Word, nonword, and visual paired associate learning in Dutch dyslexic children.

Verbal and non-verbal learning were investigated in 21 8-11-year-old dyslexic children and chronological-age controls, and in 21 7-9-year-old reading-age controls. Tasks involved the paired associate learning of words, nonwords, or symbols with pictures. Both learning and retention of associations were examined. Results indicated that dyslexic children had difficulty with verbal learning of both words and nonwords. In addition, analysis of the errors made during nonword learning showed that both phonological errors and general learning errors were distributed similarly for the reading groups.

Verb and noun morphology in the spoken and written language of children with language learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of verb and noun morphology in school-age children's spoken and written language. Sixty children, with and without language learning disabilities (LLD), each produced 2 spoken and 2 written language samples. The children's accuracy in using morphemes that mark verb finiteness (regular past tense, 3rd person singular present tense, copula, and auxiliary BE) was compared with their accuracy in using noun morphology (regular plural, possessive, articles). As would be expected, the typically achieving children, who were aged 7 to 12 years, had m

Acquisition and retention of verbal and nonverbal information in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Memory deficits are reported commonly in children with fetal alcohol syndrome. However, little is known about nonverbal memory performance in this population. METHODS: The current study examined learning and memory abilities in alcohol-exposed children and nonexposed controls. Multiple verbal and nonverbal measures were used that incorporated repeated learning trials and delayed recall trials. The alcohol-exposed group included children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure with and without fetal alcohol syndrome. Children ranged in age from 8 to 16 years, and groups were matched o

Visual-spatial learning and memory in schizotypal personality disorder: continued evidence for the importance of working memory in the schizophrenia spectrum.

Verbal episodic memory deficits, a well-established feature of the schizophrenia spectrum, have also been found in individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), although visual-spatial episodic memory has proven harder to examine. To address this, we administered the Visual Object Learning Test (VOLT), a measure of visual-spatial learning and memory, as well as the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and a verbal working memory test, to 50 individuals with SPD, 19 with other personality disorders (OPD), and 17 healthy volunteers. Compared to both other groups, individuals with SP

Personalized approach to cognitive remediation for people with schizophrenia and autism.

OBJECTIVE: People with schizophrenia (PSCZ) and autism spectrum disorders (PASD) suffer from cognitive impairment. Cognitive remediation (CR) interventions aim to enhance cognition, but the approach is often not customized to meet the participants' needs. The Neuropsychological Educational Approach to Remediation - Medalia 2002 (NEAR)- enhances intrinsic motivation. Here participants are choosing cognitive goals according to their cognitive profile, and their training is adjusted accordingly. The aims of this study were 1. To demonstrate patient progress with NEAR for schizophrenia and autism

The role of cognitive style in route learning from maps.

Route information learned from maps can be mentally represented in various formats, such as verbal descriptions, spatial layouts, or mental imagery. Across two studies, we examined whether individuals' preferred modes of representing information (visual-verbal cognitive style) are associated with map-based route learning. In Study 1 (N = 70), participants learned three different routes from three separate maps and, following each learning phase, completed a corresponding memory test in either verbal, visual, or spatial format. Verbal, object-visual, and spatial-visual cognitive style dimension

The procedural learning deficit hypothesis of language learning disorders: we see some problems.

Impaired procedural learning has been suggested as a possible cause of developmental dyslexia (DD) and specific language impairment (SLI). This study examined the relationship between measures of verbal and non-verbal implicit and explicit learning and measures of language, literacy and arithmetic attainment in a large sample of 7 to 8-year-old children. Measures of verbal explicit learning were correlated with measures of attainment. In contrast, no relationships between measures of implicit learning and attainment were found. Critically, the reliability of the implicit learning tasks was poo

Dissociation of long-term verbal memory and fronto-executive impairment in first-episode psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Verbal memory is frequently and severely affected in schizophrenia and has been implicated as a mediator of poor clinical outcome. Whereas encoding deficits are well demonstrated, it is unclear whether retention is impaired. This distinction is important because accelerated forgetting implies impaired consolidation attributable to medial temporal lobe (MTL) dysfunction whereas impaired encoding and retrieval implicates involvement of prefrontal cortex. METHOD: We assessed a group of healthy volunteers (n=97) and pre-morbid IQ- and sex-matched first-episode psychosis patients (n=97

Implications of articulatory awareness in learning literacy in English as a second language.

The articulatory awareness task, which was found by Griffiths and Frith (2002) to discriminate ex-dyslexic from non-dyslexic adults, was given to three groups of Japanese college students with different English reading abilities. Two unexpected results emerged: (1) Articulatory awareness performance was generally poor across the groups, thereby suggesting that poor articulatory awareness is not unique to dyslexia but rather to reading difficulty in general, and (2) There was a weak but significant positive correlation between articulatory awareness and English reading ability. Implications are

The effects of inflectional variation on fast mapping of verbs in English and Spanish.

To use morphological cues for syntactic bootstrapping, children must recognize that inflectionally varying words (e.g., pushes, pushed) are instances of the same word. Children who are exposed to languages with richer inflectional morphologies than English, such as Spanish, encounter instances of inflectional variation more often. Thus they may learn to recognize inflectionally varying words as instances of the same word at an earlier age than do learners of English. English-and Spanish-learning 3-year olds were taught novel verbs in a fast mapping task under two conditions: no-inflectional va

The clinical utility of a memory specialization index in epilepsy surgery patients with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Although group studies provide some support for the material-specific model of memory function, there are considerable individual variations in memory function in people with temporal lobe epilepsy, even in those with the same underlying pathology. In this proof-of-concept study, we examined the sensitivity and specificity of a single measure of an individual's relative strength for the encoding of verbal or visual learning. METHODS: Six hundred ninety-two patients with left hemisphere language dominance and unilateral hippocampal sclerosis completed verbal and visual encoding task

Verbal memory impairments in dyslexia.

Although verbal memory deficits are frequently reported in reading disabled children, the specific mechanisms underlying these impairments have yet to be clearly defined. The present study used the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) to assess verbal learning in 57 dyslexic children and 114 controls matched for gender, age, and WISC-R Vocabulary score. Three areas of verbal memory were investigated: Recall and recognition, use of learning strategies, and interference effects. The dyslexic group learned the list items more slowly, recalled fewer words on the last learnin

Cortico-hippocampal networks underpin verbal memory encoding in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Knowledge of the structural underpinnings of human verbal memory is scarce. Understanding the human verbal memory network at a finer anatomical scale will have important clinical implications for the management of patients with verbal memory impairment. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to assess the contributions of cerebral cortex and hippocampal subfields to verbal memory encoding in temporal lobe epilepsy. We included consecutive patients (n = 84) with radiologically and pathologically defined hippocampal sclerosis (HS) (44 left-sided) and unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy, and healt

Modulation of mediotemporal and ventrostriatal function in humans by Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol: a neural basis for the effects of Cannabis sativa on learning and psychosis.

CONTEXT: Cannabis sativa use can impair verbal learning, provoke acute psychosis, and increase the risk of schizophrenia. It is unclear where C. sativa acts in the human brain to modulate verbal learning and to induce psychotic symptoms. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of 2 main psychoactive constituents of C. sativa, Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta9-THC) and cannabidiol, on regional brain function during verbal paired associate learning. DESIGN: Subjects were studied on 3 separate occasions using a block design functional magnetic resonance imaging paradigm while performing a verb

Semantic and phonological coding in poor and normal readers.

Three studies were conducted evaluating semantic and phonological coding deficits as alternative explanations of reading disability. In the first study, poor and normal readers in second and sixth grade were compared on various tests evaluating semantic development as well as on tests evaluating rapid naming and pseudoword decoding as independent measures of phonological coding ability. In a second study, the same subjects were given verbal memory and visual-verbal learning tasks using high and low meaning words as verbal stimuli and Chinese ideographs as visual stimuli. On the semantic tasks,

Asymmetry Matters: Diffusion Tensor Tractography of the Uncinate Fasciculus in Children with Verbal Memory Deficits.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Verbal declarative memory performance relies on frontotemporal connectivity. The uncinate fasciculus is a major association tract connecting the frontal and temporal lobes. Hemispheric asymmetries contribute to various cognitive and neurobehavioral abilities. Here we investigated microstructural alterations and hemispheric asymmetry of the uncinate fasciculus and their possible correlation to memory performance of children with learning disorders attributed to verbal memory deficits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups of right-handed children with learning disorders att

What happens after menopause? (WHAM): A prospective controlled study of cognition 24 months after premenopausal risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Women with BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants considering risk-reducing bilateral oophorectomy (RRSO) may be concerned about potential effects of surgical menopause on cognition. Whether RRSO affects cognition and whether hormone therapy (HT) modifies this effect remains uncertain. This study aimed to prospectively measure the effect of premenopausal RRSO on cognition and the modifying effects of HT up to 24 months. METHODS: The design was a prospective, multisite (4 sites in Australia), 24-month observational study. Participants were premenopausal BRCA1/2 carriers (n = 83) planning RRSO

Childhood apraxia of speech: children at risk for persistent reading and spelling disorder.

This article discusses written language development in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Children with CAS are at risk for persistent reading and spelling disorder in addition to their spoken communication difficulties. The article highlights four factors that increase the risk of written language disorder in this population: (1) the nature of the speech disorder, (2) the presence of phonological awareness difficulties, (3) genetic risk factors, and (4) the negative impact of early reading difficulty on later written language development. The article suggests that traditional ap
