A Rhesus Monkey With a Naturally Occurring Impairment of Disparity Vergence. I. Behavioral Comparisons to Vergence in a Normal Animal.

PURPOSE: Human children with disorders affecting vergence eye movements have difficulty during close work, such as reading. Patients with convergence insufficiency show a receded near point and an exophoria that is greater at near than at far. Neurologic abnormalities may underlie these symptoms, but it is difficult to test this idea directly because there is no animal model for this disorder. In the present case report, we describe behavioral testing in a rhesus monkey with a naturally occurring impairment of vergence eye movements (monkey CI). METHODS: Three monkeys were trained to perform

Adaptation to interocular differences in blur.

Adaptation to a blurred image causes a physically focused image to appear too sharp, and shifts the point of subjective focus toward the adapting blur, consistent with a renormalization of perceived focus. We examined whether and how this adaptation normalizes to differences in blur between the two eyes, which can routinely arise from differences in refractive errors. Observers adapted to images filtered to simulate optical defocus or different axes of astigmatism, as well as to images that were isotropically blurred or sharpened by varying the slope of the amplitude spectrum. Adaptation to th

The frequency of horizontal saccades in near and far symmetrical disparity vergence.

In a natural environment, saccade and vergence eye movements shift gaze in different directions and distances. In a laboratory setting, targets can be positioned precisely to elicit symmetrical vergence movements; however, saccades occur during the vergence movement even though the stimulus should not stimulate a saccadic response. These saccades may facilitate the response when the kinematics of the vergence component are modest as indicated by reduced velocities. Hence, the purpose of this study is to assess whether the frequency of saccades within vergence responses are correlated with verg

Interpreting the multifocal visual evoked potential: the effects of refractive errors, cataracts, and fixation errors.

AIM: To understand how refractive errors, cataracts, and fixation errors affect multifocal visual evoked potential (mfVEP) responses. METHODS: Monocular mfVEP responses were obtained using a pattern reversal dartboard display. For the control condition, visual acuity was corrected to > or =20/20 and foveal fixation was maintained. The right eye was tested under the following conditions: simulated refractive error, simulated cataract, steady eccentric fixation, and unsteady fixation. RESULTS: No subject demonstrated significant abnormalities under control conditions. For the simulated refract

Inter-ocular temporal asynchrony (IOTA): psychophysical measurement of inter-ocular asymmetry of visual latency.

Ocular pathology can be associated with inter-ocular asymmetry of conduction latency. We describe a relatively low-cost psychophysical method of quantifying this asymmetry of delay, an 'inter-ocular temporal asynchrony' (IOTA) system. Testing of 28 visually normal young adults gave IOTA results with a mean of 0.11 ms (SD +/- 2.4 ms). These results correspond to 95% confidence limits of -4.6 ms and +4.8 ms. Inter-ocular differences in retinal illumination, induced by using monocular neutral density filters in visually normal subjects, significantly affected IOTA in accord with an imposed percep

Effects of a two-diopter vertical prism on posture.

Postural control in upright stance requires the central integration of visual, vestibular, somatosensory (as cutaneous receptors) and proprioceptive (as joint receptors) inputs. Clinical studies seem to indicate an association between vertical heterophoria (VH) and balance control. The purpose of the study was to simulate a VH and examine its influence on body stabilisation in quiet stance. We studied 15 healthy subjects (25.6+/-3.0 years). The postural stability was measured with a platform under the following conditions: normal viewing, with a two-diopter prism base down placed on the domina

Evaluation of a new criterion of binocularity.

The purpose of this study was to assess a new criterion for binocular comfort analogous to the classical Sheard's criterion. Instead of equating the fusional demand with the monocular phoria as is done when Sheard's criterion is applied, the new criterion uses a calculated binocular fusional demand. The binocular demand was derived using a clinical measurement of the convergence accommodation per convergence (CA/C) ratio. Sheard's criterion was also evaluated. Other commonly used indicators of binocularity (heterophoria, vergences, accommodative amplitude, facility and response, fixation dispa

The roles of sex and gender in women's eye health disparities in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, women are at a higher risk of developing vision impairment or a serious eye disease (such as age-related macular degeneration, thyroid eye disease, or chronic dry eye disease) than men. Disparities in eye diseases due to biology widen even further when considering factors such as social determinants of health; gaps in research data, literature, and policy; insufficient provider and patient education; and limitations in screening and treatment options. Sex and gender disparities in eye health are clinically under-addressed and burdensome on both patient quality

The Human Brain in Depth: How We See in 3D.

Human perception is remarkably flexible: We experience vivid three-dimensional (3D) structure under diverse conditions, from the seemingly random magic-eye stereograms to the aesthetically beautiful, but obviously flat, canvases of the Old Masters. How does the brain achieve this apparently effortless robustness? Using brain imaging we are beginning to discover how different parts of the visual cortex support 3D perception by tracing different computations in the dorsal and ventral pathways. This review concentrates on studies of binocular disparity and its combination with other depth cues. T

Monocular Versus Binocular Calibrations in Evaluating Fixation Disparity With a Video-Based Eye-Tracker.

When measuring fixation disparity (an oculomotor vergence error), the question arises as to whether a monocular or binocular calibration is more precise and physiologically more appropriate. In monocular calibrations, a single eye fixates on a calibration target that is taken as having been projected onto the center of the fovea; the corresponding vergence state represents the heterophoria (the resting vergence position), which has no effect on the calibration procedure. In binocular calibrations, a vergence error may be present and may affect the subsequent measurement of the fixation dispari

Binocular cross-correlation analyses of the effects of high-order aberrations on the stereoacuity of eyes with keratoconus.

Stereoacuity losses are induced by increased magnitudes and interocular differences in high-order aberrations (HOAs). This study used keratoconus as a model to investigate the impact of HOAs on disparity processing and stereoacuity. HOAs and stereoacuity were quantified in subjects with keratoconus (n = 21) with HOAs uncorrected (wearing spectacles) or minimized (wearing rigid gas-permeable contact lenses) and in control subjects without keratoconus (n = 5) for 6-mm pupil diameters. Disparity signal quality was estimated using metrics derived from binocular cross-correlation functions of stere

Computational Mechanisms for Perceptual Stability using Disparity and Motion Parallax.

Walking and other forms of self-motion create global motion patterns across our eyes. With the resulting stream of visual signals, how do we perceive ourselves as moving through a stable world? Although the neural mechanisms are largely unknown, human studies (Warren and Rushton, 2009) provide strong evidence that the visual system is capable of parsing the global motion into two components: one due to self-motion and the other due to independently moving objects. In the present study, we use computational modeling to investigate potential neural mechanisms for stabilizing visual perception du

Ocular prevalence: difference between crossed and uncrossed disparities of stereo objects.

BACKGROUND: Many observers perceive a horizontal offset between a stereoscopically viewed object and a reference object in the fixation plane, although both objects are presented along a single line that projects through the midpoint between both eyes. These observers weigh one eye more than the other when determining the visual directions of stereo objects. This unequal weighting has been called ocular prevalence. We considered that ocular prevalence might be asymmetric, that is, different for crossed and uncrossed stereo disparities. METHODS: We examined 11 subjects with normal eyes and a s

Vertical vergence adaptation for normal and hyperphoric patients.

This paper discusses the use of vertical fixation disparity (VFD) measurements to determine a patient's ability to adapt to vertical prism. Vertical vergence adaptation for orthophoric patients, hyperphoric patients, and patients with vertical deviations associated with superior oblique paresis is reported. The effect of orthoptic training on the ability to adapt to vertical prism is also reported.

A Battery of Quantitative Binocular Vision Tests for Adults: Testing Protocols.

Sensory fusion and stereopsis are two crucial components of binocular depth perception. Current clinical tests do not provide a quantitative measure of sensory fusion and assess limited aspects of stereopsis. More importantly, patients who show no binocular fusion in standard clinical tests can demonstrate binocular integration and perceive depth from binocular disparity and motion cues, suggesting that current tests are insufficient to examine all aspects of binocularity. A battery of eight tests is presented here to provide a comprehensive assessment of binocular vision. These tests are desi

Specialized contributions of mid-tier stages of dorsal and ventral pathways to stereoscopic processing in macaque.

The division of labor between the dorsal and ventral visual pathways has been well studied, but not often with direct comparison at the single-neuron resolution with matched stimuli. Here we directly compared how single neurons in MT and V4, mid-tier areas of the two pathways, process binocular disparity, a powerful cue for 3D perception and actions. We found that MT neurons transmitted disparity signals more quickly and robustly, whereas V4 or its upstream neurons transformed the signals into sophisticated representations more prominently. Therefore, signaling speed and robustness were traded

The role of binocular disparity and active motion parallax in cybersickness.

Cybersickness is an enduring problem for users of virtual environments. While it is generally assumed that cybersickness is caused by discrepancies in perceived self-motion between the visual and vestibular systems, little is known about the relative contribution of active motion parallax and binocular disparity to the occurrence of cybersickness. We investigated the role of these two depth cues in cybersickness by simulating a roller-coaster ride using a head-mounted display. Participants could see the tracks via a virtual frame placed at the front of the roller-coaster cart. We manipulated t

The Case for Primary Eye Care Integration in Community Health Centers.

In this Commentary, we provide an in-depth look at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) report, "Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative Vision for Tomorrow (2016)," which emphasizes the need for the integration of vision and eye care into more holistic healthcare delivery approaches, since many individuals who are visually impaired have disproportionately high rates of chronic co-morbidities. We have highlighted current barriers as well as a coordinated approach and methodology to improve team-based care in the United States to reduce eye and vision h
