Effects of Noncontingent Social Interaction on Immediate and Subsequent Engagement in Vocal and Motor Stereotypy in Children With Autism.

This study evaluated the effects of noncontingent social interaction (SI) on immediate and subsequent engagement in vocal and motor stereotypy in three children with autism. During SI, a therapist delivered continuous interaction in the form of reading aloud from a Kindle™ e-reader. Results showed that when compared with a no-interaction baseline sequence, SI decreased immediate engagement vocal stereotypy for all three participants without increasing subsequent engagement for any participant. Furthermore, SI also increased immediate engagement in motor stereotypy for one participant, decrease

Guidelines for treatment of chronic depression in the aphasic patient.

This article defines the language disorder of aphasia and the motor speech disorders of apraxia of speech and the dysarthrias. Discussion includes depression and the five definable sets of behaviors related to the phenomenon: motor-expressive behaviors, affective, cognitive, motivational, and somatic, and the relationship of self-concept to both depression and visual and verbal thought. Detailed discussion of treatment of chronic depression inpatients with non-organic reactive factors is presented. These include positive reinforcement of desirable behaviors, avoidance of verbal punishment, lab

Phonological and Semantic Fluency in Alzheimer's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Semantic and Phonological fluency (SF and PF) are routinely evaluated in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). There are disagreements in the literature regarding which fluency task is more affected while developing AD. Most studies focus on SF assessment, given its connection with the temporoparietal amnesic system. PF is less reported, it is related to working memory, which is also impaired in probable and diagnosed AD. Differentiating between performance on these tasks might be informative in early AD diagnosis, providing an accurate linguistic profile. OBJECTIVE: Compare SF

Dealing with verbal abuse.

In the recent report by the Health and Safety Commission (HSC 1987) into violence in the Health Service, the group of staff who were identified as being most at risk, were student nurses. The highest incidence of aggression reported was verbal abuse, and in a 12-month-period 4 out of 10 students who responded to the study had experienced such abuse. Student nurses are in a very vulnerable position and are likely to be the recipients of verbal attack, such as anger, hostility or abuse. This vulnerability may be due to their front line position, their lack of skill and experience, or more often

Occurrence of glottal stops in fluent speech.

The use of glottal stops in continuous speech in American English has not been well studied, in spite of the common belief that they may serve as boundary markers. This paper reports the result from measurements of five speakers' readings of four stories, each arranged in both list and story form. Data were analyzed according to the difference in speakers, materials, versions, phonological situations (phoneme sequence and stress situations), grammatical conditions, and frequency of occurrence of words. Results show that higher-level factors such as speaker's reading style and difficulty of mat

Naming, the formation of stimulus classes, and applied behavior analysis.

The methods used in Sidman's original studies on equivalence classes provide a framework for analyzing functional verbal behavior. Sidman and others have shown how teaching receptive, name-referent matching may produce rudimentary oral reading and word comprehension skills. Eikeseth and Smith (1992) have extended these findings by showing that children with autism may acquire equivalence classes after learning to supply a common oral name to each stimulus in a potential class. A stimulus class analysis suggests ways to examine (a) the problem of programming generalization from teaching situati

Resident behavior and staff distress in the nursing home.

Newly enacted Federal regulations have focused increasing attention on the use of psychoactive drugs and on the treatment of disruptive behavior in the nursing home. To study the interaction between resident behavior and staff distress in nursing homes, we measured the frequency of seven types of behavior problems among 346 residents of intermediate care facilities who were receiving some form of psychoactive medication. Nurses were interviewed on two shifts to determine their perception of the frequency and severity of each behavior in each patient as well as the level of distress it caused a

Vocal and motor behaviors as a possible expression of gastrointestinal problems in preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) problems are one of the most frequent comorbidities in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but can be under-recognized due to the concomitant communication difficulties of this population. Accordingly, some associated behaviors (AB) such as verbal and motor behaviors (VB and MB, respectively) have been identified as a possible expression of an underlying GI problem and evaluated through an ad hoc questionnaire (the Associated Behaviors Questionnaire -ABQ-). The aims of this study were to investigate the presence and the type of AB in an Italian sample of ASD presch

Confusing confusability: on the problems of using psychophysical measures of letter confusability in neuropsychological research.

The effect of letter confusability on reading has received increasing attention over the last decade. Confusability scores for individual letters, derived from older psychophysical studies, have been used to calculate summed confusability scores for whole words, and effects of this variable on normal and alexic reading have been reported. On this basis, letter confusability is now increasingly controlled for in stimulus selection. In this commentary, we try to clarify what letter confusability scores represent and discuss several problems with the way this variable has been treated in neuropsy

Deceptive, verbally coercive college males: attitudinal predictors and lies told.

About 1 in 4 college males admit to having lied or made false promises to have sex. In sex survey data reported here, 22% of 634 men lied an average of 4 times, but the modal number was 1, and 59% lied fewer than 4 times. Of the men who lied, 71% admitted to having been drinking at least some of these times. Lies told fell mostly into two subjective categories indicating caring or commitment (58%) or that this was not causal sex or a one-night stand (38%). Lying happened mostly at parties (66%) or at the woman's or man's apartment (34%). In contrast, only 0.2% of the males who lied admitted to

Iron Deficiency in Infancy and Sluggish Cognitive Tempo and ADHD Symptoms in Childhood and Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether iron deficiency in infancy is associated with sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) or attention-deficit/hyperactive-impulsive (AD-HI) symptoms in childhood and adolescence, and whether such behaviors contribute concurrently and predictively to lower verbal and mathematical abilities. METHOD: Chilean children (N = 959; 50% male, of Spanish or indigenous descent from working-class backgrounds) were rated by mothers for SCT or AD-HI symptoms at ages 5, 10, and 16 years. Children completed standardized tests assessing verbal and mathematical abilities at ages 5, 10, and

Advances in the research of melatonin in autism spectrum disorders: literature review and new perspectives.

Abnormalities in melatonin physiology may be involved or closely linked to the pathophysiology and behavioral expression of autistic disorder, given its role in neurodevelopment and reports of sleep-wake rhythm disturbances, decreased nocturnal melatonin production, and beneficial therapeutic effects of melatonin in individuals with autism. In addition, melatonin, as a pineal gland hormone produced from serotonin, is of special interest in autistic disorder given reported alterations in central and peripheral serotonin neurobiology. More specifically, the role of melatonin in the ontogenetic e

Intrinsic brain indices of verbal working memory capacity in children and adolescents.

Working memory (WM) is central to the acquisition of knowledge and skills throughout childhood and adolescence. While numerous behavioral and task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have examined WM development, few have used resting-state fMRI (R-fMRI). Here, we present a systematic R-fMRI examination of age-related differences in the neural indices of verbal WM performance in a cross-sectional pediatric sample (ages: 7-17; n=68), using data-driven approaches. Verbal WM capacity was measured with the digit span task, a commonly used educational and clinical assessment.

A meta-analysis of NIBS studies on verbal fluency.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has emerged as a promising tool to modulate neural circuits involved in language production, yet the magnitude and variability of its effects on VF remain to be systematically evaluated. This meta-analysis aimed to quantify the effects of various NIBS techniques on VF performance and to examine the moderating roles of stimulation parameters, target regions, task domains, population characteristics, and language. METHODS: From 1,667 records, 38 studies comprising 91 experimental comparisons met inclusion criteria. Data were extracted on stimula
