The effect of a pre-meal snack and/or postprandial exercise on breakfast glycemic excursion in adults with cystic fibrosis: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cystic fibrosis (CF)-related diabetes (CFRD), a common comorbidity in CF, is often preceded and characterized with elevated postprandial glycemic (PPG) excursions. In the general population, the consumption of a pre-meal protein snack and/or physical activity (PA) hinder the elevation of PPG levels. Our objective is to evaluate the effect of a pre-meal snack and/or post-meal PA on PPG excursions in CF. METHODS: This is a double-blinded randomized controlled crossover interventional study in 14 adults with CF, with 4 interventions: placebo pre-meal snack + no PA (control: CT

Repeated Binge-Like Alcohol Intoxication: Depot-Specific Adipose Tissue Immuno-Metabolic Dysregulation.

Repeated binge-like alcohol intoxication (RBAI) induces whole-body insulin resistance, which is predicted to increase the risk for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Previously, we showed that acute alcohol intoxication increases mesenteric lymphatic permeability, perilymphatic adipose tissue (PLAT) inflammation, and circulating lipopolysaccharide levels in rats. We hypothesize that mesenteric lymphatic hyperpermeability, adipose tissue inflammation and associated dysregulated adipokine expression, and insulin signaling are central mechanisms underlying whole-body metabolic dysregulation

Effects of soy milk ingestion immediately after resistance training on muscular-related biomarkers in older men: a randomized controlled trial.

We evaluated the effects of soy milk ingestion on changes in body composition, strength, power, and muscular-related biomarkers following 12 weeks of resistance training in older men. Thirty healthy older men (age = 65.63 ± 3.16 years; body mass = 62.63 ± 3.86 kg) were randomly assigned to one of two groups: soy milk + resistance training (SR) or placebo + resistance training (PR). Participants in the SR group received 240 ml of vanilla-flavoured non-dairy soy milk immediately after every training session and at the same time on non-training days. Differences in muscle mass, upper limb body st

Evidence from an fMRI study that dessert-flavored e-cigarettes engage taste-related, but not smoking-related, brain circuitry for female daily smokers.

Regulations limiting the sale of flavored e-cigarette products are controversial for their potential to interfere with e-cigarette use as a cessation aid in addition to curbing youth use. Limited research suggests that flavor might enhance the addictive potential of e-cigarettes; however, the acute effects of flavored aerosols on brain function among humans have not been assessed. The present study aimed to isolate and compare the neural substrates of flavored and unflavored e-cigarette aerosols on brain function among nine female daily smokers. Participants inhaled aerosolized e-liquid with 3

Accelerated muscle mass estimation from CT images through transfer learning.

BACKGROUND: The cost of labeling to collect training data sets using deep learning is especially high in medical applications compared to other fields. Furthermore, due to variances in images depending on the computed tomography (CT) devices, a deep learning based segmentation model trained with a certain device often does not work with images from a different device. METHODS: In this study, we propose an efficient learning strategy for deep learning models in medical image segmentation. We aim to overcome the difficulties of segmentation in CT images by training a VNet segmentation model whi

Morphine sensitization as a model of mania: comparative study of the effects of repeated lithium or carbamazepine administration.

Repeated unavoidable stress induces in rats decreased reactivity to avoidable stressors and an anhedonia-like condition that are reverted by long-term antidepressant treatments and regarded as models of core symptoms of depression. Morphine-sensitized rats present resilience to stress-induced behavioral deficits and, if hyporeactivity to stress models a depressive symptom, stress resistance can be regarded as a manic symptom. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that long-term lithium administration reinstates sensitivity to stress in sensitized rats. The first aim of the study was

Vanillin prevents the growth of endometriotic lesions through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant pathways in a mouse model.

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent chronic inflammatory gynecological disease defined by the presence of endometrial glands and mesenchyme outside the uterine cavity, named ectopic endometrium. Recent studies showed that endometriosis is associated with hormone imbalance, inflammation and oxidative stress. As the main component of vanilla bean extract, vanillin is widely used as a flavoring agent in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. It is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antitumor properties, but its therapeutic efficacy in endometriosis has not been stu

Machine learning approaches in GIS-based ecological modeling of the sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi, a vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Golestan province, Iran.

The distribution and abundance of Phlebotomus papatasi, the primary vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in most semi-/arid countries, is a major public health challenge. This study compares several approaches to model the spatial distribution of the species in an endemic region of the disease in Golestan province, northeast of Iran. The intent is to assist decision makers for targeted interventions. We developed a geo-database of the collected Phlebotominae sand flies from different parts of the study region. Sticky paper traps coated with castor oil were used to collect sand flies. In

Automatic identification of Parkinsonism using clinical multi-contrast brain MRI: a large self-supervised vision foundation model strategy.

BACKGROUND: Valid non-invasive biomarkers for Parkinson's disease (PD) and Parkinson-plus syndrome (PPS) are urgently needed. Based on our recent self-supervised vision foundation model the Shift Window UNET TRansformer (Swin UNETR), which uses clinical multi-contrast whole brain MRI, we aimed to develop an efficient and practical model ('SwinClassifier') for the discrimination of PD vs PPS using routine clinical MRI scans. METHODS: We used 75,861 clinical head MRI scans including T1-weighted, T2-weighted and fluid attenuated inversion recovery imaging as a pre-training dataset to develop a f

Multi-Scale Residual Gated Attention U-Net for Liver Tumor Segmentation.

Accurate early diagnosis and treatment planning of liver cancer relies on precise liver and tumor segmentation in medical images. However, liver tumor segmentation faces complex anatomical structures, large lesion scale differences, and fuzzy lesion boundaries. Vanilla U-Net has three inherent structural drawbacks: inadequate cross-scale feature interaction in the encoder, semantic mismatch in skip connections, and insufficient multi-scale feature aggregation in the decoder. Therefore, this paper proposes a Multi-scale Residual Gated Attention U-Net (MRGA-UNet) for liver tumor segmentation. Th

Diet-derived nutrients modulate the effects of amylin on c-Fos expression in the area postrema and on food intake.

The pancreatic hormone amylin decreases food intake via activation of area postrema (AP) neurons. We investigated whether amylin's potency to reduce food intake and to induce c-Fos expression in the AP/nucleus of the solitary tract region is affected by the feeding conditions and specifically by the macronutrient composition of the diet. Whereas a low dose of amylin (5 microg/kg s.c.) induced very little c-Fos expression in ad libitum chow fed rats, it caused a strong c-Fos expression in 24-hour food-deprived rats and in rats that received a nutrient-deficient non-caloric mash (NCM; vanilla-fl

Chocolate intake and muscle pain sensation: A randomized experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Chocolate, as a cocoa-derived product rich in flavanols, has been used for medical and anti-inflammatory purposes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate if the ingestion of different percentages of cocoa products affects the experimentally induced pain caused by intramuscular hypertonic saline injections in the masseter muscle of healthy men and women. METHODS: This experimental randomized, double-blind, and controlled study included 15 young, healthy, and pain-free men and 15 age-matched women and involved three visits with at least a 1-week washout. Pain was induce

Effects of 5 aminolevulinic acid on fruit quality and volatile metabolites of Meizao sweet cherry.

5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is an endogenous amino acid and a precursor of chlorophyll synthesis. Studies have shown that it can promote fruit development and improve quality characteristics such as sweetness, acidity, and flavor. Therefore, in this study, 'Meizao' sweet cherry trees were used as test materials, and different concentrations of 5-ALA (50, 100, 150 mg/L) were sprayed during the fruit expansion period to determine their effects on fruit quality. Based on principal component analysis, the fruit quality under 5-ALA treatment was comprehensively evaluated, and the best concentrati

Feature fusion Siamese network for breast cancer detection comparing current and prior mammograms.

PURPOSE: Automatic detection of very small and nonmass abnormalities from mammogram images has remained challenging. In clinical practice for each patient, radiologists commonly not only screen the mammogram images obtained during the examination, but also compare them with previous mammogram images to make a clinical decision. To design an artificial intelligence (AI) system to mimic radiologists for better cancer detection, in this work we proposed an end-to-end enhanced Siamese convolutional neural network to detect breast cancer using previous year and current year mammogram images. SimBinder-IF: Structure-Aware Antibody Affinity Optimization via Efficient Preference Learning.

MOTIVATION: Antibody therapeutic efficacy depends on high-affinity target engagement, yet laboratory affinity maturation is slow and costly. Most protein language models (PLMs) lack explicit training for high affinity, and current preference optimization methods introduce computational overhead without clear affinity improvements. Therefore, structure-aware and parameter-efficient approaches for antibody affinity optimization are urgently needed. RESULTS: We propose SimBinder-IF, a structure-aware antibody optimization model trained by freezing the Evolutionary Scale Modeling inverse folding

FSCL-BC: Federated supervised contrastive learning for breast cancer diagnosis with high sensitivity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate diagnosis of breast cancer in dense breasts requires expert radiologists to examine multiple ultrasound images per patient. This diagnosis procedure is tedious, time-consuming, and prone to misdiagnosis due to human fatigue. AI-aided diagnosis systems can help alleviate this burden. However, vast amounts of data from multiple hospitals, diverse patient demographics, imaging scanners, and protocols are required to develop accurate, robust, and generalizable AI models. Obtaining such a mixture of data is quite challenging due to privacy concerns, data ownership
