Periodontitis Is Associated With Arterial Stiffness as Measured by Serial Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index (CAVI): A 10-Year Cohort Study.

AIM: To investigate the effect of periodontitis on the long-term changes of the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 10-year retrospective cohort study of 3842 Thai participants (range 25-76 years) with normal CAVI at the study initiation was undertaken. Full-mouth periodontal examination was performed by calibrated periodontists, and the extent and severity of periodontitis were determined at 5-year intervals. Serial CAVI measurements were used to examine the incidence of high CAVI (≥ 9.0) and changes in CAVI over time (ΔCAVI). RESULTS: Participants with a higher ext

Prediction of blood pressure changes during surgical incision using the minimum evoked current of vascular stiffness value under sevoflurane anesthesia.

Necessary and sufficient opioids should be administered for safe and stable anesthesia. However, opioid sensitivity varies among individuals. We previously reported that sympathetic responses to nociceptive stimuli under propofol anesthesia could be predicted by measuring the minimum evoked current of the vascular stiffness value (MECK). However, this result has only been proven under propofol anesthesia. We propose that MECK could be used under anesthesia with a volatile anesthetic. Thirty patients undergoing laparotomy with sevoflurane anesthesia received 0.7 minimum alveolar concentration (

Arterial stiffness determined according to the cardio-ankle vascular index is associated with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Several lines of evidence suggest that atrial fibrillation (AF) may be a consequence of vascular disease. We investigated the relationship between cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), a new index of arterial stiffness, and the presence of paroxysmal AF (PAF). METHODS AND RESULTS: 181 outpatients (91 patients with PAF and 90 age- and gender-matched subjects without PAF) were analysed for their sinus rhythm. The CAVI was significantly higher in patients with PAF than in subjects without PAF (9.0±1.0 vs 8.7±0.8, p<0.01). In all subjects, the CAVI was significantly correlated with the

Elevated Markers of Vascular Remodeling and Arterial Stiffness Are Associated With Neurocognitive Function in Older HIV+ Adults on Suppressive Antiretroviral Therapy.

BACKGROUND: HIV is associated with elevated markers of vascular remodeling that may contribute to arterial fibrosis and stiffening and changes in pulse pressure (PP). These changes may, in turn, deleteriously affect autoregulation of cerebral blood flow and neurocognitive function. METHODS: To evaluate these mechanisms, we studied markers of vascular remodeling, PP, and neurocognitive function among older (≥50 years of age) HIV-infected (HIV+, n = 72) and HIV-seronegative (HIV-, n = 36) adults. Participants completed standardized neurobehavioral and neuromedical assessments. Neurocognitive fu

Detection of increased arterial stiffness in a patient with early stage of large vessel vasculitis by measuring cardio-ankle vascular index.

Large vessel vasculitis leads to arterial wall thickening and stiffening because of chronic inflammatory changes. The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is recently utilized for assessing arterial stiffening caused by atherosclerosis-related diseases, including hypertension and diabetes, as well as aging. CAVI is mathematically calculated from stiffness index beta, which is established as a parameter of arterial stiffness independent of blood pressure. However, there are no data regarding arterial stiffness assessed by CAVI for large vessel vasculitis. We describe a patient with large vessel v

Improved assessment of arterial stiffness using corrected cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI0) in overweight adolescents with white-coat and essential hypertension.

Arterial stiffness is a marker of vascular damage. Although adiposity increases cardiovascular risk, the relationship between paediatric overweight and arterial stiffness is unclear. The study aimed to evaluate the simultaneous effect of hypertension and overweight on arterial stiffness using cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and related novel, theoretically blood pressure (BP)-independent, index CAVI0. CAVI and CAVI0 were measured in 140 adolescent boys (16.0 ± 1.9 years) divided into age-matched groups: normal-weight normotensives, overweight normotensives, overweight white-coat hypertensiv

Age-associated increase in arterial stiffness measured according to the cardio-ankle vascular index without blood pressure changes in healthy adults.

AIM: The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) reflects arterial stiffness from the aorta to the ankle, independent of blood pressure (BP). We investigated the age-stratified CAVI in healthy, normotensive individuals to evaluate the effects of age on arterial stiffness. METHODS: The CAVI and peripheral BP were determined in healthy, normotensive Koreans 20 to 79 years of age. The subjects had no history of cardiovascular disease and did not take any medications for hypertension, diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia (N = 1,380; 44.1% in men). RESULTS: The mean systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastol

Variability in Arterial Stiffness and Vascular Endothelial Function After COVID-19 During 1.5 Years of Follow-Up-Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Increasing long-term observations suggest that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vasculopathy may persist even 1.5 years after the acute phase, potentially accelerating the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. This study systematically reviewed the variability of brachial flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) from the acute phase of COVID-19 through 16 months of follow-up (F/U). Databases including PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and Embase were screened for a meta-analysis without language or date restrictions (PROSPERO reference CR

Arterial Stiffness, Assessed Using the Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index, before and 2 Years after Total Knee Arthroplasty in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis.

Purpose: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major risk factor for mortality in patients with osteoarthritis, and such comorbidities increase the risk of postoperative complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Arteriosclerosis plays a major role in hemodynamic dysfunction and CVD; however, the postoperative changes in arteriosclerosis following TKA have not been evaluated. Therefore, we assessed the postoperative changes in arteriosclerosis using the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) in patients undergoing TKA, and its relationships with preoperative patient characteristics. A randomized control trial to assess the impact of vitamin D supplementation compared to placebo on vascular stiffness in chronic kidney disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular (CV) risk in multiple populations, including those with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The active form of the hormone (1,25 OH2D3) binds to receptors in multiple organs. CKD patients are deficient in both 25 Vitamin D and 1,25 OH2D3. Clinical trial data demonstrating the benefits of vitamin D formulations are limited, and fail to show significant benefits on CV outcomes, and have compared different compounds, in various populations, and focused on a variety of outcomes. A understanding of the mechanism by which different vitamin
