The Paradox of Interactive Media: The Potential for Video Games and Virtual Reality as Tools for Violence Prevention.

Interactive media such as video games and virtual reality (VR) provide users with lived experiences that may be dangerous or even impossible in daily life. By providing interactive experiences in highly authentic, detail-rich contexts, these technologies have demonstrated measurable success in impacting how people think, feel, and behave in the physical world. At the same time, violent interactive media content has been historically connected with a range of antisocial effects in both popular press and academic research. Extant literature has established a small-but-statistically significant e

Hands Up! Atypical Defensive Reactions in Heavy Players of Violent Video Games When Exposed to Gun-Attack Pictures.

Threatening cues and surrounding contexts trigger specific defensive response patterns. Posturography, a technique for measuring postural strategies, has been used to evaluate motor defensive reactions in humans. When exposed to gun pointed pictures, humans were shown to exhibit an immobility reaction. Short and long-term exposure to violent video games was shown to be a causal risk factor for increased violent and aggressive behavior. Assaultive violence with a gun is a major trigger for motor defensive reactions, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most characteristic psychiatri

Action video games improve reading abilities and visual-to-auditory attentional shifting in English-speaking children with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties in learning to read and there is some evidence that action video games (AVG), without any direct phonological or orthographic stimulation, improve reading efficiency in Italian children with dyslexia. However, the cognitive mechanism underlying this improvement and the extent to which the benefits of AVG training would generalize to deep English orthography, remain two critical questions. During reading acquisition, children have to integrate written letters with speech sounds, rapidly shifting their attention from visual to auditory modality. In our s

Active video games to promote physical activity in children with cancer: a randomized clinical trial with follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Low levels of physical activity, musculoskeletal morbidity and weight gain are commonly reported problems in children with cancer. Intensive medical treatment and a decline in physical activity may also result in reduced motor performance. Therefore, simple and inexpensive ways to promote physical activity and exercise are becoming an increasingly important part of children's cancer treatment. METHODS: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of active video games in promotion of physical activity in children with cancer. The research is conducted as a parallel randomized c

Energy metabolism during activity-promoting video games practice in subjects with spinal cord injury: evidences for health promotion.

BACKGROUND: Activity promoting video game (APVG) practice significantly affects energy metabolism through energy expenditure (EE) increase and has been recently included in strategies for health promotion. It is not known if the APVG practice provides similar outcomes in subjects with spinal cord injury (SCI). AIM: Aim of the study was to evaluate cardio-pulmonary and metabolic adaptations during APVG practice and to find whether EE increase above resting condition could suggest the inclusion of this exercise in a more general strategy for health promotion and body weight control in subjects

Game changer? Cognitive-motor effects of VR exergaming compared to video-based training.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Virtual reality (VR) exergaming enhances several cognitive domains through multisensory engagement. Acute cognitive benefits of VR are established, but evidence for direct comparisons with non-immersive controls is limited. This study aimed to determine whether VR exercise provides additional cognitive and cognitive-motor benefits beyond a matched non-immersive active stick-fight video (SFV) intervention, and whether effects persist after training. METHODS: In this randomized quasi-experimental study, N = 55 healthy adults (VR: n = 30; SFV: n = 25; 25.5 ± 7.1 years; 41.8

[Regulating the video game industry from a public health perspective: the case of loot boxes].

Loot boxes constitute a monetization mechanism integrated into many video games, which are considered as akin to gambling. Existing research indicates consistent associations among loot box engagement, addictive behaviors (such as symptoms of gaming and gambling disorders), financial problems, and psychiatric symptoms. The presence of loot boxes in video games is now widely considered as a public health concern. In Switzerland, Parliamentary Postulate 23.3004, titled "Protection against additional features in video games (microtransactions)", was submitted to the National council in 2023 and r

Untangling the role of emotion regulation in gambling and video gaming cravings: A replication and extension study.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence suggests that urgency-the tendency to act rashly under intense positive or negative affect-reflects dysregulated incidental emotion regulation (ER). Urgency has been reported to predict the intensity and frequency of video gaming and gambling craving, but not the translation of craving onto severity of problem symptoms. However, the role of intentional ER strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, in craving control remains underexplored. METHOD: 303 regular gamblers and 355 regular video gamers were assessed on urgency traits, ER strat

Design and evaluation of a serious video game to treat preschool children with speech sound disorders.

Speech sound disorder (SSD) is one of the most common communication disorders in children, which must be diagnosed and treated in childhood to prevent its negative psychological, occupational, and social consequences in adulthood. The use of serious games is one technology that could help treat SSD. This study aims to design and evaluate the usability of a digital game for 3-6-year-old children. This developmental study was carried out in three main stages: determining information requirements, designing and developing a digital game, and evaluating the usability of the designed game. In the f

Violent Video Game Exposure and Cyberbullying in Early Adolescents: A Latent Moderated Mediation Model.

Violent video game exposure (VVGE) is a significant predictor of adolescent cyberbullying perpetration. However, little is known about the mediating and moderated mechanisms between them. This study examined the mediating role of moral disengagement between VVGE and cyberbullying perpetration as well as the moderating role of callous-unemotional (CU) traits on those associations. A total of 2,523 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 13.22, SD = 1.60, 48.4 percent girls) participated this study. Structural equation modeling showed that VVGE was significantly related to cyberbullying perpetration and mor

Neural bases of enhanced attentional control: Lessons from action video game players.

OBJECTIVES: The ability to resist distraction and focus on-task-relevant information while being responsive to changes in the environment is fundamental to goal-directed behavior. Such attentional control abilities are regulated by a constant interplay between previously characterized bottom-up and top-down attentional networks. Here we ask about the neural changes within these two attentional networks that may mediate enhanced attentional control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address this question, we contrasted action video game players (AVGPs) and nonvideo game players (NVGPs) in a Posner-cue

Video game loot boxes are linked to problem gambling: Results of a large-scale survey.

Loot boxes are items in video games that can be paid for with real-world money and contain randomised contents. In recent years, loot boxes have become increasingly common. There is concern in the research community that similarities between loot boxes and gambling may lead to increases in problem gambling amongst gamers. A large-scale survey of gamers (n = 7,422) found evidence for a link (η2 = 0.054) between the amount that gamers spent on loot boxes and the severity of their problem gambling. This link was stronger than a link between problem gambling and buying other in-game items with rea

On finding the C in CBT: the challenges of applying gambling-related cognitive approaches to video-gaming.

Many similarities have been drawn between the activities of gambling and video-gaming. Both are repetitive activities with intermittent reinforcement, decision-making opportunities, and elements of risk-taking. As a result, it might be tempting to believe that cognitive strategies that are used to treat problem gambling might also be applied to problematic video gaming. In this paper, we argue that many cognitive approaches to gambling that typically involve a focus on erroneous beliefs about probabilities and randomness are not readily applicable to video gaming. Instead, we encourage a focus

Impact of the motion and visual complexity of the background on players' performance in video game-like displays.

The visual interfaces of virtual environments such as video games often show scenes where objects are superimposed on a moving background. Three experiments were designed to better understand the impact of the complexity and/or overall motion of two types of visual backgrounds often used in video games on the detection and use of superimposed, stationary items. The impact of background complexity and motion was assessed during two typical video game tasks: a relatively complex visual search task and a classic, less demanding shooting task. Background motion impaired participants' performance o
