COVID-19 in South China.
METHODS: In April 2023, a cross-sectional survey was conducted to obtain a convenience sample of 3127 in-school children's parents in Shenzhen, China. Information about demographic characteristics, parent's psycholog

Vaccine-scepticism and vaccine hesitancy are sometimes explained using the Dunning-Kruger effect (DKE), which posits that individuals with low knowledge in relevant domains are overconfident in their understanding. However, prior evidence often relies on discrepancy-based measures of self-overestimation that are susceptible to statistical artefacts. It, therefore, remains unclear whether vaccine-scepticism genuinely reflects the defining features of the DKE. During the Covid-19 pandemic, a large UK sample (n = 537) completed a newly developed Covid-scepticism (CS) scale, with a knowledge test

When effective vaccines are available, vaccination programs are typically one of the best defences against the spread of an infectious disease. Such vaccination programs become particularly important during severe epidemics or pandemics to ensure sufficient vaccination coverage is achieved to increase protection or reduce transmission to a level that enables relaxation of non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as lockdowns, travel restrictions, or social distancing. Unfortunately, vaccination uptake in the community may be slow if there are substantial levels of vaccine hesitancy in the popula

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine hesitancy has emerged as a major challenge for pediatric immunization programs, shaped by a complex interplay of structural, relational, and informational factors. In Latin America, these dynamics are further influenced by health system fragmentation and social inequities, requiring approaches that extend beyond information-based interventions.
AREAS COVERED: This review examines the multidimensional nature of vaccine hesitancy in pediatric populations, with a focus on Latin America. It examines the role of digital environments, clinical communication, and system-level f

This review article summarizes the emergence of vaccine hesitancy in companion animal medicine and its parallels with human health care. Factors influencing pet owner vaccination decisions include concerns about safety, necessity, cost, overvaccination, and misinformation. Current literature suggests veterinarians remain the most trusted source of vaccine information and play a central role in maintaining vaccine confidence. The article reviews available data on companion animal vaccination trends, owner attitudes, and veterinary team perceptions while highlighting communication strategies, in

BACKGROUND: Following UK approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines on 2/12/20 and 30/12/20 respectively, discussions about them emerged on the social media platform Twitter, (now 'X'). Previous research has shown that Twitter/ X is used by the UK public to engage with public health announcements and that social media influences public opinions of vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, globally. This study explored discussions on Twitter posted in response to the UK government's posts introducing the Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines. The aim was to investiga

Vaccine hesitancy became an important topic in the public discourse and academic research during the COVID-19 pandemic, but its history is as long as the history of immunization. One can find the same determinants of vaccine hesitancy, though in variable proportions, since the 1721 Boston smallpox epidemic. We aim to describe several historical immunization moments and analyze them using the vaccine hesitancy framework of the "5Cs" (ie, confidence, complacency, constraints, risk calculation, and collective responsibility).
