Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and sexual risk behavior among female sex workers in nine provinces in Indonesia, 2005.

The objective of this study was to assess the sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence and sexual risk behavior among female sex workers (FSWs) in Indonesia. This cross-sectional 2005 study involved 2500 FSWs in nine provinces in Indonesia. Informed consent was obtained; behavioral and clinical data were collected. Specimens were collected for STI testing, endocervical swabs were tested for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PCR), vaginal smears were cultured to detect Trichomonas vaginalis and sera were tested for syphilis (RPR and TPHA). The prevalence of chlamydial infe

Recapitulating Zika Virus Infection in Vagina of Tree Shrew (Tupaia belangeri).

Sexual transmission of Zika Virus (ZIKV) elevates the risk of its dissemination in the female reproductive tract and causes a serious threat to the fetus. However, the available animal models are not appropriate to investigate sexual transmission, dynamics of ZIKV infection, replication, and shedding. The use of tree shrew as a small animal model of ZIKV vaginal infection was assessed in this study. A total of 23 sexually mature female tree shrews were infected with ZIKV GZ01 via the intravaginal route. There was no significant difference in change of body weight, and the temperature between Z

[Uterine cervix agenesis--uterovaginal anastomosis].

PURPOSE: Atresia of the uterine cervix is an uncommon Mullerian anomaly. Until ten years ago many authors recommended hysterectomy as the first line treatment in case of uterine cervix atresia. Recent advances in reproductive technology and laparoscopic surgical techniques mean that conservative surgery is a possibility and should be considered as the first line treatment option. Surgical treatment of uterine cervical atresia appears to be a good choice of treatment with good functional result. MATERIALS AND METHOLOGY: We report a case of a 19-year-old woman who was admitted to our Department

Sexual and reproductive risk factors for invasive squamous cell cervical cancer.

A case-control study of 418 women with invasive squamous cell cervical cancer and 704 population controls enabled evaluation of risk factors for this relatively rare cancer. Consistent with an infectious etiology was a pronounced effect of multiple sexual partners, with those reporting 10 or more partners being at a significant threefold excess risk. Early first intercourse also was associated with some residual effect on risk, although the relationship was not linear, nor the explanation readily apparent. Those with multiple births were at significantly elevated risks, even after adjustment f

Lower Levels of Cervicovaginal Tryptophan Are Associated With Natural Clearance of Chlamydia in Women.

Chlamydiatrachomatis (Ct) infection causes significant morbidity. In vitro studies demonstrate that Ct growth inhibition occurs by interferon-gamma (IFN-γ)-mediated depletion of intracellular tryptophan, and some Ct strains utilize extracellular indole to restore tryptophan levels. Whether tryptophan levels are associated with Ct infection clearance in humans remains unknown. We evaluated tryptophan, indole, and IFN-γ levels in cervicovaginal lavages from women with either naturally cleared or persisting Ct infection. Women who cleared infection had significantly lower tryptophan levels and tr

Detection of Mycoplasma genitalium-reactive cervicovaginal antibodies among infected women.

Mycoplasma genitalium-reactive cervicovaginal IgA and IgG antibodies were detected in 51.9% and 70.4% of 27 infected women and 22.2% and 18.5% of 27 uninfected controls, respectively. The predominance of MgpB- and MgpC-reactive antibodies at the site of infection is consistent with their hypothesized role in selecting antigenic variants during persistent infection.

Role of female intimate hygiene in vulvovaginal health: Global hygiene practices and product usage.

Women use various feminine hygiene products, often as part of their daily cleansing routine; however, there is a paucity of published medical literature related to the external vulva and how personal hygiene practices can affect it. This review article provides background information on the physiological changes that occur during women's lives and reviews the relevance of transient and resident microbiota as they relate to common vaginal and vulvar disorders. It also discusses the need for female intimate hygiene, common practices of feminine hygiene from a global perspective, and the potentia

Intravaginal practices, bacterial vaginosis, and women's susceptibility to HIV infection: epidemiological evidence and biological mechanisms.

Intravaginal practices such as "dry sex" and douching have been suggested as a risk factor that may increase women's susceptibility to HIV infection. These behaviours appear common in different populations across sub-Saharan Africa, where practices include the use of antiseptic preparations, traditional medicines, or the insertion of fingers or cloths into the vagina. We systematically review the evidence for the association between women's intravaginal practices and HIV infection. Although a number of cross-sectional studies have shown that prevalent HIV infection is more common among women r

History of anaesthesia: early forms of local anaesthesia.

The direct application of volatile anaesthetic and the application of intense cold to traumatic injuries and surgical sites were important steps in 18th and 19th century anaesthesia. Local tissue temperature could be brought down by the application of ice and salt by the surgeon. Techniques used topical applications of chloroform, Dutch Oil, amyl hydrate, the vaporisation of nebulised ether, methylene and ethylene chloride applied by spray or fumigation and vaginal douche with carbonic acid gas. Mastering the projection of cold was extremely difficult. Keeping the aperture of the device used f

Effects of bacterial vaginosis and other genital infections on the natural history of human papillomavirus infection in HIV-1-infected and high-risk HIV-1-uninfected women.

BACKGROUND: Whether the natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is affected by bacterial vaginosis (BV) or Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) infection has not been adequately investigated in prospective studies. METHODS: Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1)-infected (n=1763) and high-risk HIV-1-uninfected (n=493) women were assessed semiannually for BV (by Nugent's criteria), TV infection (by wet mount), type-specific HPV (by polymerase chain reaction with MY09/MY11/HMB01 HPV primers), and squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) (by cytological examination). Sexual history was obtai

A review on pelvic inflammatory disease.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) remains a significant cause of morbidity worldwide, with the potential to result in serious reproductive complications. Much of the definitive work regarding PID was completed in the 1960s and 1970s. More recently, however, there have been a range of studies published that have contributed to our understanding of PID. Aetiologically, the main pathogens are chlamydia and gonorrhoea, but may include Mycoplasma genitalium and anaerobic Gram-negative rods. Risk factors associated with the development of PID include inconsistent barrier contraception, possibly vagi

Resistance to type 1 interferons is a major determinant of HIV-1 transmission fitness.

Sexual transmission of HIV-1 is an inefficient process, with only one or few variants of the donor quasispecies establishing the new infection. A critical, and as yet unresolved, question is whether the mucosal bottleneck selects for viruses with increased transmission fitness. Here, we characterized 300 limiting dilution-derived virus isolates from the plasma, and in some instances genital secretions, of eight HIV-1 donor and recipient pairs. Although there were no differences in the amount of virion-associated envelope glycoprotein, recipient isolates were on average threefold more infectiou
