Vocabulary Intervention for Students With Learning Disabilities in Grades 3 to 8: A Synthesis of 50 Years of Research.

This systematic review examined 63 vocabulary interventions for students with learning disabilities (LD) in Grades 3 to 8, reported 1978-2023. The review focused on instructional approaches, depth of processing, dosage, outcome measures, and study quality. Interventions included direct (n = 33), mnemonic (n = 20), strategic (n = 6), or combined (n = 4) approaches. Interventions lasted no more than 14 weeks, with the exception of one multiyear program. Mnemonic instruction was the most time-efficient, followed by direct, combined, and strategic approaches. Twenty-one studies (11 group design, 1

Unique and Combined Effects of Small-Group Fraction Vocabulary and Arithmetic Interventions for Students With Mathematical Difficulties.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a fraction vocabulary intervention with fraction arithmetic components on fraction vocabulary knowledge and fraction arithmetic competencies among fourth-grade Chinese students with mathematics difficulties. We randomly assigned 70 students with mathematics difficulties to three conditions: fraction vocabulary only (n = 23), fraction vocabulary with an arithmetic component (n = 23), and a business-as-usual (BaU) condition (n = 24). The students in the fraction vocabulary intervention conditions participated in 10 sessions, occurring three

The use of gestures in book reading and play situations related to vocabulary in young children with cochlear implants.

Gestures are essential in early language development. We investigate the use of gestures in children with cochlear implants (CIs), with a particular focus on deictic, iconic, and conventional gestures. The aim is to understand how the use of gestures in everyday interactions relates to age, vocabulary testing results, and language development reported by parents. Seven children with CIs, aged 27-39 months, participated in the study. The children's use of gestures was analysed in caregivers' video recordings of daily life interactions. The Picture Naming Game was used to test vocabulary. The Sw

Direct Neural Evidence for the Contrastive Roles of the Complementary Learning Systems in Adult Acquisition of Native Vocabulary.

The Complementary Learning Systems (CLS) theory provides a powerful framework for considering the acquisition, consolidation, and generalization of new knowledge. We tested this proposed neural division of labor in adults through an investigation of the consolidation and long-term retention of newly learned native vocabulary with post-learning functional neuroimaging. Newly learned items were compared with two conditions: 1) previously known items to highlight the similarities and differences with established vocabulary and 2) unknown/untrained items to provide a control for non-specific perce

Sensitivity to amplitude envelope rise time in infancy and vocabulary development at 3 years: A significant relationship.

Here we report, for the first time, a relationship between sensitivity to amplitude envelope rise time in infants and their later vocabulary development. Recent research in auditory neuroscience has revealed that amplitude envelope rise time plays a mechanistic role in speech encoding. Accordingly, individual differences in infant discrimination of amplitude envelope rise times could be expected to relate to individual differences in language acquisition. A group of 50 infants taking part in a longitudinal study contributed rise time discrimination thresholds when aged 7 and 10 months, and the

Process dissociation of sight vocabulary and phonetic decoding in reading: a new perspective on surface and phonological dyslexias.

Recent research on developmental dyslexia has suggested a phonological core deficit hypothesis (e.g., Manis, Seidenberg, Doi, McBride-Chang, & Peterson, 1996; Stanovich, Siegel, & Gottardo, 1997) whereby pure cases of developmental phonological dyslexia (dysfunctional phonetic decoding processing but normal sight vocabulary processing) can exist, but pure cases of developmental surface dyslexia (dysfunctional sight vocabulary processing but normal phonetic decoding processing) should not. By applying Jacoby's (1991) and Lindsay and Jacoby's (1994) process dissociation procedure to the reading

MQADet: a plug-and-play paradigm for enhancing open-vocabulary object detection via multimodal question answering.

Open-vocabulary detection (OVD) aims to detect and classify objects from an unrestricted set of categories, including those unseen during training. Existing open-vocabulary detectors often suffer from visual-textual misalignment and long-tailed category imbalance, leading to poor performance when handling objects described by complex, long-tailed textual queries. To overcome these challenges, we propose Multimodal Question Answering Detection (MQADet), a universal plug-and-play paradigm that enhances existing open-vocabulary detectors by leveraging the cross-modal reasoning capabilities of mul

Expressive Vocabulary in Mandarin-Speaking Autistic, Developmentally Delayed, and Typically Developing Children: A Cross-sectional Study.

PURPOSE: Research investigating the characteristics of expressive vocabulary in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is limited, particularly in cross-linguistic contexts. This study aimed to systematically identify the characteristics of expressive vocabulary in 3- to 6-year-old Mandarin-speaking children with ASD. METHODS: We analyzed 10-min spontaneous language samples from parent-child free play sessions involving 21 children with ASD, 18 developmentally matched children with developmental delay (DD), and 15 chronologically age-matched typically developing (TD) children. Late bloomer or language disorder? Differences in toddler vocabulary composition associated with long-term language outcomes.

Children with delays in expressive language (late talkers) have heterogeneous developmental trajectories. Some are late bloomers who eventually "catch-up," but others have persisting delays or are later diagnosed with developmental language disorder (DLD). Early in development it is unclear which children will belong to which group. We compare the toddler vocabulary composition of late talkers with different long-term outcomes. The literature suggests most children with typical development (TD) have vocabularies dominated by names for categories organized by similarity in shape (e.g., cup), wh

Working memory and vocabulary knowledge sustain activation of the literal meaning of metaphors during sentence comprehension.

Metaphors convey meanings beyond their literal interpretation, requiring individuals to rely on linguistic and cognitive resources beyond those used for literal language. Models of metaphor comprehension propose different routes to deriving metaphorical content. The indirect-access model suggests that literal meaning is accessed first and then rejected if context demands, whereas the direct-access model argues that metaphorical content is retrieved automatically without an initial literal interpretation. However, previous research has yielded mixed findings on this issue. We examine whether in

OVR-GS: Open-Vocabulary 3D Object Removal via Semantic Gaussian Selection and Local Diffusion-Guided Completion.

Camera-reconstructed 3D scenes often require offline visual cleanup before inspection, presentation, or reuse as renderable virtual-scene assets. Representative applications include removing temporary furniture, parked vehicles, equipment, signage, and other distracting or obsolete objects from reconstructed indoor and outdoor environments. Such editing requires not only accurate target localization across viewpoints but also plausible recovery of the previously occluded background. Existing methods often depend on manually specified masks or category-restricted detectors, while projection-bas

Etiology of hearing loss affects auditory skill development and vocabulary development in pediatric cochlear implantation cases.

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implantation (CI) is an effective treatment for severe-to-profound hearing loss patients and is currently used as the standard therapeutic option worldwide. However, the outcomes of CI vary among patients. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the clinical features for each etiological group as well as the effects of etiology on CI outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected clinical information for 308 pediatric cochlear implant cases, including the etiology, hearing thresholds, age at CI, early auditory skill development, total development, monosyllable percep

Effectiveness of intervention focused on vocational course vocabulary in post-16 students with (developmental) language disorder.

BACKGROUND: People with language disorders (including developmental language disorder-DLD) often struggle to learn new words and, for young adults, this could affect their success in future work. Therefore, it is crucial to support their learning of career-specific vocabulary. However, little published evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of speech and language intervention for older adolescents and young adults with (developmental) language disorder (D)LD within a post-16 provision. AIMS: To investigate whether for students with (D)LD in a post-16 environment, the addition of direct i

"One Nature": A New Vocabulary and Frame for Governance Innovation in Post-COVID-19 Planetary Health.

Health futures are not preordained, nor are they entirely predictable by extrapolation from the past. This is particularly relevant in an era of unprecedented uncertainties converging from the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple zoonotic outbreaks for the past two decades, and the climate crisis currently unfolding. Moreover, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services cautioned in 2019 that around one million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. Human existence and medical innovations are closely intertwined with preservation and sustainabi

Factors affecting vocabulary acquisition at age 2 in children born between 23 and 28 weeks' gestation.

Language development is often slower in preterm children compared with their term peers. We investigated factors associated with vocabulary acquisition at 2 years in a cohort of children born at 28 weeks' gestation or less. For children entered into the United Kingdom Oscillation Study, language development was evaluated by using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories score, completed by parents as part of a developmental questionnaire. The effect of demographic, neonatal, socioeconomic factors, growth, and disability were investigated using multifactorial random effects mod

Metacognitive Monitoring in Reading Comprehension: Examining the Role of Cognitive Flexibility, Vocabulary, and Fluency in Young Readers.

This study examined associations between vocabulary knowledge, reading fluency, cognitive flexibility, and metacognitive monitoring accuracy in reading comprehension among fifth-grade students. Participants (N = 104) completed measures of cognitive-linguistic abilities and reading comprehension, with global metacomprehension judgments after reading and item-level confidence ratings. Metacognitive monitoring accuracy was assessed using calibration of global metacomprehension judgments and item-level confidence ratings. Calibration bias (confidence minus performance) indexed miscalibration direc
