Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of Italian honey for wound healing application in veterinary medicine.

Honey as a topical treatment for infected wounds dates back to ancient times. However, few studies have been reported concerning the medical properties of Italian honey. In this study, the microbial contamination, the antimicrobial activity and the antibiotic residues of 6 different varieties of Piedmont honeys were evaluated. The antimicrobial activity of honeys was tested by agar well diffusion method and 1 honey for each variety has been selected and tested by broth micro-dilution test to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) and evaluated by Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations

Bartonella spp. - a chance to establish One Health concepts in veterinary and human medicine.

Infectious diseases remain a remarkable health threat for humans and animals. In the past, the epidemiology, etiology and pathology of infectious agents affecting humans and animals have mostly been investigated in separate studies. However, it is evident, that combined approaches are needed to understand geographical distribution, transmission and infection biology of "zoonotic agents". The genus Bartonella represents a congenial example of the synergistic benefits that can arise from such combined approaches: Bartonella spp. infect a broad variety of animals, are linked with a constantly inc

Myokymia and neuromyotonia in veterinary medicine: a comparison with peripheral nerve hyperexcitability syndrome in humans.

Involuntary muscle hyperactivity can result from muscle or peripheral nerve hyperexcitability or central nervous system dysfunction. In humans, diseases causing hyperexcitability of peripheral nerves are grouped together under the term 'peripheral nerve hyperexcitability' (PNH). Hyperexcitability of the peripheral motor nerve can result into five different phenotypic main variants, i.e. fasciculations, myokymia, neuromyotonia, cramps and tetany, each with their own clinical and electromyographic characteristics. This review focuses on the most commonly described expressions of PNH in veterinar

[Blood analysis 200 years ago--the theory and practice of hematoscopy in veterinary medicine].

Since antiquity the macroscopic judgement of blood obtained through phlebotomy was an important constituent of the medical diagnostic procedures. In the progress of blood sedimentation, the "eucrasia" or the "dyscrasia" of the humours became visible. This paper summarizes the historical and theoretical basis of the haematoscopy, and offers insight into the haemodiagnostic practices of a veterinarian at the end of the 18th century. The authority is the professor of veterinary art and medical advisor Anton Joseph Will (1752-1821), mental father and founder of the veterinary school in Munich, whi

Biomedical waste management in veterinary medicine and its impact on the environment: A comprehensive review.

Biomedical waste (BMW) management is a crucial aspect of both human and veterinary healthcare to prevent environmental contamination and transmission of infectious diseases. Veterinary BMW, although often overlooked, comprises hazardous materials such as infectious waste, sharps, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, radioactive substances, and pathological remains. Despite its significant contribution to hazardous waste, veterinary BMW often lacks sufficient regulatory focus and compliance. Various countries have implemented regulatory frameworks, including India's Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules (2

Serum Sialic Acid as a Biomarker of Inflammation and Infection: Insights From Veterinary Medicine.

Serum sialic acid (SSA) levels, including total sialic acid (TSA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA), and protein-bound sialic acid (PBSA), have been extensively studied as biomarkers of inflammation and infection across various species and diseases. In parasitemic sheep, elevated SSA levels likely reflect host-pathogen interactions and immune activation. Contrasting findings in bovine theileriosis demonstrated increased sialic acid (SA) levels during acute infections but decreased levels in severe parasitemia, suggesting variable responses based on parasitemia rates. SSA and LBSA levels in dogs

Current Trends in Approaches to Prevent and Control Antimicrobial Resistance in Aquatic Veterinary Medicine.

The growth of aquaculture production in recent years has revealed multiple challenges, including the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquatic animal production, which is currently attracting significant attention from multiple one-health stakeholders. While antibiotics have played a major role in the treatment of bacterial infections for almost a century, a major consequence of their use is the increase in AMR, including the emergence of AMR in aquaculture. The AMR phenomenon creates a situation where antibiotic use in one system (e.g., aquaculture) may impact another system (e.g., te

Architecture, goals and challenges of the Swiss Information System for Antibiotics in Veterinary Medicine (IS ABV).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In-depth knowledge of antibiotic treatments in animals is essential to effectively combat antimicrobial resistance. Notably, veterinary antibiotic sales in Switzerland have dropped by >50% in the past decade. However, a further breakdown by species or detailed livestock classes such as dairy or fattening cattle has so far not been possible because products are often authorized for use in multiple species and sectors. In 2020, the Swiss national monitoring system for antibiotic use (IS ABV) was introduced, which has substantially improved the availability of detailed

Dying like a dog: the convergence of concepts of a good death in human and veterinary medicine.

Standard views of good death in human and veterinary medicine considerably differ from one another. Whereas the good death ideal in palliative medicine emphasizes the positive aspects of non-induced dying, veterinarians typically promote a quick and painless killing with the aim to end suffering. Recent developments suggest a convergence of both professions and professional attitudes, however. Palliative physicians are confronted with patients wishing to be 'put to sleep', while veterinarians have begun to integrate principles and practices from hospice care. We will argue that the discourses

Outreach Medicine as an Experiential Teaching Tool to Improve Veterinary Student and Client Education.

Outreach medicine is used to improve students' medical, technical, behavioral, and communication training among health professional schools; it is also used in veterinary schools, but little has been described on its educational impacts among pre-clinical veterinary students. Aiming to train practice-ready graduates, we established a monthly nonprofit vaccine clinic serving low-income clients to provide pre-clinical veterinary students with a realistic experiential learning environment. We developed surveys to assess the educational impacts of outreach medicine on pre-clinical veterinary stude

An overview of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in veterinary medicine and their public health consequences.

Serious human and animal infections caused by bacteria are usually treated with beta-lactams. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) constitute the most clinically and economically important enzymes that are able to hydrolyze and inactivate beta-lactam antibiotics in veterinary medicine. The spread of ESBLs represents a serious threat to healthcare systems, drastically undermining therapeutic options. The relationship between drug usage and the emergence of resistance has been extensively reported. Nevertheless, the use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine and the emergence of ESBLs in

A comparison of antimicrobial usage in human and veterinary medicine in France from 1999 to 2005.

OBJECTIVES: The antimicrobials allowed and amounts sold in veterinary and human medicine in France were compared to see if the same antimicrobial drugs are used in veterinary and human medicine, and to the same extent. METHODS: Registers of all approved antimicrobial commercial products, kept by the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (AFSSA ANMV) for animals and the French Health Products Safety Agency (AFSSAPS) for humans, were compared to determine whether the same antimicrobials were approved in 2007 for use in both human and animal populations. Sales data were collected from

Virus-like particles in cancer immunotherapy: bridging human and veterinary medicine through one health.

Virus-like particles (VLPs) are engineered nanoplatforms that mimic viral structures, offering high immunogenicity, biocompatibility, and functional versatility for cancer immunotherapy. While widely explored in human oncology as nanovaccines and targeted delivery systems for chemo-/immuno-therapeutics and genetic payloads (e.g., mRNA, siRNA, and CRISPR/Cas systems), their potential in veterinary oncology remains underexploited. This review synthesizes recent advances in VLP design, including scaffold engineering, antigen display, cargo encapsulation, and surface functionalization, and discuss

Exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage in horses: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine consensus statement.

BACKGROUND: Published studies of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), when assessed individually, often provide equivocal or conflicting results. Systematic reviews aggregate evidence from individual studies to provide a global assessment of the quality of evidence and to inform recommendations. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate evidence to determine: if EIPH adversely affects the health, welfare or both of horses; if EIPH affects the athletic capacity of horses; the efficacy of prophylactic interventions for EIPH; and if furosemide affects the athletic capacity of horses. ANIMALS: None. MATERI

Understanding error culture in veterinary medicine: a survey among veterinarians across German-speaking countries.

INTRODUCTION: Errors are assumed to occur frequently in veterinary practice and may affect animal health, client trust, and the well-being of veterinary staff. Their handling is shaped by the prevailing error culture within practices and institutions. While error culture has been investigated in human medicine and extensively in other high-risk fields such as aviation, little is known about how it is perceived within veterinary medicine. METHODS: This study therefore examined practising veterinarians' perceptions of errors, contributing factors, reporting practices, and institutional response
