People with dyslexia and heart, chest, skin, digestive, musculoskeletal, vision, learning, speech and mental disorders were more dissatisfied with neighbourhoods: Scottish Household Survey, 2007-2008.

Rarely do we know the perception toward neighbourhoods in people specifically with health conditions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to understand the perception toward neighbourhoods among adults with a series of the existing health conditions in a country-wide and population-based setting. Data were retrieved from and analysed in Scottish Household Survey, 2007-2008. Information on demographics, self-reported health conditions and perception toward neighbourhoods and the surrounding facilities was obtained by household interview. Analysis including chi-square test, t test and lo

Exploring the association between nutrition knowledge and generalized anxiety disorder among young adults in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: implications for Saudi Vision 2030.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety is the most prevalent mental health issue in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), particularly among young adults, who face significant challenges in managing it, such as social stigma surrounding mental health, which may also discourage them from seeking help. Within the context of Saudi Vision 2030, addressing challenges and promoting the overall health and psychological wellbeing of the population is a vital public health objective. Consequently, it is suggested that exploring the potential role of nutrition knowledge as a strategy to promote overall health and wellbeing w

Facial data for autism spectrum disorder detection using machine learning, deep learning, and emerging large language and vision-language models: A systematic review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition whose timely identification can support earlier intervention. Conventional assessment relies on specialist observation and caregiver reports, motivating research into computer-aided screening using facial and behavioral data. This systematic review examines 171 studies published between 2016 and May 2026. It synthesizes machine learning and deep learning approaches to ASD assessment using static facial images, facial video, eye tracking, and multimodal data containing a facial signal. It also covers large language models, vision-

Automated, Vision-Based Goniometry and Range of Motion Calculation in Individuals With Suspected Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes/Generalized Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders: A Comparison of Pose-Estimation Libraries to Goniometric Measurements.

Generalized joint hypermobility (GJH) often leads clinicians to suspect a diagnosis of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), but it can be difficult to objectively assess. Video-based goniometry has been proposed to objectively estimate joint range of motion in hyperextended joints. As part of an exam of joint hypermobility at a specialized EDS clinic, a mobile phone was used to record short videos of 97 adults (89 female, 35.0 ± 9.9 years old) undergoing assessment of the elbows, knees, shoulders, ankles, and fifth fingers. Five body keypoint pose-estimation libraries (AlphaPose, Detectron, MediaPipe

Acute gastroenteritis and unilateral vision loss leading to a diagnosis of aquaporin-4-IgG seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum of disorders in a child: A case of atypical optic neuritis in the era of biomarkers.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum of disorders is a rare cause of optic neuritis in children. It is a critical diagnosis requiring urgent management, with delays carrying both life- and sight-threatening complications. Most of the published literature on this entity is in adult patients, with only a few case reports to guide management in the paediatric population. The purpose of this article is to shareour experience in the management of this condition in a child, and thus hopefully add to the limited body of knowledge currently available.

Cortical blindness and not optic neuritis as a cause of vision loss in a Sjögren's syndrome (SS) patient with the neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD): Challenges of ascribing demyelinating syndromes to SS: a case report.

RATIONALE: The conception that multiple sclerosis may be challenging to distinguish from demyelinating manifestations of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) was introduced more than 30 years ago. However, it is now recognized that the neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) may occur more frequently in SS as opposed to multiple sclerosis. Characteristic NMOSD features can include severe attacks of optic neuritis, myelitis which is frequently longitudinally-extensive (spanning at least three vertebral segments on magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]), and an association with anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies.

BRAIN AND EYE AS POTENTIAL TARGETS FOR IONIZING RADIATION IMPACT. PART IV - FETAL RADIATION-INDUCED BINOCULAR VISION DISORDERS: A PILOT STUDY. IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL CHANGES OF NON/IRRADIATED EYEBALL MUSCLES AFFECTED BY STRABISMUS. EVIDENCE OF A POSSIBLE MECHANISM OF THE STRABISMUS DEVELOPMENT IN PERSONS EXPOSED TO FETAL RADIATION.

UNLABELLED: Strabismus is a significant cause of a decrease in the functional capabilities of the organ of vision, additionally, it leads to the deteriorating quality of life. Orbital factors and nervous system changes may play an important role in strabismus pathogenesis. There are few reports on binocular vision disorders in radiation-exposed persons.Functions of the external eyeball muscles might be disturbed based on the changed coordination process of subcortical nerve structures and due to altered metabolism. A carefully conducted research is necessary to clarify the possible pathogenesi

Visual discomfort and contact lens wear: A review.

The purpose of this manuscript is to describe how vision influences contact lens discomfort and review the evidence supporting the hypothesis that contact lens discomfort can be caused by vision and vision-related disorders. Contact lens discomfort is a misunderstood and difficult to manage clinical condition. Most treatments and strategies aimed at alleviating discomfort focus on optimizing the contact lens fit and its relationship with the ocular surface, but these strategies commonly fail at relieving discomfort symptoms. Many vision and vision-related disorders share symptoms with those re

Absolute and relative morbidity burdens attributable to ocular and vision-related conditions, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2018.

The current report used an ocular and vision disease classification system and several healthcare burden measures to quantify the impacts of various ocular and vision-related illnesses and injuries among active component service members of the U.S. Armed Forces during 2018. More service members received care for refractive error and related disorders than any other ocular and vision-related major category; this category accounted for slightly more than one-half (51.1%) of all ocular and vision-related medical encounters. Conjunctival disorders accounted for the next highest percentage of total

Visual impairment in persons with psychotic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Persons with psychotic disorder may have poorer visual acuity (VA). The aim of the study is to investigate in a general population the prevalence of impaired habitual VA and self-reported difficulties in vision among persons with different psychotic disorders. METHOD: A nationally representative sample of 6,663 persons aged 30 or older whose binocular VA for distance and for near vision was measured with current spectacles, if any. Diagnostic assessment of DSM-IV psychotic disorders used both SCID interview and case note data. Life-time ever diagnoses of psychotic disorders were c

The eye in neurology: evaluation of sudden visual loss and diplopia--diagnostic pointers and pitfalls.

The evaluation of sudden visual loss should begin with the differentiation between monocular loss and binocular loss. The importance of this is reflected in the differences between the main causes of monocular and binocular losses. In cases of transient monocular visual loss, an ocular cause has to be kept in mind so as to avoid unnecessary and costly cerebrovascular investigations. In cases of persistent monocular visual loss, a compressive lesion of the optic nerve or chiasma may simulate optic neuritis. In the evaluation of diplopia, the main differential diagnoses are nerve lesions and mya

[Functional diagnostic options for advanced and end stage glaucoma].

The visual functional diagnostics for patients with advanced glaucomatous optic neuropathy are subject to challenge. Reduced visual acuity, instable fixation and extensive scotomata frequently lead to incorrect results within the central 30° or 24° field. Static automatic perimetry (SAP) in particular is often hampered by extended examination time and fatigue especially in older patients. Focusing of the examination towards the central 10° field using a dense test grid (2° distance between stimulus locations) allows a more exact assessment of the small remaining central island. Tailoring the e

Subtle binocular vision anomalies in migraine.

A literature review reveals old references to an association between migraine headache and binocular vision anomalies, but a lack of scientific evidence evaluating these claims. In a masked case control study, we investigated binocular vision using standard clinical tests in people with migraine and in controls. Some test results suggest that heterophoria and fixation disparity are more common in the migraine group. The migraine group also had slightly reduced stereopsis. We found significant correlations between some migraine variables and some binocular vision variables (e.g., duration of wo

Visual influences on balance.

This paper discusses the impact of vision on balance and orientation in patients with vestibular disorders and in anxiety patients with space and motion discomfort (SMD). When the vestibular system is impaired, vision has a greater influence on standing postural control, resulting in greater sway when individuals are presented with erroneous or conflicting visual cues. Studies have shown that individuals with other motion sensitivities, such as motion sickness, also tend to rely on vision for balance and do not disregard erroneous visual cues. Recently, patients with anxiety disorders that inc

Vision therapy and orthoptics.

Vision therapy by orthoptists is a form of treatment to restore binocular single vision and to enhance the control of a deviation using prisms and convergence therapy. It is differentiated from optometric behavioral vision therapy (BVT) as a form of treatment to decrease rates ofjuvenile recidivism and to improve learning disabilities using colored overlays and tools such as trampolines. Evidence-based findings of randomized controlled clinical trials versus conclusions drawn from nonrandomized, poorly controlled studies of various forms of vision therapy are explored. Concrete evidence in the
