A case of a vaginal Brenner tumor without a gland mimicking a borderline tumor: unusual morphology and diagnostic pitfalls.

Brenner tumor is a rare neoplasm of the vagina. This tumor is diagnosed according to the criteria of ovarian tumors. We report here a 64-year-old postmenopausal woman with a 2.0-cm sessile vaginal polyp for 9 years. Microscopic examination showed unusual features of no gland appearing in the tumor, but the other two characteristic components of transitional islands and dense fibrous stroma were observed. The tumor was diagnosed as a vaginal Brenner tumor on the basis of the definition proposed by the World Health Organization classification of female reproductive organ tumors. In our case, par

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma involving the vagina and a pre-existing uterine leiomyoma.

Lymphomas involving the female genital tract are uncommon, and vaginal involvement is particularly rare. In addition, the involvement of a pre-existing uterine leiomyoma by lymphoma appears unusual. Herein, we report the case of a woman in her sixties who presented with abnormal genital bleeding. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging revealed a newly developed submucosal mass in the posterior vaginal wall and a previously known posterior uterine wall leiomyoma containing a newly emerged area of marked restricted diffusion. Both lesions showed relatively homogeneous internal signal characteristics

A Case of Primary Malignant Mixed Mesonephric Tumor of the Vagina.

Mesonephric adenocarcinoma is a clinically aggressive, rare malignant neoplasm characterized by mesonephric (Wolffian) differentiation. It can occur throughout the female genital tract; however, most cases arise in the uterine cervix. Vaginal mesonephric adenocarcinoma is uncommon, and cases with a concomitant sarcomatous component are extremely rare. Using appropriate immunohistochemistry, we present a rare case of a primary malignant mixed mesonephric tumor of the vagina, defined by biphasic epithelial and mesenchymal malignant components of mesonephric origin. The patient was a 34-year-old

A rare case report of uterine carcinosarcoma with bilateral ovarian Brenner tumors.

BACKGROUND: Uterine carcinosarcoma is a rare, highly aggressive malignancy characterized by both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. Brenner tumors of the ovary are uncommon epithelial neoplasms, usually benign but occasionally coexisting with other pathologies. The co-occurrence of these two entities is extremely rare and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. METHODS: We report a case of a 58-year-old female presenting with scant yellowish vaginal discharge. Imaging studies revealed an intrauterine mass. Histopathological analysis of curettage specimens confirmed endometrial mal

Synchronous gynecologic cancer and the use of imaging for diagnosis.

Endometrial and cervical cancers are the most prevalent gynecologic neoplasms. While endometrial cancer occurs in older women, cervical cancer is more prevalente in young subjects. The most common clinical manifestation in these two gynecological cancers is vaginal bleeding. In the first case, diagnosis is made based on histological and imaging evaluation of the endometrium, while cervical cancers are diagnosed clinically, according to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO). The authors present a case of synchronous gynecological cancer of the endometrium and cervix d

Uterine sarcomas: review of 26 years at The Instituto Nacional de Cancerologia of Mexico.

UNLABELLED: Uterine sarcomas are a group of uncommon tumors that account for approximately 1% of malignant neoplasms of the female genital tract and between 3 and 8.4% of malignant uterine neoplasms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the factors associated with the clinical behavior of uterine sarcomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the period from October 1983 to December 2009, clinical files of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of uterine sarcoma at the National Institute of Cancerology of Mexico (INCan) were reviewed and evaluated. RESULTS: We identified 77 cases with complete information; average ag

Myogenin expression in vulvovaginal spindle cell lesions: analysis of a series of cases with an emphasis on diagnostic pitfalls.

AIMS: Myogenin (myf4) is a nuclear transcription factor that is considered to be a sensitive and highly specific marker for skeletal muscle differentiation. Following the identification of focal strong nuclear staining with myogenin in two fibroepithelial polyps of the lower female genital tract (the index cases), we stained a series of vulvovaginal spindle cell lesions with this marker in order to investigate how widespread myogenin staining is in these lesions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fibroepithelial polyps (n = 13), other vulvovaginal mesenchymal lesions (n = 21) and vulval or vaginal spindle

Correlation of histology with human papillomavirus DNA detection in the female genital tract.

Genital condyloma and intraepithelial neoplasia secondary to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection are characterized by perinuclear halos and marked nuclear atypia (koilocytotic atypia) on cytologic and histologic examination. However, at times the histologic findings, including the degree of nuclear atypia, may be suggestive but not absolutely diagnostic of an HPV related neoplasm. HPV DNA sequences were detected in 63 and 56% of colposcopically visible vaginal and cervical lesions, respectively, that were diagnosed as condyloma or intraepithelial neoplasia. HPV DNA sequences were detected in

Primary vaginal cancer after hysterectomy for benign conditions: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary vaginal cancer is a rare condition. Some studies have revealed an increased risk of vaginal cancer among patients who have undergone hysterectomy for premalignant and malignant cervical disease. However, there is limited literature available on primary vaginal cancer following hysterectomy for benign conditions. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to investigate available evidence on clinical characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of primary vaginal cancer following hysterectomy for benign diseases. Additionally, we provide a case of a patient who developed primary vaginal ca

A novel curcumin-based vaginal cream Vacurin selectively eliminates apposed human cervical cancer cells.

OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide. In the U.S. strategies via screening and vaccination prevent HPV-associated cervical neoplasms, but consume immense healthcare costs. The spice component curcumin has potent anticancer and antiviral properties, which have been difficult to harness as a treatment, due to its poor systemic bioavailability. This project tests the possibility of developing a curcumin-based therapy for cervical cancer. METHODS: Using four HPV(+) cervical cancer cell lines and normal fibroblasts we first tested the selec

Uterine tumor resembling ovarian sex cord tumor. Case report and review of literature.

A uterine tumor resembling an ovarian sex cord tumor (UTROSCT) shows a poly phenotypic immunophenotype with coexpression of epithelial, myoid, and sex cord markers, as well as hormone receptors. The authors present a case of a 59-year-old multiparous woman admitted to the Institute of Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinical Centre of Serbia in January 2010 due to prolonged vaginal bleeding and abdominal discomfort. The vaginal ultrasound showed an enlarged uterus size of 100 x 74 x 81 mm, with extended cavity with an unhomogenic content and myomas sized 54 x 69 mm located in fundus with secondary c

Glassy cell carcinoma arising in the vagina.

Glassy cell carcinoma is a rare neoplasm that occurs most frequently in the uterine cervix. We describe the first reported case of glassy cell carcinoma arising in the vagina. A 77-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital for atypical genital bleeding. Gynecological examination revealed a macroscopic vaginal cancer of 1.5 cm in diameter located in the upper 1/3 of the vagina. The pathological diagnosis of the biopsied specimen was glassy cell carcinoma. She was successfully treated by conventional radiation therapy and chemotherapy under the diagnosis of stage I vaginal cancer (Int

Characterization and Genome Analysis of the Delftia lacustris Strain LzhVag01 Isolated from Vaginal Discharge.

Delftia has been separated from freshwater, sludge, and soil and has emerged as a novel opportunistic pathogen in the female vagina. However, the genomic characteristics, pathogenicity, and biotechnological properties still need to be comprehensively investigated. In this study, a Delftia strain was isolated from the vaginal discharge of a 43-year-old female with histologically confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN III), followed by whole-genome sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis and average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis demonstrated that it belongs to Delftia lacustris, named D

Cytology of primary vaginal melanoma: An unusual report on fine needle aspiration.

Primary malignant melanoma of the vagina is an extremely uncommon malignancy comprising of less than 10% malignancies of the female genital tract and 0.3% of all melanomas. Melanoblasts are neural crest derivatives and are notorious for causing primary cutaneous neoplasms. However, they involve virtually every organ of the body including eye, intestines and ocular mucosa, probably due to aberrancies in cell migration. Vagina is a rare site and primary melanoma of the vagina occurs in postmenopausal women with vaginal discharge, bleeding, or mass as common presenting complaints. Only a handful

Prepubertal vaginal bleeding caused by a vaginal foreign body: Diagnostic challenges and forensic implications.

INTRODUCTION: Vaginal bleeding in prepubertal girls merits thorough investigation, as it is always pathological and its etiology is broad and includes inflammatory conditions, endocrine disorders, local irritation from a foreign body, neoplasms, injuries, and sexual abuse. The diagnostic approach used should be immediate, systematic, and multidisciplinary. CASE: We present the case of a 7-year-old girl who was admitted to a tertiary pediatric hospital with a history of prolonged vaginal bleeding. During the clinical, pediatric, and forensic investigation, the presence of a foreign body within

High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm: case report.

High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is an extremely rare gastrointestinal tumour with nonspecific clinical manifestations that complicate preoperative diagnosis. In women, it may mimic gynecological diseases, particularly ovarian tumours, leading to diagnostic delays and inappropriate surgical approaches. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman from the San Martín region of Peru who presented with abdominal pain, progressive distension, and abnormal vaginal bleeding. Laboratory tests showed elevated carcinoembryonic antigen levels, while transvaginal ultrasound revealed a right adnexal

Glomus tumor presenting as a periurethral mass.

OBJECTIVES: Glomus tumors, a neoplasm arising from the glomus body, usually occur in the extremities with a particular predisposition to a subungual site. Glomus tumors are exceedingly rare in the external genitalia. In this case, the origin of a periurethral mass proved to be a glomus tumor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 61-year-old woman presented with postmenopausal vaginal bleeding. Clinical examination revealed a focally ulcerating, soft periurethral mass. A subsequent wedge biopsy of a periurethral, submucosal tumor was examined microscopically using both hematoxylin and eosin stains and an
