Indirect impact of COVID-19 on the incidence rates of vector-borne diseases in Mexico.

INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 infection spatial and temporal distribution overlaps with endemic areas of vector-borne diseases (VBD), whose surveillance in Mexico has substantially changed since the first COVID-19 confirmed case. OBJECTIVES: To estimate and compare the incidence rates of VBDs before and after the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in Mexico. METHODS: Retrospective study of VBD cases from 2014 to 2021. The incidence rates of each VBD in the period before (2014-2019) and after (2020-2021) the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in Mexico were calculated and compared. RESULTS: Before the introducti

Transdisciplinary and social-ecological health frameworks-Novel approaches to emerging parasitic and vector-borne diseases.

Ecosystem Health, Conservation Medicine, EcoHealth, One Health, Planetary Health and GeoHealth are inter-related disciplines that underpin a shared understanding of the functional prerequisites of health, sustainable vitality and wellbeing. All of these are based on recognition that health interconnects species across the planet, and they offer ways to more effectively tackle complex real-world challenges. Herein we present a bibliometric analysis to document usage of a subset of such terms by journals over time. We also provide examples of parasitic and vector-borne diseases, including malari

Parasites and vector-borne diseases in client-owned dogs in Albania: infestation with arthropod ectoparasites.

To establish the diversity and seasonality of ectoparasite infestation in client-owned dogs in Albania, 602 dogs visiting four small animal clinics in Tirana from March 2010 to April 2011 inclusive were examined for ectoparasites by full body search and total body comb. In addition, ear swab specimens collected from all dogs and scrapings taken from skin lesions suspicious of mite infestation were examined for parasitic mites. Overall, 93 dogs (15.4 %, 95%CI 12.6-18.6) were demonstrated to be infested, and nine species of ectoparasites were identified: Ixodes ricinus, 0.8 %; Rhipicephalus sang

Pre-travel advice concerning vector-borne diseases received by travelers prior to visiting Cuzco, Peru.

Peru is an increasingly popular tourist destination that poses a risk to travelers due to endemic vector-borne diseases (VBDs). The objective of our study was to determine which factors are associated with receiving pre-travel advice (PTA) for VBDs among travelers visiting Cuzco, Peru. A cross-sectional secondary analysis based on data from a survey among travelers departing Cuzco at Alejandro Velazco Astete International Airport during the period January-March 2012 was conducted. From the 1819 travelers included in the original study, 1717 were included in secondary data analysis. Of these pa

Legal aspects of public health: difficulties in controlling vector-borne and zoonotic diseases in Brazil.

In recent years, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases have become a major challenge for public health. Dengue fever and leptospirosis are the most important communicable diseases in Brazil based on their prevalence and the healthy life years lost from disability. The primary strategy for preventing human exposure to these diseases is effective insect and rodent control in and around the home. However, health authorities have difficulties in controlling vector-borne and zoonotic diseases because residents often refuse access to their homes. This study discusses aspects related to the activities p

Weather, host and vector--their interplay in the spread of insect-borne animal virus diseases.

The spread of insect-borne animal virus diseases is influenced by a number of factors. Hosts migrate, move or are conveyed over long distances: vectors are carried on the wind for varying distances in search of hosts and breeding sites; weather and climate affect hosts and vectors through temperature, moisture and wind. As parasites of host and vector, viruses are carried by animals, birds and insects, and their spread can be correlated with the migration of hosts and the carriage of vectors on winds associated with the movements of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and warm winds to t

Some applications of bloodmeal identifications in relation to the epidemiology of vector-borne tropical diseases.

No attempt has been made to give a complete review of the value of bloodmeal identifications of haematophagous arthropods in relation to the epidemiology of disease but rather to choose certain topics of current interest. A brief review of the current techniques for bloodmeal identification is given with particular reference to recent studies on mosquitoes and sandflies using the haemagglutination inhibition test. New data on mixed feeding by Anopheles gambiae (a mixture of species B and C) collected in Ethiopia confirm the earlier work with A. sacharovi that interrupted feeding is important.

Pathogens, reservoirs, and vectors involved in the transmission of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases in a Colombian region.

The ecology of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) is an important system of great complexity, which involves the knowledge about the pathogens and animal species entailed in maintaining transmission cycles in a given locality, including those that act as vectors and reservoirs for the transmitted pathogens. To understand the ecology of some VBDs, we studied vectors, reservoirs, and pathogens of different VBDs, including dengue, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, malaria, Zika, and chikungunya in the municipality of La Mesa, Cundinamarca, Colombia, a locality close to the capital, Bogotá. Vectors and mam

Putting behaviors into context for vector-borne diseases: Examining behaviors that may reduce exposure to disease vectors.

Understanding why people adopt or ignore vector-borne disease (VBD) preventive measures is key to better risk assessment and control. However, little is known about why some households adopt preventive practices while others do not, which is particularly striking in this era of One Health's attention to human, environmental, and animal health. We examined what household factors are linked to practices that may reduce exposure to disease vectors, with a focus on Chagas disease (CD) and American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) vectors. We surveyed 204 households in 12 rural communities in Coclé Pr

Improvement to East African style experimental huts allows for more effective evaluation of vector control products for protection against vector-borne diseases.

BACKGROUND: East African style experimental huts have been used in Tanzania since 1963 to evaluate vector control interventions such as insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying. Over time, these huts have been modified to include eave baffles to minimise mosquito escape. In this study, we evaluated the impact of increasing baffle size and using netting to funnel mosquito entry into the room and prevent escape. We also explored mosquito entry behaviour using a sticky trap positioned on the hut exterior to determine if this behaviour could be leveraged for vector control. METHODS:

Early Detection of Asymptomatic Human Infections in Vector-Borne Diseases: A Programmatic Model for Enhanced Surveillance.

Global control strategies for vector-borne diseases (VBDs) remain largely anchored in the detection and management of symptomatic cases, despite substantial evidence that a considerable proportion of infections-often exceeding 60% in several major arboviral diseases-are asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic. These asymptomatic human reservoirs can sustain low-level pathogen circulation during interepidemic periods and may amplify transmission once ecological, immunological, or entomological thresholds are crossed. Because vector-dependent transmission is shaped by environmental variability, ve

Vector-borne diseases and their role in COVID-19 dynamics and death rates: focus on India.

As one of the most significant global health emergencies, COVID-19 has placed extraordinary demands on healthcare systems worldwide. In India, its widespread transmission has been influenced by the country's diverse climatic conditions, geo-ecological complexity, and dense population. This, vector-borne diseases (VBDs)-including malaria, dengue, kala azar, Japanese encephalitis, and chikungunya-have long posed additional challenges to public health infrastructure. Intriguingly, prior exposure to these diseases may shape immune responses, potentially conferring cross-protection against multiple

Impact of Climate Change on the Global Dynamics of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Climate change has significantly altered the dynamics of vector-borne infectious diseases, favoring their proliferation and geographic expansion. Factors such as rising temperatures, the frequency of extreme weather events, and uncontrolled urbanization have increased the incidence of diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, malaria, and Lyme disease, especially in vulnerable regions with limited infrastructure. This article presents a narrative review based on recent scientific literature (2018-2025) to assess the impact of climate change on vector distribution, co-infections, and control

Reservoir host community and vector density predict human tick-borne diseases across the Eastern United States.

Tick-borne disease (TBD) incidence is rising globally, underscoring the need for prevention strategies that consider ecological drivers of transmission. We analyzed associations between human reported cases of four TBDs and ecological and climatic factors across 24 eastern U.S. counties. Mean reported cases per 100,000 people were 0.0274 for Lyme disease, 0.0045 for anaplasmosis, 0.0012 for ehrlichiosis, and 0.0005 for babesiosis. Babesiosis was negatively associated with mean annual temperature, whereas ehrlichiosis increased with nymphal tick density. Anaplasmosis was positively linked to ti
