The influence of vibrissal somatosensory processing in rat superior colliculus on prey capture.

The lateral part of intermediate layer of superior colliculus (SCl) is a critical substrate for successful predation by rats. Hunting-evoked expression of the activity marker Fos is concentrated in SCl while prey capture in rats with NMDA lesions in SCl is impaired. Particularly affected are rapid orienting and stereotyped sequences of actions associated with predation of fast moving prey. Such deficits are consistent with the view that the deep layers of SC are important for sensory guidance of movement. Although much of the relevant evidence involves visual control of movement, less is known

[Influence of the neural stem cell transplantation on the restoration of CNS functions in rats with cortical stroke].

Ischemic stroke was modeled in white pedigreeless rats by the superficial blood vessel devascularization in the sensorimotor cortex. The preparations of neural progenitors--rat embryonic neural stem cells (rENSC) and human olfactory epithelium-derived neural stem cells (hOENSC) and differentiated fibroblasts ("cell control") were transplanted at the perimeter of the devascularized region. These cells marked with vital tracer stayed alive in the brain parenchyma for at least 16 days. The monitoring of contralateral forepaw motor deficit during 8 weeks demonstrated that only rats with rENSC tran

Season and application rates affect vaccine bait consumption by prairie dogs in Colorado and Utah, USA.

Plague, a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, causes high rates of mortality in prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.). An oral vaccine against plague has been developed for prairie dogs along with a palatable bait to deliver vaccine and a biomarker to track bait consumption. We conducted field trials between September 2009 and September 2012 to develop recommendations for bait distribution to deliver plague vaccine to prairie dogs. The objectives were to evaluate the use of the biomarker, rhodamine B, in field settings to compare bait distribution strategies, to compare uptake of b

Functional assessments of the rodent facial nerve: a synkinesis model.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Rodent whisker movement has been used as a tool, after facial nerve manipulation, to quantify functional recovery. We have recently established a method to study functional correlates of aberrant regeneration of the facial nerve. Our objective was to establish normative parameters for both spontaneous and induced whisking and blinking behavior in a large group of normal rats. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective animal study. METHODS: Eighty animals underwent quantitative facial movement testing to measure simultaneous vibrissal movement and ocular closure for each side independe

The structure and function of cutaneous sensory receptors.

The present review of cutaneous sensory receptors begins with a consideration of free nerve endings (FNEs) that can be considered as sensory terminals evidencing the least structural specialization of the axon and associated cells. Using the criteria established by Kruger et al (1981), FNEs of both A delta and C fibers can be identified on the basis of ultrastructural characteristics that include an intimate relationship between axons and the associated epithelium, the lack of a complete Schwann cell investment, the accumulation of numerous vesicles and other cytoplasmic organelles, and for A

Distinct expression of neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein (NAIP) during murine development.

The childhood spinal muscular atrophies (SMAs) are autosomal recessive neurodegenerative conditions characterized by progressive degeneration of lower motor neurons. The gene encoding NAIP (neuronal apoptosis inhibitory protein) has been proposed to be a modulator of the severity of SMA and is frequently deleted in type I SMA. In this study we have assessed NAIP (murine homologue of NAIP) transcript levels during mouse embryogenesis. NAIP mRNA is present in the developing brain and spinal cord of E9.5-E14.5 mouse embryos as detected by various in situ hybridization techniques. It is also found

Foraging devices as enrichment in captive walruses (Odobenus rosmarus).

Stereotypies in captive animals are typically defined as repetitive, invariant behavioral patterns with no obvious goal or function. They are often attributed to boredom or fear and treated by introducing occupational stimuli. The present work on captive walruses examined the relationship between walrus stereotypies and species-typical foraging behaviors engaged in by their wild counterparts. Two types of walrus stereotypies were studied: (a) patterned swimming around their pool, or (b) repetitive sucking of some item, typically their own flipper. We tested two enrichment devices under filled

Subthreshold continuous electrical stimulation facilitates functional recovery of facial nerve after crush injury in rabbit.

We sought to determine whether electrical stimulation (ES) with subthreshold, continuous, low-frequency impulses is a viable clinical method for improving functional recovery after facial nerve crush injury. In 10 rabbits, bilateral crush injuries were made on the facial nerve by compression for 30 s with mosquito forceps, causing complete facial paralysis. Subthreshold continuous direct current ES with 20-Hz square-wave pulses was applied to the proximal stump on one side for 4 weeks. Vibrissae movement returned significantly earlier on the ES side, with a less variable recovery time. Electro

Repair of facial nerve defects with decellularized artery allografts containing autologous adipose-derived stem cells in a rat model.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a decellularized artery allograft containing autologous adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) on an 8-mm facial nerve branch lesion in a rat model. At 8 weeks postoperatively, functional evaluation of unilateral vibrissae movements, morphological analysis of regenerated nerve segments and retrograde labeling of facial motoneurons were all analyzed. Better regenerative outcomes associated with functional improvement, great axonal growth, and improved target reinnervation were achieved in the artery-ADSCs group (2), whereas the cut nerves

Accelerating functional recovery after rat facial nerve injury: Effects of gonadal steroids and electrical stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the combined effects of electrical stimulation and testosterone propionate on overall recovery time in rats with extracranial crush injuries to the facial nerve. STUDY DESIGN: Male rats underwent castration 3 to 5 days prior to right facial nerve crush injury and electrode implantation. Rats were randomly assigned to two groups: crush injury + testosterone or crush injury with electrical stimulation + testosterone. Recovery was assessed by daily subjective examination documenting vibrissae orientation/movement, semi-eye blink, and full eye blink. RESULTS: Milestone

Behavioral and electrophysiological consequences of deafferentation following chronic constriction of the infraorbital nerve in adult rats.

Deafferentation of the hind paw following sciatic nerve injury results in behavioral changes, such as autotomy, suggestive of persistent, spontaneous pain. The effects of deafferentation involving trigeminal nerves have, however, received less attention. Here, alterations in trigeminal ganglion neuronal activity and mechanically evoked and spontaneous behavior were studied in adult rats after a chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (ION). Compared to sham-operated rats, most rats with ION damage were unresponsive to mechanical stimulation of the mystacial vibrissae up to 56 day

Expression pattern of Ptch2 in mouse embryonic maxillofacial development.

Embryogenesis is modulated by numerous complex signaling cascades, which are essential for normal development. The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway is part of these central cascades. As a homolog of Patched (Ptch)-1, Ptch2 initially did not appear to be as important as Ptch1. Recent reports have revealed that Ptch2 plays a crucial role in ligand-dependent feedback inhibition of Hh signaling in vertebrates. The role of Ptch2 in facial development remains unclear. Here, we investigated the detailed expression pattern of Ptch2 during craniofacial development in murine embryos based on in situ hybr

Decoding propulsive wakes using biomimetic seal whiskers.

Detecting and tracking swimming animals without disturbing them is a central need in fisheries protection and aquatic biological monitoring, yet optical and acoustic methods remain limited underwater. Passive hydrodynamic sensing offers an alternative: harbour seals can follow hydrodynamic wakes over long distances, and biomimetic whiskers respond measurably to the wakes of upstream bodies. Here we quantify how well four independently varied properties of a propulsive source can be discriminated simultaneously from a single force-instrumented whisker, using towing-tank measurements of ascaled

Cortical circuits for whisker sensory perception-From barrel columns to brain-wide interactions.

The sense of touch provides spatial and textural information but how tactile input is integrated with motor signals and selectively processed for adaptive behavior remain incompletely understood. Here, I review neuronal circuits contributing to whisker sensation in rodents at three different levels. First, I point to the columnar architecture of the primary somatosensory cortex in which whiskers are individually represented by barrel columns with intricate microcircuits, likely important for processing tactile information from individual whiskers. Next, I highlight the importance of lateral in

Barrelette map formation in the prenatal mouse brainstem.

The rodent whiskers are topographically mapped in brainstem sensory nuclei as neuronal modules known as barrelettes. Little is known about how the facial whisker pattern is copied into a brainstem barrelette topographic pattern, which serves as a template for the establishment of thalamic barreloid and, in turn, cortical barrel maps, and how precisely is the whisker pattern mapped in the brainstem during prenatal development. Here, we review recent insights advancing our understanding of the intrinsic and extrinsic patterning mechanisms contributing to establish topographical equivalence betwe

Constraints on somatosensory map development: mutants lead the way.

In the rodent somatosensory system, the disproportionally large whisker representation and their specialization into barrel-shaped units in the different sensory relays has offered experimentalists with an ideal tool to identify mechanisms involved in brain map formation. These combine three intertwined constraints: Firstly, fasciculation of the incoming axons; secondly, early neural activity; finally, molecular patterning. Sophisticated genetic manipulations in mice have now allowed dissecting these mechanisms with greater accuracy. Here we discuss some recent papers that provided novel insig

Consequences of interspecies antennal imaginal disc transplantation on organization of olfactory glomeruli and pheromone blend discrimination.

The antennal imaginal disc was transplanted between male larvae of two different heliothine moth species, Heliothis virescens (HV) and Helicoverpa zea (HZ). Males of these species respond to distinct pheromone blends, have different peripheral and central olfactory neuron specificities, as well as distinct arrangements of antennal lobe olfactory glomeruli, in the specialized male macroglomerular complex (MGC). After pupal development and adult eclosion, unilateral (with one antennal disc left intact) and bilateral antennal transplant males were assayed in a wind tunnel to both species' pheromo

Orofacial Movements: Individuality and Stereotypy When Mice Move a Single Whisker to Touch.

A key function of the brain is to move the body through a rich, complex environment. When rodents engage with their environment, they move their whiskers as they extract tactile information. Even though the study of whisking has a long history, the details of individual whisker movements bilaterally, of nose movement, of stereotypy and variability in an active whisking to touch behavior are unknown. Here we trained five head-fixed male and 11 female mice in a go-cue task to move a whisker to touch a sensor. Our analysis of orofacial movements shows that mice specifically control movement of th

Fabrication and evaluation of a chitin whisker/poly(L-lactide) composite scaffold by the direct trisolvent-ink writing method for bone tissue engineering.

Although poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) based porous scaffolds have been widely fabricated through 3D printing, their poor mechanical properties and osteogenic activity still do not meet the needs of bone tissue repair. Herein, chitin whiskers (CHWs), having outstanding mechanical properties, excellent cell affinity, osteogenic activity, etc. were designed to introduce into the PLLA matrix. Moreover, a trisolvent system, including dichloromethane (DCM), 2-butoxyethanlol (2-Bu) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP), instead of a single solvent system of DCM was chosen to prepare CHW/PLLA (CP) composite inks. Barrels by the sea: Barrels XX meeting report.

The 20th annual Barrels meeting brought together researchers who utilize behavioral, physiological, anatomical, and molecular techniques to understand the structure and function of the barrel system. Barrels XX featured talks on the role inhibition has in shaping cortical responses within the barrel system, the molecular cues that influence the development of the whisker-to-barrel system, and the synaptic plasticity that can shape responses within the system. The meeting highlighted why the whisker-to-barrel system is an ideal model to investigate the development of cortical circuitry and how
