Partial laryngectomy for vocal cord cancer with marked limitation or fixation of the vocal cord.

Partial laryngectomy was the procedure utilized to treat 26 patients with either marked limitation of vocal cord motion or fixation. The absolute 24-month tumor free control rate was 73% (19 of 26). Extended hemilaryngectomy with cricoid resection should be performed if subglottic extension of 5 mm or greater is present. Extended hemilaryngectomy has a greater complication rate than the classical hemilaryngectomy.

Inspiratory activation of the vocal cord adductor, part I: human study in patients with restricted abduction of the vocal cords.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: In patients with restricted abduction of the vocal cords, it has generally been accepted that glottis narrowing with laryngeal stridor during inspiration is attributed to static and passive obstruction of the glottis. However, active glottis narrowing can also be contributory. We tested the hypothesis that the vocal cord adductor is activated during inspiration in patients with restricted abduction of the vocal cords. STUDY DESIGN: Electromyographic evaluation of vocal cord adductor activity in patients with restricted abduction of the vocal cords. METHODS: Five patien

An unusual surgical complication: Slipped molar lodged in vocal cords and its anesthetic management.

BACKGROUND: Extraction of wisdom tooth is one of the most common surgical interventions, as it is more prone for impaction. Due to the pain and anxiety associated with the procedure, it is common to do this procedure under conscious sedation. However unexpected events do occur during the procedure and one such complication along with the prompt management is discussed here. CASE REPORT: This case report details an unusual occurrence of a third molar tooth slipping during dental extraction and becoming lodged at the base of the vocal cords. The patient, a 52-year-old man with a history of hype

Structure and Function of the Vocal Cords after Airway Reconstruction on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Dysphonia is a common problem at long-term follow-up after airway surgery for laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) with major impact on quality of life. Dysphonia after LTS can be caused by scar tissue from initial stenosis along with anatomical alterations after surgery. There is need for a modality to noninvasively image structure and function of the reconstructed upper airways including the vocal cords to assess voice outcome and possible treatment after LTS. Our objective was to correlate vocal cord structure and function of patients after airway reconstruction for LTS on

[Relationship between voice spectrum analysis and psychoacoustic evaluation in patients with vocal cords polyps].

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the significance of selected acoustic parameters, to determine their usfulness in monitoring effects of treatments, to correlate them to other clinical voice tests (such as aerodynamic measurements, stroboscopic examination, psychoacoustic evaluation), and to determin if there were correlations among the acoustic parameters. The results showed that pitch perturbation quotient (PPQ), amplitude perturbation quotient (APQ), normalized noise energy a and b (NNEa and NNEb) were positively related to the regularity (REG) in the vocal cord polyp. In the pre

[Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity measured by ESR-spin trapping method in canine vocal cords].

Recently, superoxide dismutase (SOD) has been regarded as a scavenger of superoxide radical which is a important factor of 'reperfusion injury' in ischemic heart or in brain disorder. Its low activity means cell susceptibility to the superoxide radical in tissues. The SOD activity was examined in ten canine larynges after phonation by a electron spin resonance (ESR)-spin-trapping method. The values of mean SOD activity at the middle part of the membranous vocal cord, the vocal process of the arytenoid and the subglottal portion were 67.84 +/- 11.06 U/ml/g, 121.94 +/- 19.46U/ml/g and 115.46 +/-

[The implication of the cricothyroid muscle in paralysis of the vocal cords (author's transl)].

A report is given about one patient with bilateral paralysis of the vocal cords. After local anesthesia of the piriform sinus and novocain blockade of the R. externus of the superior laryngeal nerve of the same side a widening of the glottis and an improvement of the respiration was observed. After section of the R. externus of the superior laryngeal nerve we could observe even an improvement of the same effect as it has been observed after local anaesthesia. These observations were proved by spirography and photo-documentation. Because of paradox movements of the vocal cords a narrowing of th

The evaluation of treatment of patients with extensive squamous cancer of the vocal cords.

Fifty-one patients with previously untreated squamous carcinoma originating on the true vocal cord, staged T4, were analyzed. Forty-eight of the 51 patients were selected for treatment. Total laryngectomy was the minimal surgical procedure, and the pathologist confirmed the presence of cancer outside the confines of the larynx in 47 of 48 patients. Seventy-three percent of the patients were thought clinically to have negative nodes, but examination by the pathologist showed a 20 percent false negative rate in this evaluation. Twenty-one percent of the patients had received an emergency tracheo

Bilateral vocal cords paralysis requiring urgent tracheostomy on COVID-19 patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 infection has many manifestations, including otolaryngological symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man with severe dyspnea underwent endotracheal intubation followed by 68 h of mechanical ventilation. After extubation, he left the ICU without any significant complications. Four days after the extubation, he developed dyspnea, which deteriorated the next 2 days, and stridor became evident. A fiberoptic laryngoscope revealed bilateral vocal cord edema and paralysis, which required an emergency airway. We decided to perform an awake tracheostomy under local anesthes

Airway Fire during Laser Surgery of the Vocal Cords in Children: A Case Report.

OBJECTIVES: Fire in the operating theater is a potential source of important morbidity for the patient. Laser surgery of the head and neck district presents a particularly high risk of fire due to the presence of all three elements of the 'fire triad,' necessary to cause combustive or explosive events: an oxidiser, a fuel, and a heat source. The aim of the present study is to emphasise the need of new prevention tools and greater adherence to the recommendations available in the literature. METHODS: The sudden occurrence of combustion within the airway of an infant undergoing laryngeal laser

Coccidioidomycosis of the Vocal Cords Presenting in Sepsis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Coccidioidomycosis is a predominantly pulmonary disease caused by species of Coccidioides, a fungus endemic to the American Southwest. Most cases involve exclusively pulmonary manifestations while less than one percent present with disseminated infection, usually with meningeal or skin involvement. In this case, a patient with a history of odynophagia, sore throat, productive cough, weight loss, and abnormalities on chest radiograph presented with sepsis and diabetic ketoacidosis. During admission, the patient underwent bronchoscopy with resulting tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage samples posi

Multiple-system atrophy with cerebellar predominance presenting as respiratory insufficiency and vocal cords paralysis.

Background. MSA (Multiple System Atrophy) may be associated either with Parkinsonism or with cerebellar ataxia (MSA-c subtype). It is considered a rare disease, but many patients are misdiagnosed as suffering from idiopathic Parkinson's disease. In this paper, we report a case of a patient admitted with respiratory failure and vocal cords paralysis due to MSA-c. Case Report. A 79-year-old Caucasian woman was admitted in March 2010 with dyspnea, asthenia, stridor, and respiratory failure needing noninvasive ventilation. She had orthostatic blood pressure decline, constipation, insomnia, daytime

Treatment of bilateral abductor palsy of the vocal cords by lateralisation of one cord.

Two patients with bilateral abductor vocal cord palsy were treated by lateralisation of one cord (1), with two modifications. These modifications have not been documented before. The second modification makes the operation more suitable for developing countries as an operating microscope is not necessary. The surgical procedure is described.

[The basement membrane in diseases of the vocal cords: electron microscopy and immunomorphologic findings].

The basement lamina of the epithelium of the true vocal cords of 34 inpatients suffering from chronic laryngitis, Reinke's oedema and squamous cell carcinoma have been investigated with the electron and immunofluorescence microscope. In chronic laryngitis, the lamina fibroreticularis is thickened (due to collagen type VII), corresponding to the clinical finding. In this layer mobile cells of the connective tissue can be found. In cases of Reinke's oedema it is the lamina densa which might be thickened. In this disease, also lamina densa-like material can protrude into the lamina fibroreticular

Suture lateralization of vocal cord treating paradoxical vocal cord movement: a case report.

Paradoxical vocal cord movement (PVCM) causes inspiratory stridor and extra-thoracic airway obstruction through inappropriate adduction of the vocal cords during the respiratory cycle. We report on a patient with severe PVCM necessitating tracheostomy insertion. Using the technique of endoscopic suture lateralization of a vocal cord, we succeeded in decannulation 22 years after tracheostomy. PVCM of this severity is rare and its management remains unclear. Successful treatment in this manner has not been documented previously. A brief review of current management options for this condition is
