The prevalence of physical and sexual abuse in women veterans seeking care at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Physical and sexual abuse are increasingly recognized as common harmful experiences for women. We surveyed 828 women veterans seeking care at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center to determine the prevalence of physical and sexual abuse experiences, both during and outside of military service. Data were collected through an anonymous, mailed questionnaire, with a response rate of 52%. Sixty-eight percent of respondents reported at least one form of abuse, and 27% reported all three. Sexual abuse was most common (55%), followed by physical abuse (48%), and rape (41%). Enlisted women, wo

Assessing methods to identify Veterans Health Administration populations with Veterans Justice Programs contact to improve health research.

Military veterans with criminal legal involvement have a need for healthcare and housing to attenuate their risks of suicide, overdose, and homelessness. Links between criminal legal involvement and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care are poorly understood, partly because it is challenging to correctly identify veterans with criminal legal involvement. This study's primary objective was to assess VHA data sources and codes from the electronic health record that indicate contact with Veterans Justice Programs (VJP) staff - a broad proxy for criminal legal involvement. We examined three da

Self-perceptions of mental health among U.S. Veterans and non-Veterans: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Veteran and other service member sub-populations have an increased likelihood of mental illness. Diagnosed mental health conditions among Veteran populations have been well described. However, direct self-perceptions of mental health have been under-researched. This study examined the association between Veteran status and self-perceived mental health in U.S. adults to provide better monitoring of frequent mental distress among Veteran populations. Methods: The 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) cross-sectional telephone survey data were used in this analysis

Negative aging stereotypes in U.S. military veterans: results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

U.S. military veterans are an average 20 years older than non-veterans and have elevated rates of certain health conditions. While negative aging stereotypes have been linked to increased risk for various health conditions, little is known about the prevalence and correlates of these stereotypes in this population. Using data from a nationally representative sample of 4,069 U.S. veterans surveyed between 11/19 and 3/20, we examined (1) the current prevalence of negative aging stereotypes related to physical, mental, and cognitive health and (2) sociodemographic, health, and psychosocial factor

Hypertension Treatment Modality and Suicide Risk Among Veterans in Veterans Health Administration Care From 2015 to 2017.

IMPORTANCE: The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) serves a population of veterans with a high prevalence of comorbid health conditions and increased risk for suicide. OBJECTIVE: To replicate the findings of a previous study and assess whether exposure to angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) is associated with differential suicide risk compared with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) among veterans receiving VHA care. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nested case-control design included all suicide decedents from 2015 to 2017 with a VHA inpatient or outpatient encounter

Factors distinguishing veterans participating in supported education services from veterans on campus: Evidence supporting modifiable intervention targets.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify specific and modifiable supported education (SEd) service needs for the veteran population. To do so, we compared veterans participating in SEd services to other veterans on campus with respect to service-related challenges, community reintegration, and academic-related challenges. Identifying independent factors that distinguish veterans receiving SEd services from other veterans on campus may help operationalize interventions that target the unique challenges in this vulnerable population. METHOD: This study used an exploratory cross-sect

Exploring Rural Disparities in Medical Diagnoses Among Veterans With Transgender-related Diagnoses Utilizing Veterans Health Administration Care.

OBJECTIVES: Research shows transgender individuals experience pronounced health disparities compared with their nontransgender peers. Yet, there remains insufficient research about health differences within transgender populations. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how current urban/rural status is associated with lifetime diagnosis of mood disorder, alcohol dependence disorder, illicit drug abuse disorder, tobacco use, posttraumatic stress disorder, human immunodeficiency virus, and suicidal ideation or attempt among veterans with transgender-related diagnoses. METHODS: This stu

Intimate partner violence, unhealthy alcohol use, and housing instability among women veterans in the Veterans Health Administration.

Women U.S. military veterans face particularly high rates of homelessness, which may be associated with psychosocial experiences including unhealthy alcohol use and experience of intimate partner violence (IPV). In this study, we examined clinical social health screening data to assess the association between housing instability and (a) experience of past-year IPV victimization, and (b) unhealthy alcohol use among 554 women receiving primary care from the Veterans Health Administration. Approximately 12% of patients screened reported housing instability. Experience of past-year IPV was associa

Characteristics of veterans receiving buprenorphine vs. methadone for opioid use disorder nationally in the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: The advent of buprenorphine as an alternative to methadone has dramatically shifted the landscape of opioid agonist therapy (OAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, there is limited US national level data describing thedifferences between patients who are prescribed these two OAT options. METHODS: From veterans with OUD diagnosis who used Veterans Health Administration services in 2012, we identified 3 mutually exclusive groups: those who received (1) buprenorphine only (n=5,670); (2) methadone only (n=6,252); or (3) both buprenorphine and methadone in the same year (n=2513).

Residential placement for veterans with addiction: American Society of Addiction Medicine criteria vs. a veterans homeless program.

The goal of this study was to compare placements of patients with addiction undertaken by a) a unidimensional, protocol-driven, independent "permanent" housing "wet" program versus b) a multidimensional, patient-individualized, contingency-based housing approach. The sample consisted of eight veterans in a single team's panel admitted to a housing program and eight matched veterans on the verge of homelessness placed by the team according to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria. The two groups (matched for sex, race-ethnicity, and age [SD, 5 years]) were similar on demogr

Sex-specific associations between homelessness and cerebrovascular disease among aging US veterans in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system.

Homelessness and chronic disease have been previously linked. We examined the bidirectional, sex-specific, relationship between homelessness and cerebrovascular disease among aging veterans seeking U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare services. A retrospective study was conducted among a cohort of 4,061,031 veterans (mean [± standard deviation] age: 68.7 [± 10.3] years; 94.6% men) followed between 2017 and 2021 and defined through linkage of VA Corporate Data Warehouse, Homeless Operations Management System, and Mortality Data Repository databases. Psychological Resilience in U.S. Military Veterans: Results from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

Following exposure to traumatic life events, most individuals are psychologically resilient, and experience minimal-to-no symptoms of posttraumatic stress, major depressive, or generalized anxiety disorders. To date, however, most research has focused on factors associated with adverse post-trauma mental health outcomes rather than understanding those associated with psychological resilience. In particular, little is known about factors associated with psychological resilience in veterans, despite their high rates of trauma exposure, such as combat and military sexual trauma. To address this g

Risk and protective factors associated with mental health among female military veterans: results from the veterans' health study.

BACKGROUND: This study focuses on factors that may disproportionately affect female veterans' mental health, compared to men, and is part of a larger study assessing the prevalence of mental health disorders and treatment seeking among formerly deployed US military service members. METHODS: We surveyed a random sample of 1,730 veterans who were patients in a large non-VA hospital system in the US. Based on previous research, women were hypothesized to be at higher risk for psychological problems. We adjusted our results for confounding factors, including history of trauma, childhood abuse, co
