Anatomical organization of the brainstem octavolateralis area of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau.

Anatomical studies were undertaken to analyze the brainstem organization of the auditory, vestibular, and lateral line nuclei in a teleost, the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. Neuronal cytoarchitectonics and horseradish peroxidase label of cranial nerves were utilized to delineate the borders of the five octavus and two lateralis brainstem nuclei. Each of the eight octavolateralis nerves were labeled individually to compare and contrast their central projections. Projections of the three semicircular canals were found to be largely overlapping. Terminal fields were observed within the eminentia

Vulnerability of the vestibular organs to transient ischemia: implications for isolated vascular vertigo.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of isolated vascular vertigo by determining selective and relative ischemic vulnerability of the vestibular structures using a global hypoperfusion model in rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 330-350 g were subjected to transient global ischemia of the brain using a 4-vessel-occlusion (4VO) model. After permanent occlusion of both vertebral arteries (VA) using electrocauterization, both common carotid arteries (CCAs) were occluded for 5-20 min with ligation. One hour after reperfusion of the CCAs, the animals were sacrificed and subject

Vestibular nuclear complex in cattle: topography, morphology, cytoarchitecture and lumbo-sacral projections.

The topography and the main characteristics of the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) in cattle have been studied in serially transversally cut Nissl and Gles-stained sections. By using computerized image analysis software, the cell size, the maximum and minimum diameter of the neurons of each vestibular nucleus were obtained. These parameters were statistically analyzed by comparing the cell population from different nuclei and different parts of each nucleus. Furthermore, in order to investigate the lumbo-sacral projections, the fluorescent tracer Fast Blue was injected into the L6-S1 spinal c

Altered monoaminergic levels, spasticity, and balance disability following repetitive blast-induced traumatic brain injury in rats.

Spasticity and balance disability are major complications following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although monoaminergic inputs provide critical adaptive neuromodulations to the motor system, data are not available regarding the levels of monoamines in the brain regions related to motor functions following repetitive blast TBI (bTBI). The objective of this study was to determine if mild, repetitive bTBI results in spasticity/balance deficits and if these are correlated with altered levels of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in the brain regions related to the motor system. Repetitive bT

Isolated vestibular nucleus infarction mimicking acute peripheral vestibulopathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although several articles have been published on central vestibular syndrome mimicking acute peripheral vestibulopathy (ie, pseudo-acute peripheral vestibulopathy), there are no reports of a brainstem infarct that selectively involves the vestibular nucleus and causes isolated vertigo. SUMMARY OF CASE: We report a patient with an isolated vestibular nucleus infarction who presented with isolated prolonged vertigo, spontaneous horizontal nystagmus with a torsional component, a positive head impulse test result, and unilateral canal paresis to caloric stimulation. Adaptive Balance in Posterior Cerebellum.

Vestibular and optokinetic space is represented in three-dimensions in vermal lobules IX-X (uvula, nodulus) and hemisphere lobule X (flocculus) of the cerebellum. Vermal lobules IX-X encodes gravity and head movement using the utricular otolith and the two vertical semicircular canals. Hemispheric lobule X encodes self-motion using optokinetic feedback about the three axes of the semicircular canals. Vestibular and visual adaptation of this circuitry is needed to maintain balance during perturbations of self-induced motion. Vestibular and optokinetic (self-motion detection) stimulation is enco

[Study of mechanisms underlying the effects of low-frequency acoustic vibrations].

The article covers experimental data about influence of infrasound on hearing and vestibular apparatus, about body changes linked functionally to this apparatus. The authors revealed 4 zones of response of hearing and vestibular apparatus to infrasound. Infrasound appeared to affect directly nuclei of VIII and X cranial nerves and indirectly other organs and systems linked functionally to vagus nerve.

Bilateral vestibular failure as an early sign in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Bilateral vestibular failure causes dysfunction of the vestibulo-ocular reflex with consecutive symptoms like apparent movements of the visual environment during head movements (oscillopsia) and unsteady gait in darkness or on uneven ground. A definite case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in which bilateral vestibular loss was one of the first clinical signs is reported. Further, in a series of 9 consecutive patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (6 probable, 3 definite), 3 had bilateral vestibular loss at initial presentation. The vestibular nuclei are known to be severely affected in animal sp

Corticonuclear and corticovestibular projections from the uvula in the albino rat: differential projections from sublobuli of the uvula.

The organization of the corticonuclear and corticovestibular projections from the uvula was investigated in the albino rat by an autoradiographic method. The corticonuclear fibers from sublobule a of the uvula terminated in the caudoventral part of the medial cerebellar nucleus, and the caudomedial part of the posterior interpositus nucleus with mediolateral topography. The medial and lateral portions of the sublobule projected to the medial cerebellar and posterior interpositus nuclei, respectively. The corticovestibular fibers from sublobule a terminated in the dorsal and rostral parts of th

[Tonic deviation of gaze in Wallenberg's syndrome].

A case of tonic deviation of gaze in a case of Wallenberg's syndrome is presented. Apart from oculostatic signs there were oculokinetic disorders presenting as a dysmetria of saccades with hypometria contralateral to the lesion. The physiopathology of this disorder is discussed. This syndrome of ocular lateropulsion probably results from a lesion of the restiform body interrupting cerebello-vestibular connections, associated with a lesion of the inferior part of the vestibular nuclei.

Neuronal birthdate reveals topography in a vestibular brainstem circuit for gaze stabilization.

Across the nervous system, neurons with similar attributes are topographically organized. This topography reflects developmental pressures. Oddly, vestibular (balance) nuclei are thought to be disorganized. By measuring activity in birthdated neurons, we revealed a functional map within the central vestibular projection nucleus that stabilizes gaze in the larval zebrafish. We first discovered that both somatic position and stimulus selectivity follow projection neuron birthdate. Next, with electron microscopy and loss-of-function assays, we found that patterns of peripheral innervation to proj

Evidence of a direct projection from the medial terminal nucleus of the accessory optic system to lobule IX of the cerebellar cortex in the tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

Injections of a wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate were placed in representative areas of the cerebellar cortex of adult tree shrews. Retrogradely labeled cells were found in the medial terminal nucleus (MTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS) when ventral portions of the uvula were involved in the injection site. These labeled cells are small to medium sized and have round or oval somata and few primary dendrites. The AOS functions to stabilize the eyes and head in space. The present observations provide evidence of a direct projection from the MTN of the tree shrew AOS t

The effect of complex double-axis rotation model on GABAergic neurons in caudal ventrolateral medulla of rats along the vestibulo-sympathetic reflex pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness is a common physiological disorder induced by with unusual movement exposure, characterized by conflicting motion signals that trigger vestibulo-sympathetic reflexes (VSR). These reflexes mediate autonomic responses to motion-induced stress. Previous studies have implicated the vestibular nucleus complex and the caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM) in VSR modulation. GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS), plays a key role in both cardiovascular regulation and vestibular function. However, the specifi

Diagnosis of vestibular imbalance in the blink of an eye.

BACKGROUND: In a recent study, the authors found that blinks in healthy volunteers always triggered ocular torsion quick phases during dynamic roll movements of the head. On the basis of this observation, they hypothesized that blinks in patients with a vestibular tone imbalance would also trigger torsional quick phases. METHODS: Using video-oculography with a fixation target, the authors recorded the ocular torsion position of the left eye of 37 participants while they made voluntary blinks once every 6 to 10 seconds. The participants were recruited from four groups: two age groups of health

Light microscopical study of nitric oxide synthase I-positive neurons, including fibres in the vestibular nuclear complex of the cat.

Nitric oxide is a gaseous neurotransmitter that is synthesized by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase I (NOS I). At present, little is known of NOS I-positive neurons in the vestibular nuclear complex of the cat (VNCc). The aim of the present study was to examine the morphology, distribution patterns and interconnections of NOS I-positive neurons, including fibres in the VNCc. Five adult cats were used as experimental animals. All cats were anaesthetized and perfused transcardially. Brains were removed, postfixed, cut on a freezing microtome and stained in three different ways. Every third sectio

Microcomputer-based spike train analysis.

A system has been developed to analyse statistically the information contained within neuronal spike trains in the central nervous system. The system consists of a microprocessor development system, together with the peripheral components and transducers. Suitable software packages have been developed to analyse statistical parameters including the mean, variance, entropy, conditional entropy, serial correlation coefficients, Markov dependency and Markov order. By linking up the required routines, the system is capable of responding in real-time and plotting the desired results from the spike

Vestibulo-ocular reflexes in rabbits: reduction by intravenous injection of diazepam.

We have studied the influence of intravenously administered diazepam on the horizontal (HVOR) and vertical (VVOR) vestibulo-ocular reflexes of the rabbit. The HVOR and VVOR were evoked by sinusoidal oscillation of rabbits on a rate table (0.01 to 0.8 Hz, +/- 10 degrees), and eye movements were measured with an infrared light-projection technique. The gains of the HVOR and VVOR (evoked eye velocity/head velocity) were reduced by diazepam injections of 5 microgram/kg. The dose required to produce a 50% reduction in HVOR gain was 500 microgram/kg. The time required to reduce the HVOR gain to 50%
